I pulled a PERFECTLY centerted Brett with a huge print stain on his head!

Guy, my favorite card this month is still Doug Ault, ready to bat with Thurman Munson behind the plate. Thurman might even be letting loose some excess spit in this pic image

My favorite has to be the Lenny Randle...great action shot. The world series cards also have some good action shots.

I was just flipping through some 1978's and see what you were talking about with the Minton "painting"

  • The #200 Reggie card is a classic and favorite of mine also. I'm working on an SGC set in SGC 88 (trying to keep the cost in check) and here's my Reggie.

  • Arny - as a lifelong Yankee fan, I distinctly remember Reggie hitting all those home runs in the W.S. against the Dodgers. That big home run wind mill swing is fresh in my mind and that 78 card shows Mr. October in all his postseason glory. A truly classic pose.

Makes you think of all the other cards out there with a typical player pose that was distinct to the individual...Brooks laid out stopping a base hit, Marichal's crazy legs all over delivery.....

My favorite card of the 1978 set? No question: card #93. And as long as he remains manager of the Braves, I feel as young as I did in 1978!

  • Stingray - is that Sundberg slightly tilted or is that just the scan?

That Sundberg is tilted a bit but is definatley a PSA 9 IMO. Nice card

Guy - I have to go with the Reggie as my favorite card of the set. It's a classic shot. Combine that with the fact that he just came off of his amazing post season and you have everything you need for a special card. In addition, although I was never really was a Reggie fan, that card started me buying baseball cards. A friend of mine who was a huge Reggie fan talked me into buying cards to see who could get Reggie first. He won the race and immediately stopped buying cards. I have been buying these damn things ever since. Frank
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10.

I do not own that one, but am getting one soon. I have noticed that on a lot of 78s they do look tilted, especially on the bottom right border, I think it might be an optical illusion though.

    Stingray
  • If it is tilted, that's a mighty sad looking "9"
  • Brett's really tough print quality wise, and i still think the tilt is there on a majority of 78's for some reason. I even see it on some tens, and its definitely a tilt, if you measure it there's a definite pitch to it.

Has anyone had any luck with vending?, it seems that if you get a crappy box, you really get a crappy box, but on the rare occasion you get a nice box, its a good run all the way through, anybody else see that?

I've also had the best luck with rak packs for some reason, way better than wax or cello (they wrap the cello's TOO tight sometimes and ding the corners)
  • MeferMefer Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭
I recently bought a vending box of 78s from BBE. I pulled a smudgless Molitor that I thought had a shot at a 10 (it came back a 9). I also pulled a nice Sparky Anderson from the box that pulled a 9 as well. About half of my box had corner dings; fortunately the Molly was not included in that portion. Vending is hit or miss but good bang for the buck.
  • StingrayStingray Posts: 8,843 ✭✭✭
What should a rack pack go for, if there are no stars showing?

    Stingray
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
A rack pack with no stars showing should cost about $30 to $35. I bought a three box rack case from the Baseball Card Exchange and I believe the cost per pack was $39 and change. That case of rack was the most pristine cards I have yet to bust!

Kirk, if they are going for under $30 a rack on e-bay I would pounce on them. I would be suprised if most without stars don't reach $30. I have not bought any single packs in a while, I have been putting my money into unopened boxes and the one case I bought.

I did go check some BIN and they were $59/piece. So I must have been thinking of something else. Question though, does anyone think $7.00 shipping for a rack is a little exsesive? A paticular seller is charging this much for shipping their rack packs.

You guys are really costing me a ton of money with all of your 78 talk. I just took the plunge and ordered a 78 wax box from BBE. Steve says this is from a new case he just purchased. My addiction did not stop there. I also bought the 78 Donruss Series II KISS box (hope to get cards for my PSA set) and an 85 Topps football wax box. Should be a lot of fun! Thanks again for driving my addiction. image

    Geez Mefer,

You better slow down there. Don't get caught up in the moment of things and regret it later. Do you have any doubles of the KISS stuff in PSA 9 or better?

    Stingray
  • MeferMefer Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭
Stingray, I have one 9 double. I believe it is Paul Stanley. Shall I double check for you?

Softparade Dan, did you just buy two more wax boxes from Steve from the current case or are these older boxes? I read your past results and you did quite well. I have my fingers crossed for a really nice Eddie Murray rookie. I told Steve to send me the box with the pristine Murray in it image. Any more busts in the works? I like reading those. If there is enough interest, I may post my results.

    Hello Gentlemen,

After a lot of soul searching and the knowledge I'll never catch Frank and Guy or for that matter even finish the set, I've decided to break it up. I have 172 PSA 10's which 27 are 1 of 1's and about 20 which are 1 of 2's. I also have a number short print 9's. I have not set a price on any card and I'm willing to listen to any fair offer for the set the 10's or any other individual card. Being #3 in the Registry and looking up to the 2 big boys who are always getting stronger is a bit frustrating. Whatever cards I do not sell privately will be placed in my Ebay Store. Thanks for reading this long winded scrip and good luck to all.

If at all interested please email me at waw206@aol.com

    Thanks again,

Good luck on your sales. If I were in your shoes, I'd sell the tens and try to re-complete in nines. You would get a nice chunk of money back out and still have one of the absolute finest sets in all of the '70s registered sets.

    Hi Stingray,

I just listed the entire lot of 174 PSA 10 cards into 1 auction on Ebay. This should be interesting to watch over the next 5 days.

    Thanks for asking,
    Bill
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
Bill, not to be a detractor, but don't you think you would fair much better by listing the 10's in single fashion or small lots? I am not sure how many who have the money to buy 174 PSA 10's let alone get in a bidding war for them.

    Good luck!

  • I agree with Dan.

You already offered this lot in July and it didn't sell. If you really want to sell the cards you'd do better by breaking up the lot.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but are there any 78s at this time that are hard to find in PSA 9?

    Stingray
  • Definitely, the three curses on my set are Stennett (muskycaptain gave close to $300 for it), forster (frank got the last one i think, $150+), and jackson todd (frank again, dang you Frank )
there are some that either haven't been submitted enough or just don't come up much, like bevacqua or torborg, brett is kinda tough in a good 9, mccovery regular is kinda scarce, ryan is almost always o/c and then some that used to be tough but don't seem to be anymore lilke apodaca, chalk, spier

Frank, I have two Chalk's going in. Assuming they grade like I think they will I will be in contact with you.

So, Spikemax's 174 10's went off without the reserve being met. No suprise there if you ask me. So much more money at hand if that huge lot would be broke down into singles and small lots. I wonder what happens from here?

Nice lot of PSA 9s for sale by DSL, too rich for my budget, but thought I would pass it along.

    Hey all you 78ers:

I am putting a second raw 78 set together and need about 120 cards. I don't need, nor do I want to pay for, mint cards. I am interested in NM to NM-MT cards and not even that interested in centering. Shoot, even a handful of the cards can have wax staining. I can purchase these or trade you some of my duplicates.

Send me a PM if you can help out and I will send you my list.

Dave & Adams Card World have 1978 Topps Baseball 3 box rack CASES for $3900 ! That is $1,200 higher than I paid for my case two months ago. Anyway, they say that on "10-17-05 we bought a incredible deal"

    LINK !!!

They are actually selling single boxes from these cases at a cheaper rate. $1,200 per box.

Pretty steep huh? $54.00 per pack in the case and $50 per back in the single boxes.

I'd be careful, there. I had a bad experience purchasing vending boxes from D & A a while back...and, they were not exactly willing to make good on the deal. I know they are active in buying vintage material as of late, but where they get some of it from is unknown.
