Nick, I'm happy! Hell, I'm ALWAYS happy! Funny thing is that i had no idea my membership was close to expiring. Today, on the date I receive my grades, I am not allowed into the pop report. No big deal, I may not renew my membership.
you can always back-door the pop report by checking Frank's or Guy's or any other Registry set...at least you can find out how many 9's or 10's there are, anyway...
I'll also have a fantastic Jim Rice that is perfectly centered with deep, rich color up by Tuesday or Wednesday night. I'm listing some extra nice cards over the next couple of weeks.
NOTE: The 1978 20-card lot I'll have up by Tuesday or Wednesday is very ordinary, however. A couple of really nice cards--some...ehhh (making a so-so motion with my hand here). Dan, that lot is NOT for you. It's more geared toward the bulk set-builder type of cert # collector, etc.
Does anyone have a 1978 Topps Yankees Team PSA 9 or PSA 10? What does that card usually sell for? gregmo32@aol.com
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy! Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
Phil, bring on the cards! In all likely hood this 1978 Topps set will be the only big issue I ever collect graded. I don't think I will ever stop working on it. There are at least a couple dozen cads in my set that will be booted as I find better examples.

RayB, I am a ways away from 100%! I won't rest though until I am happy with every card in the set at PSA 9. If THAT ever happens then I will be looking for out of this world PSA 10's
<< <i>There are at least a couple dozen cads in my set that will be booted as I find better examples. >>
You got THAT right! What'll likely surprise you is how you are "OK" with a card now and then ANOTHER card of a different player of group of cards will obsolete THAT card, etc. The 1977 Topps set is 660 cards deep. To date I have slotted well over 1300 cards to arrive at the set I have. I think the number is closer to 1400 actually, but I stopped counting when I retired it. I have upgraded 20+ cards since retiring it and continue constantly. The really nice cards I sell are typically cards that were a second or third upgrade at some point. Dan, I know you'll appreciate this, I have upgraded more than 20 PSA 10's with PSA 9's...go figure. It's cool when you can grab a stack of cards from your set and go "man, these are nice." They're fun to look at. I was going through some 78's today as I was preparing a listing and spent 5 minutes admiring a Rogelio Moret. I'll never part with that "worthless" card. I couldn't replace it--not without an awful lot of luck and effort anyway. Yes, falling in love with pristine cards is the fruit of the vine that is our hobby.

In the spirit of the above thought I feel compelled to post a scan of the absolute guiding light in my set. Its not the PSA 9 that out strips the PSA 10, BUT, man the moment I pulled this card from a wax pack George just slapped me in the face. That is how out of control this card is. Color, focus, corners, centering, edges, back, bla bla bla.
ENJOY ! ! ! My scanner does not do this card justice, believe me!
How do you keep your enthusiasm up for building a big set? With some recent purchases, I will be about 50% complete, give or take a few. Pretty good considering I started about 4 months ago. But now is the tough part. I can troll ebay and pick up 1 card at a time, but I almost feel like letting things go for a month or two so I can get my enthusiasm up. I'm also considering a purchase of unopened material. It seems like a great way to fill in those commons and have some fun with waiting for grades. It just seems like I'm so far away from the finish line that it is tough to keep up the momentum. I do have some other sets going, so that helps.
But I agree with the nostalgia part. I can see a George Zeber card and it brings me back to 1978. It is a set I love and remember, so it will get done. I love this thread. I may not post very often, but I read it all the time.
Tom, I had to ask Frank and Mike and Matt on a regular basis once I got over 80% complete "What now?". I was too fussy to buy off of eBay and the product was too expensive to justify the unique numbers I might pull. I just started upgrading the 80% I had and enjoyed comparing the colors, focus, centering, etc. It kept me interested in the CARDS rather than completion. The BEST thing I did was to upgrade all the way-- along the way. When I hit 90% complete, I was actually pleased with 3/4 of my cards. Upgrading is the only way to keep your sanity when adding two cards a month becomes a challenge. At one point, and the guys I mentioned can attest, I didn't add a SINGLE card for almost three months. I was actively looking, but nothing fit in or other fanatics were bidding unreasonable amounts when a card came up. I was patient and just kept charting/upgrading.
The other key is to have another set that you can dabble in while you coast on your main set. My most worked on set is probably 1981 Donruss after my 77's & 78's. The 81 Donruss was cheap enough to afford product and challenging enough to be interesting. That is a great way to take a break--without getting completely out of the water.
Hey 78ers, I am begging and pleading you to work your mojo again for me. Last time I sent in a bunch of 78s and asked all of you to wish me luck, I did really well. Being superstitious, I have to ask again with my current order just sent off (about 60 cards). Please pray for me that I can do just half as good as Dan "Softparade," the 78 guru!
For the first time I booted a PSA 10 from my set in favor of a better looking PSA 9. It even brought my set rating down to 6.66 much to my dismay. # 41 Burt Hooton is the culprit!
I hope this is not an inappropriate post - but I'm looking for a NM/MT ungraded 1978 Topps set.
I like the 1978 set - one of my favorite sets and the first one I started collecting as a kid. I'm sure in amassing your PSA 9 sets, some of you may have ungraded PSA 8-quality sets for sale. If so, please let me know, I'd be interested - kenny98z11@yahoo.com
Basically I'd like to own a all-PSA8-quality set that is completely ungraded (to save space!). I don't want to spend the time to upgrade the set (already have too many sets I need to upgrade, only so much time), so I don't want the set to have scatterings of EX or lower cards.
yep, thats the one. I sure have seen worse but my 9 has 50/50 all the way around with zero print problems. The George Hendrick I have up is a beautiful 10, the second of two great cards I pulled from a rack case.
Ya know, the centering on Hooton is not so bad. I know the top to bottom LOOKS OC but there IS alot of card from the bottom print to the bottom edge too. Its one of those cards that is at maximum size. The PSA 9 that is in my set now has the same centering on the bottom and top. The card is just that smidge shorter but certainly well within size requirements.
IMO, perfect centering on 1978's requires that the three colored lines make for three exactly even borders along the two sides and the top. Whether the bottom space between the name and the bottom of the card matches the top border is not important to me.
Maybe I'm nuts, but I practice what I preach. Check out my George Brett on the Registry...the one I have up there now. I hate that centering! It has too much white space along the top for my taste. I've finally purchased an upgrade that fits my criteria (above). However...I paid less than $50 for my upgrade last week, and I then sold my original (the one I hate)...and it went for over $80!!
in my set (Saturday Night Fever), card #160 of Jim Palmer is a good example of a 9 with perfect centering, at least IMO. As far as "too much space between the name and the bottom, but perfectly even colored borders" check #325 Bruce Sutter. That card is perfectly fine, by me. Many would say it is OC t/b.
Then there is my #335 Bucky Dent. I cannot upgrade that card soon enough. The top and bottom spaces are exactly even (top border to edge/name to edge), but too much white shows at the top of the card.
Card #180 Dave Concepcion is a PSA 10. What do you guys think about that centering?
<< <i>Ya know, the centering on Hooton is not so bad. I know the top to bottom LOOKS OC but there IS alot of card from the bottom print to the bottom edge too. i agree.. the hooton looks OK to me.. there seems to be equal space under his name and above the top red border..
Nick, I'm right with ya really. While I do believe the Hooton is WELL centered, it is not centered like my PSA 9. Thus the boot and e-bay auction. After dinner tonight I am going to check out the cards you just listed!
paandrews, you see exactly what I do. Of course scans suck but the card does present well, and is within PSA supposed 10 standards .....just not as good as my nine
There is something about the 78s T/B centering that is hard to get a good read on what is acceptable. There is too much or not enough space on the botton of the card or the top border is too wide? It does not bother me too much either way, more concerned on L/R centering.
Edit: Just listed my only PSA 10 #498 Joe Sambito on Ebay.
My store has done AWFUL. I have sold seven cards in 1 and a half months. My auctions are doing MUCH better. My prices are a bit high but everything does have free shipping. Anyway, I am not disappointed, just thought i would give it a try. After Christmas my store is DONE FOR THE YEAR!!!! .... and WELL into the next.

