Dan> The 78s I posted were part of a 450+ card submission that went out right after PSA announced the 70s special. I'm guessing there were 70 or so 1978s and the rest were mostly 73s, 74s, and 75s.
But. . .I did pull a few 1/1 PSA10s which will hit eBay Sunday nite
assuming that Frank's cryptic message to you contained some hidden message, I took all of the capital letters and rearranged them, and treated them as an anagram. Here then are his wishes for you:
BUTTER TRY DRINKING CLOROX
Now, maybe he simply made a spelling mistake, and he meant BETTER TRY DRINKING CLOROX. If so, he's just jealous of your submission. Or, he could be indicating to you that DIRT RETURNING... TRY LOCKBOX. I dunno...do you keep your 78's under lock and key? And, yes...in this case, I would agree with Frank. You sure don't want any dirt on those submissions if you want Gem Mint 10's.
Then again, maybe the message was simply TIORBNNCIDTREXGYUOLRTRK, and I have far, far too much time on my hands.
At any rate, watch out for papercuts, and good luck! I'll be holding my breath right along with you, and the rest of this board.
Well I am done. It is 175 cards. All 1978 Topps. My last sub was off the charts with only 1 PSA 8. This time will be different I think as I am including many lower pop cards that are borderline along with other cards that I need for my set. Still, I am optimistic! Many many sweet cards!
I can only wish I had help keeping everything straight. I will give you four words that allow me to do what I do: No Wife - No Kids. If I had a family, there would be no way I could do what I do. Between work and my commute, I leave the house at 6 a.m. and get home at about 7 p.m. That allows me about three hours per day to do other stuff, of which, about an hour goes to cards. Right now I am also getting a large submission ready. Currently, I have 1,016 cards ready to head out the door to PSA. The only problem is that I haven't went through the piles of 1978's, 1979's, 1980's, or 1981's yet. Who knows how many cards I will have when I'm finished? Here's another thing that is staggering to me when I thought about it. I have been wanting to add scans to my sets for quite some time. Tonight I had the first box of my 1980 set out, so I went to work and scanned the first 20 cards of my set. Although I dinked around a little while I was doing it, it took me an hour to get all the scans looking good and loaded in my set. I have 4,528 cards currently on the registry. If I wanted to load all my scans on the registry and it took the same amount of time as it did tonight, it would take me over 226 hours to get it done. At an hour per night, I will be done in about 7 1/2 months! So much for grading cards or searching eBay until the middle of May 2006!
Good luck on your submission! Please keep me posted on your results.
Frank

Mike, That Wilbur Howard will garnish a great return I bet. I'm not in the market for the 10's until I am done in 9's but I bet you do great with all of the 1 of 1's.
Edited to say that I did not realize you had BIN's on these cards. I would think the buyer of the Wilbur Howard card got a great deal. That card is a TOUGH low pop in PSA 9 as it is ......
CONGRATULATIONS to Sinibobs Cards for reaching 100% in his 1978 Topps registry set. He had been at 92% PLUS with straight nines and has finished the set with some PSA 8's. Great job and I have already started filling in some tough low pops with PSA 8's!
Hey, kinda off the subject but still regarding the 78's.
Spike, whats up with the 78 psa 10 stargell and seaver?, i thought you sold all your 10's, and now your bidding, finding out what the high bid is, retracting your bid, and then rebidding? Come on, now, one time is an accident, twice is not. If anyone wants to check they are both running on ebay right now.
<< <i>You are definitely on the subject, Guy. We've been wondering what spike's been up to for a few weeks now.
At least now you have an idea of his maximum bid for those cards.

I noticed this as well. I am still waiting for all of those 10's to show up in someones registry set. I was a bit suprised to see him attacking the 10's again!
Yikes! You gotta love those starting prices. So much for trusting the market to set the price.

All it takes it one sucker to bid and the card that would sell for $30 to $35 without starting price will sell for $50 and a card that would sell for $55 to $70 will fetch $80. I can't blame you for taking advantage of it and wish you the best of luck! It's something I need to do more often as well on my auctions.

John - You should start a 76 thread. I'm sure you would get some people to post. I just think the 78 set has much more going for it with the cleaner design, nice rookie cards, and, of course, Reggie's big year. During that year, it just seemed that every one of my friends, baseball lovers or not, were buying cards due to the hype of the prior World Series. Other than two packs in 77, 78 was the first year I bought cards and I did so largely because of my friends were trying to get Reggie.

