What a ton of coin. Would be fun to open but too expensive for me. I wonder if someone from the boards will buy it?
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,276 ✭✭✭✭✭
Too rich for my blood too. I paid $2700 for a case from Steve Hart a couple of months ago. That was $37.50 per pack and MUCH more reasonable.

  • Hello all, Do any of the case and pack busters here have any duplicates to help out a starting set builder? I need about 14 cards to get my set finished and out to PSA for grading. I have Paypal and cash. Thanks for any help.

I have noticed that D & A cardworld pricing seems to be on the high end. They charge $7.00 for shipping for a rack pack. Does that seem a little much?

I think Spikemax decided to get out of the rat race for the top spot and still do the set in 9's. Who knows though since that huge lot of 10's did not sell.

All righty all! I just sent off to PSA today 38 pristine and blazing 78s from a wax box I recently picked up from BBE. To help maximize my 10 return, I need all of you 78 heads to please rub your best good luck charm, post a response or whatever you do for luck. Just wondering why anybody that is new to the 78's would submit to PSA and not SGC? SGC is giving a 2000 dollar cash prize to the top set and PSA is giving an 8 x 10 piece of paper? Nobody is gonna catch Frank so it seems senseless to even start a set in PSA when you can get cash money from SGC? You figure 728 x 5 =3640 -2000 so you have a nice graded set(especially the people that have nice raw) for 1640 + product and shipping? If they do the cash prizes again next year you were just paid to open product have the time of your life going through raw and submitting? I am not promoting any grading company it just seems like a no brainer to me especially if your keeping the cards for awhile. If your submitting for 10's to sell on ebay then thats a different story but if your just collecting a graded 78 set for pure enjoyment it seems my intrests would be at SGC.

    That makes too much sense.

    1. Not trying to get the #1, just a completed set would be nice.

    2. Do not like the look of cards, at least 78s in SGC holders, IMO.

    3. Do not know anything about SGC message boards, but I am sure there are
more collectors of 78s in PSA than in SGC, therefore I have more people to
buy or trade from. I do not submitt any raw, just buy slabbed so if I want to
complete a graded set I think my best chance will be in PSA slabs.

    << <i>That makes too much sense >>

I take that as an insult to everyone who collects 78s in PSA graded form.

You can do what you want with your collecting goals and money. If you need collecting friends thats fine and sure there is alot more collecters of 78 Topps in PSA holders but you didn't read my post. I said a collector that is NEW and HAS RAW like the above collector that is trying to finish his raw set so he can send it to PSA to put on the registry not send his set to SGC where there is a 2000 dollar prize for a complete set? I know why someone that is 30 or 40% complete stays the course but someone that doesn't have one card should really take a look at SGC???? Sorry if i offended anyone of the 78 collectors and I would never try and tell anyone how and what to collect so enjoy your 84's and 78's and have fun !

Point taken, but if I had raw I still would want to do it in PSA, IMO. No offense taken!

    Kirk,

The biggest reason I am concentrating on the 78's ALMOST exclusivley right now is so that I don't spread my hobby money around into too many places. This enables me to buy unopened once in a while (nothing in this hobby beats opening pristine untouched packs!), buying and trading already slabbed, and submitting to PSA. I can't imagine having multiple big sets going at once. Properly organizing and recording them would be a full time job!

I am collecting the Topps Civil War News set slowly, had thoughts about a 73 Topps set but quickly came to my senses.

Whether someone thinks one grading service is better than the other is not the intent of this thread. What DOES mean something is no matter what grading company you are using, you are collecting 78's!!! image If anyone is doing this set in SGC lets SEE THE SCANS!

Please don't hyjack this thread guys with the SGC/PSA stuff. Another thread could always be started about the pitfalls and merits of the grading companies.

The links on my end are not working!

SC, I was not pointing the finger at you or anybody individually. Its just that the grading card company issue holds some volitile, passionate beliefs with some. The next thing you know it blows up ....... I just wanted to get across the point that this is a 1978 Topps thread! Not a 1978 Topps PSA or SGC thread.

  • softparade,

not sure why the links arent working, sorry.

Anyway, I'd love to share stories and pics of 78's with the gang here. You know, some threads here are titled with a set and "official PSA thread". That tends to keep other collectors away, whether they are SGC fans or are building the set raw. I like the 78 thread because it appeals to anyone building a 78 set. The info that we all possess can be a great help to each other as far as low pops, pricing etc.

Let's keep the good flow of info coming.

Sorry if I seemed a little snippy on the PSA/SGC issue. This should just be about the 78s, agreed. Late70s, are those 10s that you have listed doubles? If so, I am jealous that you actually have PSA 10 doubles, just kidding. How long have you been working on this set out of curiousity?

  • Stingray - The 10's I have listed on eBay are doubles of those in my set. To answer your other question, I started building my graded 1978 set before PSA even had the 1978 set on the registry. At that time, the 1975 set was the last large baseball set on the registry. I went back and checked my submission forms and I made my first large submissions of 1978's in the summer of 2001. Frank

All I can say about the following is WOWZER! I submitted 38 cards I pulled brand spanking fresh from a wax box from BBE. I hit the motherload! Out of the 38, 11 came back a 10! That is roughly 26% of my submission! With 15 9s, my 9+ rate was 68% Funny thing is on my lown stinker, the PSA 5 Fisk, that card barely made the cut. I obviously missed a surface wrinkle.

A few gems in the lot. The biggest is a PSA 10 Lou Whitaker rookie. It is a 1 of 3 pop on a popular Tiger player! The 10 on the Jim Hunter was also a big score. The Bobby Bonds is a 1 of 1 Gem 10. I should also tip my hat to PSA for a lightening fast two day turn around time on this one. It really does seem to help to limit your submissions to the same year and company if you want quick results. Here they are with some notes:

Dan, that is an awesome submission. I remember when you posted that one. Puts mine to shame! I notice how both of our submissions have the gratuitious 5.

On the Chalk, I see that is a really low pop even in 9 condition. Only 7 9s, no 10s. I am lucky!

I must thank you again Dan for reminding me how great this set is. It is the year I started collecting. I have had just an absolute blast opening 78 product. It sure brings back a lot of memories. The good thing about vintage (well, some may not call 78 vintage but I do) is that even the commons are collectible. You get 36 packs and over 500 cards. It is even fun building sets. I will take this over the new stuff any day. For $500.00 in new stuff, I can buy one box, open 12 packs with 4 cards each, and hope I hit the case card. The rest is usually junk that my dog won't even touch.

Well, I anxiously await to get my cards back. Thanks to all who "prayed" for me on this submission (see my earlier post). It really worked!

I also need to give props to SOM-- Nick on the board. I put a note up a week or so ago looking for raw 78 singles. Despite my insistence that I pay him, or at least trade him something for about 80 cards he sent me, Nick refused (perhaps I should have tried the universal currency of alcohol?? image In any event, a very nice gesture by one of the good people here on the board. Thanks Nick!

Nice job mefer! Can you guys tell me the deal with the Robinson RB ? I need/want one perfectly centered with no print spots. Is it usually diamond cut or off centered? Everyone I see is.

Not really actively collecting the whole thing graded. I would like to get all of the keys in PSA 9. I will be selling all of the PSA 10s I pulled.

    Guys,

I am hunkered down for the good part of this weekend finalizing my submision for postmark by Monday. Almost 500 cards deemed PSA 9 worthy .... which AT LEAST half will be booted. It is a grueling process, the pop report, cards I need, cards I have already but these are nicer, etc....... I don't know how anybody could actively collect more than one monster issue at a time and stay sane! image
