On the back of Checklist # 5, in the Then and Now category. Card numbers 6 and 7 are both listed as Musial and Lee. Does anyone know if, in fact, there are two different cards involved here? Thanks 86 nova-- Craig in Ohio

I just looked at an online checklist a box seller had listed, and it does say both TN6 and TN7 are Musial/Lee. image
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
  • They are two separate cards. I believe one is Derek Lee and the other is Carlos Lee. However, they are two different cards. The Lee pictures are different.

I have a Whitey Ford flashback relic (there's a picture in this thread) that I will trade for one of Mazeroski, if anyone is interested. I should have my SP trade list up tomorrow.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

    My case just arrived!

    ISO 1978 Topps Baseball in NM-MT High Grade Raw 3, 100, 103, 302, 347, 376, 416, 466, 481, 487, 509, 534, 540, 554, 579, 580, 622, 642, 673, 724__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ISO 1978 O-Pee-Chee in NM-MT High Grade Raw12, 21, 29, 38, 49, 65, 69, 73, 74, 81, 95, 100, 104, 110, 115, 122, 132, 133, 135, 140, 142, 151, 153, 155, 160, 161, 167, 168, 172, 179, 181, 196, 200, 204, 210, 224, 231, 240

  • Here are the results from my 4 case break. A couple of observations: (1) The collation of the box could be determined from the first three packs. (2) SPs appear in a box in groups (e.g., if you get Ortiz (#1) then you will also get Piazza (#2)). (3) The location of inserts (e.g., FB, TN and NAP), chromes and CCRs were limited to certain horizontal rows in the box. (4) The big hits always occured on an even numbered horizontal row.

    Results:

    (1) Refractors: 24 different

    (2) Chrome: 64 Different and 16 doubles

    (3) NAP: 3 complete sets and several extras

    (4) TN: 4 complete sets and several extras

    (5) FB: 6 complete sets and several extras

    (6) CCR: 13 different and 1 double. Big hit is the Mantle.

    (7) Black Refractors: 2

    (8) FR: 2 Mantles

    (9) Autos: 2 Blue (Musial and common), 1 Red (common) and 1 Topps Team

    (10) Master Sets: 2 complete and a third is missing 36 SPs.

    (12) Extra Base sets: too many to count.

    (13) Extra SPs (not used in above 3 master sets): 92

Quick checklist question: is Albert Pujols card #165 or #75? If he's #165, who is #75? Thanks. Looking forward to picking up my first three boxes on Saturday...
  • Alex Gonzalez is #75. Pujols is #165. Pujols has a regular card and a variation.

Box one is opened, I think I got your box SoftParade....

    12 sp's
    3 chromes
    1 chrome refractor
    2 NAPs
    1 Then and Now
    2 Flashbacks
    1 Clubhouse Collection jersey

Nothing real fancy but no catastrophe either. My nine year old was forced by his mother to go to bed and I promised I'd wait on him for the others, so I'll somehow try to wait to open another box until after school tomorrow.

LOL, great idea Mark. Unfortunately, I'd then be opening the three new boxes on my one weekend a month visit with my son, as my wife would probably kick my a$$ if I bought three more.

Sorry Soft, hands are off. No touching, I forgot.

Is it just me or do the chromes look EXACTLY like the refractors this year? Last year there was a difference between the two. Now the only difference I see is the numbered to 557 or 1957 .....

Also, last year any chrome card was CUPPED in the pack and you knew right away what was there. This year they are very flat and blend into the rest of the cards in the pack. Am I going crazy?

You are right on both cases, the other thing I have noticed is that you don't pull as much of them. The refractors are HARD
to pull! I went though my 12 boxes and am still 16 sp's short and a few inserts. Are both the Arods short prints?

Quick report on my first case. I'm not too happy.

Pulled the stated 12 SPs per box. That was good. What was NOT good was that I only pulled 49 different. Had 17 doubles, 13 triples, and one card (Jon Lieber) I pulled four of. If I can find a number at Topps to call, I will be calling it.

Pulled five or so refractors, and the stated odds of regular chrome. No blacks.

Pulled two game used, and perhaps the one redeeming card - a /25 Frank Robinson autographed seat card.

On to the 2nd case - I'm hoping it yields my remaining SPs.

Ya did real good! If you pulled that, the rest is just an annoyance.

Ask Lothar what happened when he contacted Topps about a God awful collation from last year.

    My advice?

Make a complaint but don't get down.