The 78's IMO are just the most appealing of all of the 70's sets. Now of course this is highly debatable. These were the first cards that I collected in mass as a kid, along with the reasons given by Frank, COMBINED with the fact that 1978 Topps is the last year that unopened product is still attainable in box and case form at prices that are not crazy crazy if you buy right!
Dan - I can't say that I know they will sell for sure as there was one card that closed at $37 and other that closed at $44.99 with no bids in the last week. However, the odds are that most/all of them will and I sure hope they do. Not only is Matt a nice guy, but that will make me feel even better about the 283 I have listed in my set!

As you all know 76 was the first year I collected cards in packs as a kid. This is probably the reason for me to keep coming back to this set ? I love the 78's and collected them like they were going out of style! I was on the Reggie band Wagon for years ! I used to try an spit between my teeth like he did! I actually tried to bat and throw lefty like he did! I tried the mammoth power swing like he did! I was addicted to Reggie! I also remember going to Fenway with my Dad in 78 , well guess what game I saw? You got it the Reggie vs Billy Martin fight in the dugout game! Memories that I will never forget! I was the only kid in the stands chanting Reggie Reggie ! Oh did I forget the Reggie bars ! I was die hard Yankees (probably because they were winning) Baseball cards were the only thing that mattered to me in 78! I love the 78's and they will always be on my list of favorite sets to collect! Now can someone get me a clean as a whistle Robinson RB !!!!!!!!!! Come on Frank I know you have one!!!!!!!
<< <i>John - You should start a 76 thread. I'm sure you would get some people to post. >>
Frank I did on the SGC boards and well it's like collecting and talking to yourself? Tony and Scott are great guys but other than them its a post or 2 a month! I think thats why I keep coming back to these types of threads? Collecting is much more fun when there is 5 or 6 guys passionate about theior cards!
<< <i>Anybody know this "joigoe?" He's been buying all the 10's in sight. >>
Maybe the new set on the registry named "1978 Topps only 10's" ??? Interestingly, the reason I started this thread was in reference to e-bay buyer "honesty2n4u" who was buying nothing but 1978 Topps PSA 10's a month or two back. Maybe this is the same buyer????
All right, the silencing is deafening on this thread. No posts in over a day? I just have to rattle something off here before I leave the office to move this thread back up top!
Don't forget to contact me with anything you're not going to keep Dan. The '78 set is my new focus and my goal is to finish it this coming year. Good luck. We're all keeping our fingers crossed for you.
Bill wpkoughan@yahoo.com Collecting 1970-1979 PSA 9 & 10 Baseball Cards
Thanks Bill! The bummer is that the only gradeable material I have left after this sub are cards that have awesome representation in my registry set already and would not be wise to submit for re-sale. I guess its time for more pristine unopened!
If anybody out there is collecting the 1978 Topps set raw I have gobs of raw. Not the greatest cards centering wise but they ALL are PACK FRESH! Pm Me!
Softy - Really nice results! It's a great set... but now it's time to turn your attention to that 84' Donruss set that's been nagging at you. RayBShotz
Congrats Dan on yet another fine submission! That Ryan is a toughie. Out of 1096 graded, only 20 9s (1.8%!) and no 10s! I have yet to find a decent centered one. When that 10 comes, it is sure to go through the roof. I would imagine it could pull easily 2k. The Ryans I have are off centered and ugly. A 9 would probably pull a pretty penny too.
I hope my next submission can be as good as yours!
Now i know you've got a great eye and had some amazing luck with that rack case (especially that stennett - toughest of all the 78's bar none (well maybe the forster) to have that many nice cards, so maybe you can shed some light.
On your brett especially, but also the yaz, dawson, yount and ryan. Do you think they graded it harsher than all the others you thought were 9's?, do you think there was a bias or that they look at the big cards harder, or were you just hoping?
I know i shouldn't, but i can't help it when i submit, i always throw some in there and "hope" for the best, but it never happens. Just wondering

Guy, Brett IS an 8 along with Yaz ...... Ryan I thought was an 8, Dawson and Yount in MY EYES were solid 9's. A little of everything in regards to your question EXCEPT any OVERGRADED cards.

By the way, the lone PSA 7 was the #400 Nolan Ryan I thought might be an 8.

Nice submission!! BTW ...I sent you a PM about some raw 78s. Either way it would be nice to get a response.

Hey, number 96 from 78 is up on the bay right now!
