There is oil in plastic ! Its just a matter of time before the price for slabs goes up and then submission rates will follow along with the Post Office rates and PSA will no longer be grading 78 commons ! So grab them up now imageimageimage

I have about 20 psa 9's including some stars like stargell bench carlton and a few yankees. If someone wants 'em i'll dig them out. Most of them I sent in myself to make the 25 card limits on specials. I was surprised that I didn't get any 10's.That was before they started to appear like magic though.

Just wondering with the 78 collectors, how many PSA 10s do you have in your sets?

I used to have alot, but there are guys who just love to take them. Not that I liked seeing them go. 99% were all submitted myself ... one day when I am close to 100% in PSA 9 I will stop letting them go!

If I start to look at my cards this closely, please take them away from me.

I showed my graded cards to my dad today. He asked "so what is the difference between a 6 and an 8?" and I think I mumbled something incoherent.

Just updating my set registry and I noticed that the Pete Rose #20 card has a weight of 7.

Any reason? If my memory is correct, that card was double printed. I thought Topps double printed 66 cards and the Rose card was one.

It seems like this card is always on ebay

The weight given is because, well, its Pete Rose. I am sure that double, triple, quadruple, whatever printed cards bears zero impact on the grade weight in the set. By the way, you are right, I don't remember the last time a Rose # 20 wasn't on e-bay!

Wow - that card, in PSA 9, used to be in the SMR for $115 as recently as last year. Now, I see it is listed at $50, and if it actually brings $50, I would be amazed. There must be a zillion of these floating around in PSA 9 slabs.

way too many roses in 9 floating around, and the dam has burst recently on psa 10's for ole petey, i'm seeing at least of those every week now along with all the 9's.
i think i've seen at least 2 auctions in the last month for lots of pete in psa8, 5 or 6 of them in the lot, so there are tons of them out there

I think the double print actually helps on his card in this set, as you have to go through twice as many of them to find nice 9 candidates, alot of them have issues keeping them from 9's (lots of tilts on the roses)

Does anyone think that there are more PSA 10s than usual? The last special probably helped that along.

I've finally gone through my 1978 cards and I have 46 PSA 9 duplicates that I am looking to sell or trade.

If anyone is interested, please let me know. It would be a good way to make a dent in a 1978 Topps PSA set.

OK, I have my set in the registry now at number 15. I have quite a ways to go to reach 14.

All grade 9s except for some 8, 9, and 10s that were graded from my original raw set, plus a Murray 9OC from my original set.

    Now the real fun begins.

    I still have 36 duplicate 9s available.

    Shamelss, but relavent, spam:

I have a PSA 9 NQ #540 Steve Carlton. It was from a submission of mine from a modern special a few months ago. I have atttached a scan (I hope). First $15 (delivered) gets it. The last two on the bay closed at $12.50 (one with $3.50 S/H another with $2.50 S/H), so i think $15 is fair market value right now.

For reference, my Ebay ID is rugbymarine. I have also bought/sold/traded with a handful of board members.

Respond here or PM me if youre interested.

    Regards,

    Ian

spikey, what happened today?, i missed you, hehe i guess your too busy fightin over that molitor with me, i thought you'd miss it ;-)
softy, joigoe is the new honesty4nu, the next in a long line of Gem Mint 10 wannabe's 8-)
its really nice to start out with the goal of all 10's when your just starting out, but then when you do that math, hmm 726 x $50, man that's over $36,000 big ones and thats not counting the difference for the stars or postage, whew!,
whooda thunk late 70's could be so expensive

  • Options
what i think is more amazing than not is that we've got 3 sets in 1978 that are complete (or just a few shy of complete) in a grade of over psa 9, and one almost to 9 thats almost complete also.
Just running the numbers on a nine set for the 78's with an average of $15 a card (average of stars, commons, postage, etc) thats almost $11k, WOW!

  • Options
softparade, spike, Frank (the king) and others,
whats your favorite card in the 78's?
the lenny randle is a classic, the felix millan is a nice action shot, and check out jose cardenal's fro, he must have taken style tips from oscar gamble and it seems like in the set almost all the yanks got action poses for some reason, not the standard spring training warming up with the bat poses like the rest

the 2 worst are the paxton and minton (both fake drawings, not real pictures)

My favorite card will be the last one I get to complete the set. image

    Hi,

I have a question for the 1978 Baseball collectors: How common is it to see print smudges on a PSA 9? In particular, I'm looking a George Brett in PSA 9 without the print spots I have seen on other copies. Also I noticed there is a relative disparity in the Pop numbers on the 1978 Brett relative to the 1977 and 1979. Is this because 1978's are tougher in general or is it that the George Brett is more difficult?

    Thanks,

    Mike.
  • Options
    MeferMefer Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭
I think the Brett is just plain difficult. My "best copy" is off center. I personally have yet to see a nice centered one. Besides, it is an ugly picture of him, all head. image
