Mike...along with those three names you mentioned, I might add that my feedback is exemplary. Like, 100% positive.

But that didn't help me get more than the $4 a card I mentioned above.

I have 3 psa 8 1978 Topps Rose cards - # 20. I can't stand looking at them. If someone can trade me 2 psa 9 dodgers or one Lopes or Cey, Davallio, or Burke (I need more than half of the Dodgers), I would love to send you the 3 card bouquet of Roses!

You can try selling directly to registry members.
If you have anything that would fit into the #6
set on the registry, I'd certainly pay more than
    $4 a card. Thanks, Bill.

    I would too!

Anyway, there are several new sets in the 78 registry, 1 of which is a ALL PSA 10 set at 46% complete! I have conversed with the owner who recently busted a entire 78 WAX CASE image and I am hoping he comes here to add to this thread.

  • Hi Dan... you got me in.

I don't have much to add to this thread right now but to offer some of my dups. If anyone is interested in buying some cards then let me know. I have approx. 90 PSA 10's available, quite a few 9's and a few stacks of ungraded cards that would probably grade as 9's. Send me mail if anyone is interested or let me know what set is yours on the registry and I'll see if I can fill anything.

    Thanks,

    Guys,

I am just 47 (fourty seven!!!) PSA 9's away from FINISHING this set in PSA 9 or better condition. It just hit me how big of a task this has been and continues to be!
I have not lost the love for these 1978 Topps baseball cards one bit along the way. I know the chances of me obtaining ALL of the final 47 in PSA 9 will be slim in the short term. Some tough cards in there! Either way, I feel like I am on the final lap!

His somewhat vague words to me was that he got full price from one of his regular customers, when I asked him if the cards were still available. I'm a little bummed because after ditching the 10s I think I would have liked re-completing it.

Well, assuming that "full price" was his BIN I am a bit skeptical. Wouldn't the buyer just hit the BIN? SOunds shady ..... anyway, we will see if that set finally disappears from the registry and surfaces again under another owner.

I would guess the sale was very near the BIN and that it occured. All-Star Cards is a very good seller and has a large mail order catalog monthly. Ironically I get his catalog due to purchasing his original graded '78 "leftovers" from a case break. I then submitted a bunch and had nearly 500 until I chickened out and sold off all the commons.

He didn't confirm or deny that it was sold on Mastro's recently when asked.

Earlier, we all talked a bit about centering on 78's. We all had varying opinions, but this? Check out eBay 8753065355. I have seen lousy centering on a 9, but this takes the cake!

(Nothing personal, Mike...I know you didn't grade it. And all of my transactions with you have been stellar.)

I need this card very badly, but I can tell you, I wouldn't pay $3 for it.

    Whew.

    Nick,

I noticed the card the day it went up. My PSA 8 is centered SO much better. There is NO WAY that card would have made my "on the bubble" pile during pre-submission. Makes you wonder what the hell a grader is looking at. Anyway, no offense to the seller either but that card is garbage.

    Well. . .what to say. . .

I knew the Valentine was somewhere between an 8 and a 9 when I submitted it. I figured it was a high-end 8 or a somewhat marginal 9. In all honesty, that card was on a 200+ card order which had a lot of 73s and 74s along with some 78s and 79s. I pretty much got hammered on the 73s and 74s - like he forgot what 9s should look like until he got to the 78s. I was more worried about the beating I took on the 73s and 74s than any gifts I may have gotten on 78s.

That said, I do try to give a really good scan and will always provide a super-high-res scan if asked. Everyone has different things they look for - centering, corners, image, etc. So it's really up to the bidder to determine what's "acceptable".

Figured you guys would rather have the above than "Hey, I didn't grade it" image

I really have hit the ol wall collecting this set. Including upgrades from PSA 8's I need just 46 cards and not much has been in sight the last 4 weeks. Perhaps I will make another unopened buy in due time to start the tough upgrading in the grade journey and hope to get lucky with the remaining cards I need. One thing is for sure, I won't ever truly retire from this set!

There is just no $ in grading 78's. I have tens of thousands but cant get the grading fee back on a 9 so I wont send them in. There's also no money in singles raw so wont do that either. Your best bet is buying unopened and gambling.

gaspipe, if I sent you a small list would you check for PSA 9 quality raw which I would gladly pay for?

Even at a buck a card, it would take me hours to do it. So its just not worth it. You can send a list, I'll look if Im going thru some, but otherwise I just dont have time.

Bob...how much would you sell me those "not worth the time" 10,000 78's for? I'm a very willing buyer. I'm assuming, of course, that they are fresh from vending, wax, cello, etc.

In fact, how about you keep the HOFers and superstars, and just sell me the remainder? How much for that lot?

And I'll bet that Dan would go halves on this with me, too...wouldn't he???

    Let us know...

You have no idea who you are talking to. We are 78 Topps nutjobs. The speal you just delivered about 78's not being worth your time DOES NOT APPLY in this thread. If you could find my short list in PSA 9 quality I would BLOW away 1.00 per card. Actually, you could name the price.

Nick, I would CERTAINLY go in with you ..... image

    73, 80, 82, 97, 103, 110, 153, 185, 196, 254, 279, 280, 313, 319, 325, 330, 351, 386, 395, 400, 402, 444, 481, 484, 489, 501, 503, 512, 520, 533, 538, 578, 631, 642, 673, 681, 689, 695, 725.