Turn in your bad stuff and get random or card for card replacement.

Get some trades going here - you know "we" will have some going?

Keep your spirits up - you pulled one of the better auto cards IMO!!!

    Congratulations!

OK, I hit some targets today and they all got in new cards....the new 06 topps is out, which means heritage isn't far behind, unfortunatly
there is usually 2 weeks between shipments. I still need to keep my eye ready at walmarts, they will be the first ones to get it.

    take awhile!

    Good question Kevin

I'm sitting on the fence. I called some hobby shops and they hadn't got it in yet.

Got a call from one guy who says he has it in.

I'm leaving this up to the Cardboard Gods - if his price is fair - I'm in my pickup and down to his shop.

Fair? Around 62 - 65$ If he still has the case? I may buy the whole thing if he throws in the tax!

Otherwise, it will be retail and try to complete just the set + SPs.

But, I have and will continue to enjoy what you guys bring to the table.

In fact, who can say they haven't made a purchase on ebay since Nov 18th I believe.

Can someone explain to the unwashed what the difference is between hobby and retail with this issue?

Retail is generally quite a bit cheaper than hobby, say $400 per 8 box case vs. $550 per 8 box case. Hobby packs have a chance at hitting one of two Cut Autos in the product (That's right, 2 total cuts in the entire product.) Hobby is released a little sooner that retail. For most cards, buying retail is a fool's errand, but Heritage works the other way around. Most odds are the same in both varieties. I'm tired so that might not have made much sense.
  • Hobby has a chance at a Mantle or Williams 1/1 cut signature. Unless you're one of the lucky two who get these cards retail is much more inexpensive.

    Boo
From year to year this will change.

The Hobby is supposed to have the advantage of better odds on certain inserts like the autos. And has a special 1/1 auto set - like last year there was Nixon, Eisenhower, Salk etc.

Also, in a few years, they added a special "box topper" insert - i.e. an item that was on TOP of the packs.
Last year they messed up and deleted them. The year before, it was a "double header" set.

In more recent years, the retail - which can be picked up at Target, Wallyworld, Kmart etc. has also changed in quality.

Two years ago, they packaged the retail "sealed" mini boxes - some called them booster boxes - had 11 packs in them - and you paid for 10 - 29.99.

The great thing was that EVERY pack contained an SP or insert of some kind - a chrome, TNP etc.

I hope this hasn't made it more complicated.

The only catch to buying retail was that Topps forced you to purchase a number of packs that was divisible by a prime number. This was fine when purchasing loose packs (ie, just do the math in your head in the card aisle and you should be good when you checkout and they double-check your calculations) but it became a little hairy when you wanted to buy "Booster," "Blaster," "Blister," or "Bluster" boxes. These came in prepackaged quantities of 7 +1 Free Pack, 10 +1 Free Pack, 95 +1 Free Pack, and 191 +1 Free Pack respectively. The latter two were only available at volume-discount retail chains such as Sam's and Costco, but the former were available virtually anywhere cards were sold, such as Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Jud's World of Liquor, and Safeway. These retail packs could also be exclusively found at Topps "HTA" or "Home Team Advantage" hobby stores. Non "HTA" stores were forced to carry hobby packs of the cards alongside their retail displays.

Time for me to dredge up my return policy post from the past few years:

    Topps Return:

    1. Address: Topps, 401 York Ave., Duryea, PA, 18642-2035 - 800-489-9149; for replacement also put ATTENTION: Consumer Relations.

    2. If you want to return "card for card" exchange - limit it to 25 cards - list the cards by number in order.

    3. You can also send the cards for "random" replacement - I recommend this for commons since you will most likely get SP's as part of the random replacement - I sent them in 100 per request - no complaints and from a total of 200 (approx) replacements got back about 45-50 SP's! This will not happen anymore!

Don't worry about the condition they don't care - "insure" they can see the defects!

    4. The last time I sent cards in, they did request that in the future, I submit them with a proof of purchase or UPC code tab from the box.

    5. I recommend that you give minimum insurance as a "record" of the submission in case there is a problem.

The service last year was lightning fast and cards came to me in good shape. This is definitely worth the time!

What is up with this "Authentic Stadium Seat" crap?
Why would anyone want a piece of plastic from where some fat drunk fan's a-hole was? For the sniff value?

That said, I am enjoying this thread ... image

How the heck do you fit a stadium seat piece into a baseball card? They must slice it really think. Hmm - that's just bizzar-o to me.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
