Nick, not really. If I entered PSA 8's for the remaining cards I need I would be neck and neck with you. Anyway, that was just a friendly nudge and I look forward to helping each other out down the road to enhance our sets. Are you going to move forward with the set after completion in PSA 9 (If that ever happens) ??
My goals have always been four-fold for my 1978 set, Dan:
1.) To finish the set, 100% graded. That I have accomplished.
2.) To secure all 726 cards in PSA 9 or better. As of tonight, I am 44 away.
3.) To upgrade my PSA 9's to beautifully centered examples...cards that require no explanation (to myself). As of tonight, I have 65 PSA 9 sliders that I need to upgrade. You can catch a glimpse of my criteria for sliders in my Registry set, based on photos of some of the cards I have entered: my cards numbered 19 - 320 - 335 - 530 - 560 - 720 are six of the 65 that need to be upgraded.
4.) Finally, to casually upgrade cards to PSA 10. As a matter of fact, I just bought a PSA 10 yesterday! It was my first ever purchase of a PSA 10 - the rest of the 10's in the Saturday Night Fever set are from my submissions (plus one - #214 - traded with Brian). Doyle Alexander was always a favorite, and I bought a perfect 10 from Sims Classic Sports for less than $25.
There's no hurry for this, and I am in competition with no one. There will not be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you (or anyone else) overtake me; nor do I rollick in glee for being "#-whatever" and ahead of somebody in the Registry.
I love my cards, I collect them for personal enjoyment, and their value does not fluctuate based upon any outside endorsement.
Something tells me that you go about your card collecting using a very similar approach...

Brian, that wasn't me who won that Alexander! I bid but was beat out. I did buy a PSA 10 Jerry Remy however.
I bought the Kessinger but it turned out to be a PSA 9.
The ones spending $220 for a common team card are nuts. I know its a 1/1 but geez. Too bad I didn't have my Tigers PSA 10 listed last night. There's enough ungraded cards and unopened packs that I will wait for another card to be graded. I've also noticed that card prices drop quickly if nobody buys it the first week its listed. Over the last month or two you can buy PSA 10's for well under SMR. That has been nice. I'm sure that won't last long.
Brian, holy crap! I just noticed the PSA 9 grade on the Kessinger. How the heck does something like that happen?
I agree, $200 bucks plus for a Team card is crazy 1 of 1 or not. STill notable none-the-less. I was a bit suprised to see that there was different buyers of the Indians and Tigers team. The Astros team is still on e-bay but the centering does not look so good. Especially at 200 bucks PLUS!
The one that bought the Tigers team card bought two other PSA 10 Tigers from me. I think he only buys Detroit Tigers cards. The centering on the Reggie Jackson WS card doesn't look that centered either for being a 10. My 9 looks more centered than that one. And I know the the corners are just as good.
Gimme your psa 9s, guys. I am sure you have an extra Forster or three lying around.
As a side note, did you know that Glenn Burke was one of the first, if not the first, openly gay baseball player? I read that he died homeless, suffering from AIDS. He felt that baseball ostracized him because of his orientation. A very sad story....

Brian, I just looked at this card. Left to right centering does not command the dollars .... sharp and perfect corners be damned!
This scan taken from e-bay sucks but you can tell that the Astro team card is not worthy either of the "astro"nomical price tag. The Tigers card? Now that is CENTERING. But the scan is so bad who knows what the surface is like .....
Hello all. My first posting. Working on 78's in 9 like most of you (no 10's). ebay Id blondmoment and registry name GI's Set All Nines. I need about 125 left to complete it. Also working on all sets from 68 to 79 in PSA 9. I have a long road ahead of me.
Collecting '52-'54 in PSA 7, '55 to '67 in PSA 8, '68 to '79 in PSA 9. See me on the set registry as GI's XXXX Set. Thx.
blond, its ABOUT TIME you showed up here! Welcome. I have noticed the great progress you have made in this 78 set. Welcome! And good luck in all of those monster sets you are collecting!
You all rock! This has been much more fun than scrolling on ebay.
Brian I. has hooked me up with a psa 9 Davalillo and the team card. Now all that is left are the fearsome fivesome. Monday is not that hard, but what a great photo! Forster, ugh. Guys, this card I just got in the mail and is one of the BEST e-bay cards I have won in a while. Top to bottom centering is a smidge off but MAN! The corners are so sharp that I would have to wear gloves handling it raw! Also, just a clean clean card. Not a hint of print marks with excellent image.
Urggg...and I have won about ten of them on eBay trying to find a copy that makes me happy and I still haven't got one. It figures that when I stop bidding one comes up that is the BOMB! Congratulations Dan!
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10. ______________________________________ The best presents in life are the ones you give yourself!
Most cards I get from e-bay are "ok". This baby is high end! I have hit a wall and it looks like upgrades of my pi$$ poor 9's are now front and center on the agenda.
don't know if you missed my post above but I have a # 255 Don Gullett PSA 9 available along with a Joe Torre PSA 9 that might be of some interest. Scans are a small scroll above this post!

