One More to trade. I just got a1978 psa 9 Batting Leaders Parker/Carew #201 in a trade. A nice 9. I would trade for any of the dodgers I need (monday, Burke, Cey, Lopes, and Forster) or another cool 9 Dodger or star'ish player that you don't need. I know this is not a low pop card but someone might need it.

    PM me

That is so true, Dan. And a shout-out to you as well, for keeping this thread going!

This thread has a lot of very cool, intelligent and interesting people who post to it. Not any flame wars, no sophomoric, juvenile rants (ie, that stupid Larry Block thread), just a bunch of truly dedicated collectors of the classiest set of the late 70's!

See the print dot on the bottom left border???? The ONLY blemish to a truly MINT Cardinals Team. Super focused image, brilliant white borders with zero print fuzz with razor sharp corners and a 50/50 centered back. I can handle the print spot .... for now image One more down!

Awesome! Good for Mike! I will be buying 10's in mass starting later this summer. Also I will be submitting more by then too.

  • That's going to be quite some horse race on the registry. There are 5-6 sets all in that range. It will be interesting to see who comes ahead at the end of the year.

If you guys are racing toward the top spot, don't forget the awards are given out earlier this year (May) than they used to.

jerry, no, I am definatley not doing that. I just want a TOP NOTCH 1978 set. I will be VERY picky with the 10's on centering and corners. I will never stop working on it. I may take some time off for sure, but will never stop!

Brian, what has made this SO MUCH FUN is the fact that there are many active 78 collectors.I hope there are more to come.

  • Hi Guys.

I've been out of the loop since early January so I wanted to make up for lost time. Brian hooked me up with enough cards to get me to the 9.0 mark. 9.0 is the second mark I wanted to hit with the set, the first being completing the set in all PSA. The "final" phase for me will be upgrading a few of the remaining 8s to 9s. I can guarantee that I will never attempt to take the top spot in this set. There are some hardcore collectors here and I don't want to get caught in the mix for the top spot.

Keep up the great posts on this thread. Thanks to Dan for getting it started.

Thanks again for the cards Brian.

    Stay safe.

  • Mike - I will be there at the airport from Wednesday through Sunday. If you have any reason to come to town, give me a call at 503-338-9269. I would be happy to buy you a drink (or any other beverage you prefer). By the way, are you still working on sets other than 1978? I have few 80's and 81's that I you need. If so, I would sell them for less than grading fees including shipping. Let me know. Frank

  • Frank-

Still working on the 80 and 81s although I haven't been too aggressive with them. Please send an e-mail. Heck. One thing good about deploying is I don't have anything to really spend money on except cards. I commute with a military armored vehicle, eat Army chow, and live in a plywood shack. All I have to do is duck once in awhile and fire back to keep the bad guys away. I should be able to close the 80, 81, and most of the 56 set before the tour ends next April.

This weekend I'll start searching 78's. What are the top 20 toughest?
  • The top ten would be below. The list would grow to more than 40 for a pop with less than 10. But I think everyone would agree to the list below for starters.

    97 Stan Bahnsen
    103 Tom Murphy
    165 Rennie Stennett
    330 Bob Watson
347 Terry Forster (hardest to come by)
    538 Johnnie Lemaster
    563 Dave Radar
    642 Denny Doyle
    724 Royals Team
    725 Kurt Bevacqua

Dan - Thanks for noticing! As of last night, the set is 100% complete in PSA 9's or better. It's nice not having an 8 to be found. Now it just a matter of upgrading about 20 or so 9's within the grade. At that point I will be done as my original goal was to get each and every card in PSA 9 or higher and have each of those cards be an example I was happy with. By the way, I will e-mail you on those two cards you expressed an interest in if you are still interested. Frank

I have probably thrown this out there before, but if anyone has any 78 topps Yankees in PSA 9 or 10 that they are looking to sell please let me know, thanks.

  • Can anyone give me some advise on BVG grading vs PSA. If a card is graded BVG 9 would it surely cross to a PSA 9?

Also, help me fill my 1978 set. I need 96 more. All in grade 9. See me on the registry. Thanks all, you keep it fun.
