It's about time the 1978's got its own Board listing!

Congrats, Frank, for the other 100%-er, albeit, with not nearly as high a GPA as yours.

I hate seeing big smudges on 8s. Let alone 9s. PSA chose not to show how tough that card is when they decided smudged cards could still get high grades. There are tons of Molitors out there without the smudge and I think they made a horrible choice.

Here is my one on mine:

    image

I think I'm going to have to crack and resubmit. image

soft- You have a lot of restraint to not have started wrecking stuff when the centered Murrays showed up with those splotches.

    Soren,

Oh I was pissed about the Murray's. Especially since the first one I pulled from the case was the same card as the above in centering and tiny print dots MINUS the bird crap on the card. That one graded a PSA 9. Here it is, as you can see the cards are identical except for the splotch. As were most cards in the case.

Why did PSA give some of those cards a PD qualifier and others not? TKD were did you find 195 PSA 9 for sale in one grouping? Also wondering those doing the 78 set, are you just going for PSA 9 and up or PSA 8 and up?

P.S. Does anyone have a favorite card from this set, either based on the player or the photograph on the card. Looking on Ebay I noticed a Len Randle card that has a pretty cool action shot on it, like that one a lot.

Here is one of my favorite cards in the set. Gotta love the cheesy 70's uni's in game action! Also, another card for Thurman Munson to appear on.

I was able to make a deal in person with Rob, who posted his lot earlier on this thread.

I'm planning to stick to PSA 9 or 10. The only exception will be some PSA 8s that came from a submission this month. The source of these cards are my original raw set obtained in 1978, so they have sentimental value.

Here are the results of that submission. I think the McGlothen is 1/1

Nice, a couple of 10s. What happened on the Travers (5?). I will have to save some pennies to obtain any 10s. I am just not sure if I want to try and do 9s and up or 8s and up.

I'll have to see what happened on Travers. The cards are at my post office now, I just need to find time to pick them up. I must have missed a wrinkle. You now how you look at the pop reports and wonder "why did someone submit a 5"? Now I'll know.

I'll also take a look at the Murray centering and see if it is worth submitting again. It would be nice to have a Murray 9 that I've owned since '78.

    Kirk,

I am doing the set in STRAIGHT 9's. To me this is the most economical way to do the set. The only 10's I have are ones that I have submitted myself and even then I get nice offers for them and end up shipping them off. Any 8's I submit go into my set if I need the card but only temporary. PM me if you want to talk about the low pops, tough cards in the set and so on! Also, unopened 78's are still obtainable at a semi decent price. It really is the last year you can buy unopened without taking a huge hit in the wallet. To me doing this set with alot of self submitted raw has been the most fun and rewarding aspect of the set.

Stingray, I may be a bit off but I believe that PSA first started out giving the Molitor/Trammel the "PD" qualifier and then dropped it later on when they started considering the smudge normal for the card. I think that grades are deducted depending on how severe the smudge is but without the qualifier. This is just my take on the matter, maybe someone else can chime in?

    Hello all, sorry to interrupt.

Wanted to point you to my post on Buy/Sell/Trade board. I've got a mostly MINT 1978 complete set for sale. Honestly, I have no idea what it will bring or if it's better to sell as a whole or break up. So I decided to throw them out there for offers, opinions.

I have submitted 2 groups (25 cards each) of stars and fairly random commons to PSA to illustrate overall quality (results are posted in the message). Have gotten a couple PSA 10s and many 9s. Set also came to me with 18 PSA cards, all PSA 8 or better except Ryan, which is PSA 7, and the Molitor which is PSA 9 O/C (although just slightly O/C).

Taking offers for the whole thing or individual cards. Any comments, please reply on the other board, as I don't mean to corrupt this great thread with spam.

    Continue on...

    Thanks.

Here is the Murray, plus the couple of 10s from my submission. The Murray is definitely tilted, so the 9 OC is the correct grade.

Now I've got to load all those cards into the registry. Tom

A question for those a lot deeper in the set. I noticed a few 10s for auction on Ebay and wondered what typical price of a 10 common should go for, not withstanding some type of bidding war for it. I would like to get a couple here and there to start adding to my newly started set, when I get some extra cash. Just wondering what I should keep an eye out for price wise. Still trying to decide if I want to attempt this set in straight 9 or 8s and 9s.

    Just won this:

    Kirk,

Do a completed auction search on the bay for the PSA 10's. Any common ten with a pop of just a few or lower usually get scooped up above 30 bucks. This is very general though ..... watch them for a while and you will see!

I would suggest doing the set in PSA 9 over 8. Many 9s are in the ~$6 price range which is just about the grading fee on the cards. If you plan to submit your own cards you may want to mix the 9s and 8s since you may get a mix back from PSA anyway.

Probably the best suggestion is to do it for fun. I don't think there is any money to be made right now in selling a PSA set from the late 70's. The nice side of that is as more cards are graded, hopefully the number of low pop cards will diminish.

I have had many tens, all self submitted. Most are no longer in my set because of some nice offers by some nice people. I have nice 9's to replace them all. nice is a nice word image

If anybody collects late 70's Topps with the hope for future financial gain then I suggest not collecting them at all. Whether it is in straight 10's or straight 4's. With that said, if money is no object then by all means spend away. My 1978 set will never leave my warm blooded hands!

Kirk, if there are a few players you liked from the time period and would like to have a great looking 10 I say go for it. Just be patient and make sure you buy them at YOUR price! and the card looks like a real nice 10, not just a NICE 9 image

Thanks for the advice. This set it just for fun, not profit. I was just thinking it would be nice to have a couple of tens in the set. Does anyone have an extra #528 Picciolo (SP?) in PSA 9. Saw a PSA 8 on Ebay, and liked the look of the card, looking to try and just by game action shots for now to start the set.

Just wondering what is your favorite card out of the 78 set, if you have one. Scans would be nice.

I remember those Zest cards being very scarce when they first came out.

I know there are also '78 Topps Burger King Sets for the Yankees, Tigers, and Astros. I have the Yankees and Tigers but not the Astros.

Is it just me or are some of the start bid prices on PSA 9 commons a little high?

Kirk, do you mean the 9.99 starting bids? Yeah, for a true common that has a mid to high pop that is a high starting bid.

Here is an interesting tidbit on the pop report. There have been 106 Jim Clancy cards submitted and only 91 Jim Rice. Go figure.

I have a stack of 1978 topps in psa 8 lying around. The lot has Yount, and Torre and the rest are all commons.

All are sharp 8s that were submitted to get 9s.

There are 25 cards, all are psa 8 nq

If someone wants them, $80 delivered. Just PM me.

Paypal is accepted, as well as other payments. Or, I would trade for some psa 9 70s dodgers.