Any Yankee fan from the '70s will know that Don Gullett was never a true Yankee. Talk about bust. My mom always called him a china doll. Always breaking.
This # 400 Ryan is up on e-bay right now. Be wary as I am told the blueish hue in the cards back ground is in fact on the card. Not from a bad scan. There should ba a PD qualifier with this baby!
I would think so, Ken - Dan might have a better handle on what 9's are going for lately, but I would think only the Reggie Jax (maybe the Yankee team card too?) would cost you more than $15 in a 9.
You have to watch out for those 78 Yankee cards. It was a championship season and the cards always sell well. Last week a Dick Tidrow PSA 9 ended up at $28 link Willie Randolph usually does well too and being the current Mets manager does not hurt . The Reggie Jackson # 200 card will run you about $50 give or take and the World Series card with Reggie will do well too. Thurman Munson is highly sought after in any year by collectors.
Also, Bucky Dent, Graig Nettles, Chris Chambliss, Ron Guidry, etc will do well. Just be patient and depending on the day you should be able to do OK!
<< <i>What about Roy White? I see you have his card as your avatar. What's the reasoning behind that selection? >>
Roy was the first PSA 10 that I submitted myself. Stone193 (Mike) sent me the raw card for NOTHING. Great guy he is! Anyway, I no longer have it as I sold it early on in this quest to get a bunch of PSA 9's. The pic in my avatar is that particular card.
Dan.... Yeah, I thought that one was mine too. In the last few days now "Mr. Nearmint" has outbid me on cards that I thought were mine. He has come out of nowhere.
I know ..... this has happened before with the 78's. They come and then they go in a flash. Lets see how mr. near mint fairs spending the big bucks.(as far as late 70's cards go) Anyway, the Roberts (like the Remy) is a card I need to complete my set. Oh well, next time ...
I was loving that lot, perfect deal for what Ken wants, until I read this crapola in the auction description:
WE ASK THAT YOU NOT BOMBARD US WITH SHIPPING STATUS E-MAILS!!! (i.e. When did you ship, I haven't received yet?) IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME TO ANSWER THESE AND DELAYS THE ACTUAL SHIPPING. REST ASSURED IF YOU PAID, WE SHIPPED. DUE TO THE VOLUME OF SHIPPING THAT WE DO, WE SHIP EVERY FRIDAY.
It delays the actual shipping for you to engage in some customer service? Are you that busy? You can only ship once a week, too? I feel like sending this guy a bunch of emails, but I wouldn't want him to slow down his sloth-like shipping any further.
That auction also gives you an idea of which '78 Yankees are tough and/or expensive - by what is NOT offered in the auction.
There is no Mickey Rivers or Fred Stanley - two cards I have been searching for for three years. There's no Figueroa in the lot either - that card is strangely tough. Dan is correct about Tidrow, as well.
Finding a PSA 9 Gossage centered is a real challenge. The auction example has the typical lousy t/b centering. (I do covet his Bucky Dent, however. If anyone wins that lot, and wants to sell Bucky, I'm in!)
#89 Ken Clay causes bidding wars, and I don't get that at all.

Most cards I get from e-bay are "ok". This baby is high end! I have hit a wall and it looks like upgrades of my pi$$ poor 9's are now front and center on the agenda.

Any Yankee fan from the '70s will know that Don Gullett was never a true Yankee. Talk about bust. My mom always called him a china doll. Always breaking.
There should ba a PD qualifier with this baby!

Good luck, Ken!
Nick
Ken
After Brian read my posting, he offered me a PSA 9 Fred Stanley for my set. How cool is this board, anyway?
A loud shout-out to you, Brian! Thank you kindly.
