    << <i>Steve/Don:

The PSA 8 Shantz that is on EBAY right now IMHO does not meet the 8 grading guidelines with respect to centering. Too far off top to bottom to be an 8.

    AZ >>

    Al,

Like I said before,PSA is currently more concerned with corners than centering........how much do you think the centering devalues the card?

    Steve

Like many of you, I check out the PSA 59 listings on Ebay every day.

I'm often very surprised at the centering on some PSA 8s. On some if you measure they are within specs though not very attractive, but some seem to be easily outside of an 8.

I am looking for 2 cards to complete my set, PSA 7 or better. I'll even consider 6s. I need Billy O'Dell and the Cards team card. This will complete and I can upgrade later.

    Thanks.

    Steve:
Depends on much the person wants the card. I think it is more a case of how much more the card is worth when it is centered nicely.

Shantz card went off at $1350 to Albero.

I just picked up a decent PSA 7 at a reasonable price. Considering that the SMRP for a PSA 8 is only $45, I'm wondering what a reasonable price would be for this card? I am acutely aware of the recent bids for certain 1959 cards.

A good day for me!! I just acquired a PSA 8 Don Hoak card so my 1959 Topps Baseball Basic Set is 100% complete in PSA 8's and PSA 9's. It has taken awhile but it is a fun goal to achieve. I have 3 cards left in the Master Set to complete in all 8's and 9's. They are two of the No Option and No Trade variations and the Spahn variation Born in 1931 cards. Once I get those, the Master Set will be where I want it too. It will probably take me awhile to find those 3 cards.

There are at least two "heavy hitters" that don't have the Infield Power card in an 8.Both would go $400 without batting an eye. They haven't shown up as bidders yet.Anything below $400 would be a good buy at this time. I don't know if that is reasonable or not,but that seems to be the market now.

    And Don.....Great job and congrats....again.

I will just sit tight with my cheap little 7. I realize that these prices are the market right now, but I think that this 1959 Topps bubble will burst eventually. I certainly hope not, and I can certainly financially afford to bid in the stratosphere with the others, but I detest making poor investments. Lucent was once a good buy at over $100 a share, too.

I am in the process of listing hundreds of graded 59s on ebay. Thus far I have listed a starter set of 52 PSA 7s includings stars and HOFs and a number of 8s including some very tough low pops. The remainder will list tomorrow evening. Most are at auction with opening bids of $.99 with a few in my ebay store. You can view my listings and my ebay store at the links below. Most of these cards (the ones with cert numbers beginning 063) came from a very high end raw set I broke and sent for grading. They are super nice. If you like high gloss cards with super centering take a look at my ebay auctions.

Ouch. Up for auction on Ebay.

Guess centering wasn't a priority on that particular day. Might be in specs but it sure is ugly.

    It's not mine.

One of my subs popped last week and this gem was on it. I bought this card raw at the National in Anaheim. Given the difficulty of finding nice raw in this age of grading, I am feeling pretty good about this one, now added to my registry set.

    Nice Don.

would you care to tell us what you paid for that raw? or for all of the ones you sub'd..(the 59's) I'm pretty sure I made a "9" in that card a sub or 2 ago. I got 4 of them back this time in 8.

I think I've picked up a decent "eye" on the grading on the 59 and 60's and wouldn't mind going to a show if one was ever close.

Boy nice job Don,I wish I could find a raw Hanebrink and Lumenti variation in those conditions.I have raws on both however the Hanebrink was graded as non holdered miscut and my Lumenti has a minor crease to it.I am almost near the end of the journey finally however the last few cards may take a LOOOOOONNNNNNNG time to find and becoming more of a challange than I thought it would be as with the exception of the above stated cards none of the remaining cards are real low pops but I just cant seem to find the cotton pickin cards.

How about coming to St. Louis this weekend for the St. Louis Sports Collectors show? There is a lot of vintage there, mostly raw. I am near the stage, but I don't sell cards. Anyone coming, stop by and say "hello".

St. Louis show was OK. Not great, not weak. Brett Hull cancelled and Marshall Faulk drew well. So did Ted Simmons to the public. The vintage raw was plentiful, but condition was ex ex-mt. Greg Dragos from NC flew up to hang out with me and bought a beautiful 57 Topps Basketball set for $2,500. Cards are pack fresh but all OC. Still he sells raw and should do well with the set break. He also bough a lot of 51 Bowman, 60 Topps, etc ex ex-mt raw for his inventory. Overall, I did well at the show in sales with World Series balls and Cardinals memorabilia.

Couldn't get tickets to the WS game. So we went to Ozzie Smith's restaurant on Friday night. A lot of dealers there including Andy Madec. Was a zoo when the Cards won. Got Ozzie to sign a coaster from his restaurant. Willie McGee and Whitey Herzog were also there in VIP section. Saturday night we took the train downtown and I showed Greg the sights and we gambled a bit.

After St. Louis, I drove down to Nashville TN to visit my Uncle. Toured the replica Parthenon and the city. Beautiful area, business is booming and the people are very courteous (not like NY and NJ) *laugh*

Then came home on Thursday and reloaded for NJ MAB show this past weekend. Was a whirlwind month. Glad to be back at home.

Near the end of the road with my 59 Master Set.Recieved my Thacker PSA 8 card today and now I am waiting for the results any day now on the Hanebrink no trade.Have had a rejection so far as being a miscut altough for the life of me I do not see it.Found another raw one a while back and I sent it in and grade should pop any day now.Keeping my fingers crossed.I do not plan on retiring the set as I would like to upgrade the handful the 3 or 4 5s and one 4 thats in the set.Its been a great journey.

Here is a question I hope someone on this board can answer. There are 3 lines on the population report for the 59 Topps Hanebrink. One is for the traded, the other No trade and the other is just blank with populations on all 3 can someone explain why.Could it be that when a this card was submitted that it was not indicated whether it was a no trade or traded?I am very curious about this.

    Thanks 59er

fiveniner....you are correct, especially early on, the card would be submitted without any designation and it was graded as such. So, in this pop ti can and does contain both variations.

How important is it for serious 59 collectors to have both the white back and gray back for card #s 199-286? It doesn't seem the Master Set ratings distinguish between them, although they should.

Also, I've heard on these boards that gray is less common. Any opinions? My 59s are about equally divided.

OK, you knew it was coming, so here's the promo: I have a Kipp PSA 8 gray back and a Kline PSA 8 white back on ebay, ending Dec. 7 at 6:30 pm, Pacific Coast time.

Hi to all you guys I've dealt with during the past year.

Collecting both versions grey and back were my primary goal when I started my venture however I decided after completing my master set
without both versions to give it a rest for a while although I am always open to considering making an offer for any card that I may need.
Anyone one is free to PM me if they have anything to offer between 199 and 286 graded 6 or better or real nice raw cards.I do have the variations listed on the registery that I now have.
