People try to say I am Axtell with an alternate ID. A-Rod slapped the ball, and he got on base, I thought a player is supposed to do everything it takes to get on base. So what is next, although I cannot believe I am defending a Yankee, is there to be a thread as to why A-Rod has not cemented his place in the Hall?
OK, so he did not get on base, sorry I am not brushed up on my recent Yankee history, since there really has not been much of it to note. What A-Rod did, was instinct, I was in Little League before, and I attempted the same thing, only it did not work. If all you Yankee lovers hate A-Rod so much, I am almost sure that about 20 other teams would some way, come up with the money to pay him, and they would be happy to have him in the mix. I bet the stadium in KC would be packed every night with A-Rod on the roster!
First off, I believe that Arod is one of the top 5 players in baseball.
But I completely disagree with this statement
I am almost sure that about 20 other teams would some way, come up with the money to pay him, and they would be happy to have him in the mix.
Teams had that opportunity a few years back, and I do not think Arod has really done anything to make more teams get into the bidding mix for his services.
And for the record, I would rather see Jeter at the plate in a clutch situation than I would Arod.
<< <i>I'll leave the Arod discussion at this (for all you jeter lovers):
Arod career postseason OBP? .393 Jeter career postseason OBP? .379
And please, don't give me this 'Arod doesn't get clutch hits' crap. Arod's a better player, better postseason OBP than Jeter.
Goodnight, gracie. >>
Axtell - you truly are a deadhead at times. The discussion has been about WHEN ARod gets on base not IF he has been getting on base! What good is a high OBP if it often occurs at meaningless times during games that have already clearly been won or lost?
Two weeks after my post about Arod hitting three home runs in one week that either tied the game or gave his team the lead, he grounds into one double play and this starts.
Some of you guys are unbelieveable.
And this Jeter/Arod arguement is also a bunch of $hit. Jeter better than Arod? Who cares? Ruth was better than both. So even if someone agrees Jeter is "more" clutch, it doesn't mean Arod sucks. That's like saying if Ruth is better than Jeter, then Jeter sucks. He's still a top 5 MLB player, whether he's ahead or behind Jeter.
Go back and check out the box scores from a couple weeks ago. Arod's not just homering with his team down a touchdown. Quit saying he is, it's making those who do sound stupid.
Great example tonight. Third inning, 2 men on and one out. Close game with the Yankees leading 1-0. Jeter gets a big hit to make it 3-0. Two batters later, same situation, Arod strikes out. Too often that is exactly how things go down.
"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." -- Yogi Berra
Unfortunatley I have to agree 110% that A-Rod fails in the big spot WAY to often. I just have seen it way too much. Those who watch every game know the deal
<< <i>Two weeks after my post about Arod hitting three home runs in one week that either tied the game or gave his team the lead, he grounds into one double play and this starts. >>
You guys *are* unbelievable. You obviously hold too much weight on the times he comes up short, and want to belittle the times he comes up big.

Not only that, Pay-Rod had the game winning HR. What's funny is that when he hit it, he thought it was a pop fly and could not find the ball -- he only knew it was a HR when the first base coach told him.
Hey connect, my comment was directed at the MORONIC nature of Axtell who claims that Yankee fans "come out in force" when they win a game. OBVIOUSLY that is not the case.
Secondly, A-Rod can't be the first one to think he popped out to left field in Fenway only to find out the ball cleared the monster.

Did you run out of your medications, and the gas bills on your middle age crisis, oops I mean sports car, keep you from refilling them?
Well, since in your little mind, 'rooting' consists of hopping on their bandwagon when they are winning, and ignoring them after losses, then, by your definition, no, I don't root for my team.
But since I root for them win or lose, that would be something you know nothing about, bandagoner.

Let's not forget that ARod HIMSELF made the statement at the beginning of the season that he wasnt clutch last season and needs to be more this season! Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining that he hit the HR and the Yankees won...it's just that Yankees fans want him to get a few of those hits when the Yanks are behind or the game is tied.

I couldnt agree more. Sure, the hr turned out to be the game winner, but it wasnt hit with the team down or tied. I have no problem with that. If the Tigers want to send over a couple of young pitchers in exchange then bring em on.
"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." -- Yogi Berra
There is a simple solution to the disagreement you are having.
Go through every one of Arod's home runs and see the score at the time of the Home Run. I did this one time with most of the key home run hitters(of the 80's), and found that most home runs by them occured with the game in reach. and certainly undecided.
If people are expecting Arod to hit ninth inning home runs to win or tie the game, then I hope their expectations are realistic as that just doesn't occur by an individual player very often. An easy way to find out is to locate what actually happened, rather than argue and speculate on what happened.
Also, never look at just one season or two, as that is going to be invalid due to small data. One must use all the players years as these things tend to even out over time.

True, but what matters is the final score. Whether A-Rod hit that homer in the 7th or the 9th inning, the score would have been a 5-4 Red Sox Victory without it.

But there are plenty questioning his ability to hit when it counts, and that is ridiculous.
he is hitting 115 in the first inn.
he is hitting 109 after the 7th inn
he is hitting 309 with no one on.
as of late, and in many instances when the game is on the line he has failed.

not ridiculous at all.