There it is, my short list. If you have any of these in true PSA 9 quality I would make it more than worth your while ...... ANd Nick makes a great point. I would love to help him take those worthless 10,000 plus cards off of your hands. Granted that they are in pack fresh condition

Dan is correct, Bob. If you aren't going to take us up on our offers, then take your 1978 bashing out of this thread and start up a new one of your own.

Notice, however, Dan (and all of you 1978 friends, Registrants and collectors): these wise guys who continually bash the "worthless" late 70's models; yet, when they're given a bona fide offer for their self-proclaimed "garbage," they run and hide.

I believe we've just witnessed yet another example of one of life's golden rules: talk is cheap.

    On we go...undaunted.

I wasnt bashing anyone or anything so get the chip off your shoulder, what I said was, and its a fact, that as a seller there is NO money in 1978 PSA 9's. Why would ANY seller spend $5 per card in hopes you get the 9 to sell it for under $5 or just above that. Its not worth the risk. Theres nothing wrong with collecting anything or any year you wish, as it is my right to decide what is a sound business investment. In my opinion , you are not seeing the big submiters sending in 78's because its not worth it to them. As for searching for commons, again its not like say its 1958's where the commons are worth $5-$10 per card, then its worth looking for cards. 1978's are what $0.25 each? Its not a bash, just the truth. You dont feel that way because you love the set. I submit many up to a thousand cards a month so I think I have a little knowledge as to what sells and what doesnt. I had a few minor 78 stars like Morgan and Perez in 9 and just got $10 for them, I could sell the card raw for about the same thing , so why grade it? You want 10,000 cards? I'll pull out the first 10000. You take what comes , there could be offcenters, dead on cards stars , specials, teams whatever, I'll sell them for $5000. LMK If you want 20000 I'll sell them for $9000. If you want more than that we'll talk. I dont spend all day looking at the message boards or this thread in particular so I also resent your run and hide statement. It was less than 12 hrs since I last posted on it. Softparade if SOM buys a lot, I'll look for those you asked for . If not I'll put you in contact with 2 sellers who buy raw group lots from me that do sell raw singles. I know I sent them a few thousand 78's recently. In fact , one of them submitted some and did get 9's and 10's.

gas, for the most part you are correct. More than half of the commons in this set would probably sell for less than 5 bucks per PSA 9. But your idea that it is not worth grading any of them is not true. I understand that you are a seller and submit alot and know your market. I, however, collect nothing but 78 topps at the moment and can certainly tell you that you are missing the boat on some nice cards that you probably have. PSA 9 Team cards do well, any NY Yankee card do well given it was a World Championship year for them. Reds cards, Red Sox do well. A PSA 9 Dick Tidrow just sold for $28. The obvious lower pop cards to well and if you have any PSA 9 worthy # 400 Nolan Ryan cards I suggest that you submit them. That card will do $300 PLUS every time out since it is a tough card to find centered. Also, if the cards you have are truly minty type raw I bet there are alot of PSA 10's in there. I can tell you of one set registry guy who is building this set in nothing BUT PSA 10's and there are other guys too who would pay nice premium for 10's. A PSA 10 Mike Schmidt is over $200 at the moment, a PSA 10 Indians team card just sold for $220, so there is money to be had with this set. If you knew the set very well which is tough to do when you are submitting from all different time periods. I don't believe you were bashing the set at all gas, I just think you don't have this one pegged. It would be worth your time to go through the cards. Hell, I would love to help you do that if you don't have the time. I wouldn't want anything in return except for the cards I listed in my list! Look in the registry, the 78 set is being collected ALOT more than either 1977 or 1979 Topps with 16 sets over 50% completed. There are alot of buyers for this set.

Hey gas, last spring I purchased a 1978 78 3 box rack case. To make a long story short the case was PRISTINE. Now I know I got lucky but I pulled ALOT of great cards from the case and the money I got in sales PAID for the case and ate into about 30% of the grading cost AND left me with over 125 PSA 9's for my registry set. I chronicled the whole adventure in another message board, no joke......

I am not trying to over glorify this set, just trying to get the point accross that there are ALOT of cards worth grading in this set besides the obvious HOF'ers and stars. I would love to be hired by you to go through the oodles that you have and pull out the winners as I am sure Nick Marnell would too. That ba$stard is proving TOUGH to catch in this set imageimage

It is just impossible to find centered along with several other cards in this set. I have a very clean PSA 8 with the centering being the only issue.

    Soft,
Your probrably right, but when I prepare a submission I go thru every card. The 78's are not collated so I would be looking at the more populated cards as well as the tough ones. No doubt I probrably have some of the tough ones nice, but the tough ones are tough for a reason. I remember looking for a team card , I think it was the Giants and found 20 or so, they were all cut short on top. I spent an hour and found nothing, so its tough for me to do. I dont do this for a living , if I did maybe I would search them. I'm also so burnt out looking at cards and listing them. I have over 100 PSA 9's from 1974 thru 1976 ready to list but I just dread doing it. I stared at them for 10 min last night and went , "nah, not today". I'll pull out a few vending boxes this weekend and look thru them. Maybe...............lol

Sting, You are right, centering looks good on that Watson from FAR AWAY. One of my rules is that I don't buy raw cards on e-bay unless I really know about the seller. Not that they are expensive, it is just the way I buy. Thanks for looking and posting that info!

Gas, I know what you mean by being burned out man. I get burnt once and stay away from cards for a week or more. I then come back refreshed!