Hey SINIBOB!!! If you are out here, nice job nailing down that PSA 9 # 400 Ryan! I screwed up on this one ..... again. Last Sunday night it was listed with a buy it now of $300. I took the approach that the last one that I saw went for $240 or so .... so I hit the minimum bid hoping to get the card for under $300 bucks at hammer time. Well, obviously me being a cheap ba$tard is to your benefit!! And the sellers
If anyone is interested, I have an extra 1978 #400 Nolan Ryan PSA 9 available for $400 + $5 shipping and insurance. Feel free to e-mail me at fesmith68@yahoo.com or PM me. Frank
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10. ______________________________________ The best presents in life are the ones you give yourself!
This is a Ryan that I picked up as part of a larger purchase. The card measures 58/42 left to right. The image is better than I have seen on five of the six other Ryan PSA 9's I have handled. Although it looks drab in my scan, this example actually has very nice color for this card. The corners are towards the lower end of the PSA 9 range, although I have certainly seen worse. The only other thing of note is a slight "crunch" to the right hard boarder that probably came from the card being inserted from a rack pack.
If any of you guys want it, I will give the CU members a $50 discount and sell it for $350. If I don't hear anything by morning, I will e-mail the 2nd high bidder on eBay.
Frank

Unless its a bad scan, that STAIN under the second L in "phillies" would turn me off. I have seen this kind of stain on many 78's, including a PSA 10 Andre Dawson I have.
FAIR price for a common with medium to high pop? I would say between 5 and 8 bucks. Of course some common commons can be had cheaper on e-bay, but if I was doing a deal off of e-bay with a dealer or another collector that is what I would expect to pay. Plus shipping of course.
Depends on who you're buying from. I mean if you're buying from Frank Smith, Phil Apostle, or SoftParade, you know up front that the cards are going to be very nice. Remember, it's always worth a little extra to make sure the mailman doesn't deliver a box o' turds (tm).

How could that centering garner a grade of PSA 10???

Maybe I'm nuts, but I practice what I preach. Check out my George Brett on the Registry...the one I have up there now. I hate that centering! It has too much white space along the top for my taste. I've finally purchased an upgrade that fits my criteria (above). However...I paid less than $50 for my upgrade last week, and I then sold my original (the one I hate)...and it went for over $80!!
What the heck do I know...?
in my set (Saturday Night Fever), card #160 of Jim Palmer is a good example of a 9 with perfect centering, at least IMO.
Its one of those cards that is at maximum size. The PSA 9 that is in my set now has the same centering on the bottom and top. The card is just that smidge shorter but certainly well within size requirements. >>
i agree.. the hooton looks OK to me.. there seems to be equal space under his name and above the top red border..
paandrews, you see exactly what I do. Of course scans suck but the card does present well, and is within PSA supposed 10 standards .....just not as good as my nine

Link To Ryan Picture
Frank
