    Hey Brian,

You are sure WELL VERSED in the following $9,600 list price for this baby

    image

I say we all pester Steve for his best price and go in on it image Some of us tried that once before and it all fell apart image
I have never seen so much great stuff on hand with Steve. He has 84 Donruss wax boxes too.

I would pass on the vending.... the wax is more tempting. Steve's increasing his prices a bit more now than what I paid for my wax case 6 months ago. With today's prices on Ebay I wouldn't touch the wax case either. You would have to pull a Molitor or Murray to help pay for it.
  • Softie - Very tempting for a 78' guy with his heart in the right place, like you. Can't say whether this is really a deal worth chasing but it sure is tough finding all those Minties in the same place all at one time.
Good to see this thread has life and 70's collectors are energized about this.
    Best to you guys.

Brian, the $2,800 I paid for my rack case last spring is sure looking like a steal now too. Especially considering the amount of quality cards I pulled from it. That is a story for another day though ......

Ray B. ---- thanks for the encouraging words! When was the last time Steve had '84 Donruss wax? Has been awhile by my estimation. Anyway, he has ALOT of tempting 70's and early 80's unopened all of the sudden.

I broke a rack case and opened 1 box. Pulled the Watson in 9 from it. I still have 2 more boxes at $900 each if anyone is interested. I also went thru massive amounts of 78 vending I had and they just werent as nice as the rack cards.

Hey gas, I may be interested in a box. PM me ....

I knew it would be tough in the end but boy has it been REALLY tough. I can't locate a PSA 8 or better Indians Team or Johnnie LeMaster anywhere. I keep looking at the bunch of raw I have of each card but the BEST I could hope for would be a couple of PSA 7's. I don't want to think how tough it will be to upgrade the 26 PSA 8's in my set too.... image

Hi everyone, just got my smr today and wanted to give a shout out to all the 78's guys quoted in the article. I didn't get the sesame street inference either, Kevin never mentioned it when emailing with me. I kinda hate that once again our beloved 78's got dissed to the back of the book when the clearly inferior 77's got top billing (front of the mag) oh well ;-)

Just in case anyone was wondering, i had some personal things come up that kinda forced me to make some tough baseball card decisions and had to let my set go in graded form. I've still 2 or 3 great looking raw sets (one seperated into 2 roop albums so i can look at the fronts and backs) so i'm not totally out of them, just taking a standing 8 count and going back to my corner.

Good luck to everyone in their registry efforts - especially Frank, (my 78's mentor), Spikey, Dan, and Brian (its gets tough when you set the bar so high, just look what Franks done with his set keep at it, every card will have a 10 eventually, if you could pull a stennett a forster IS out there for you).

Also, i had to search 4 or 5 pages deep for this thread, come on we can all do better than that!

    Guy,

sorry to see you get out. These things happen. You are right, this thread is dead ..... even I am ready to move on after 2 plus years of 100% dedication to this great set. I will always upgrade, but I am past the point where 1978 Topps is at the top of my current collecting goals. Maybe at some point somebody else will take this thread and go on with it image

    Great,
I'm busting a rack box right after all the big guns are getting out of the set. At the very least will you guys run up the bidding on my auctions when the cards go up?

    Lee
  • So the thread dies right when I make the decision to have my 78's graded. Either way, grading has motivated me to pull the hundreds of thousands of cards I collected from the 70's and 80's out of the closet. I gravitated to the 78 set first primarily because it was one of the sets in the 70's that was complete and in mint condition. The 76's and 77's are close behind but there's something about those 78's.

Anyhow, I just sent my first submission this week and think I have a real shot at 10's on the Morris, Seaver, Brett, Murray, and about two dozen commons. Maybe I'll just show up here and post to myself.

cincy, this thread has not had new blood to keep it alive in a while. YOU be that person! If someone is showing a pulse around here I will certainly be around.

My set is 100 % complete now. I have 19 PSA 8's that will need upgrades to PSA 9 or 10. After I enter the cards I just obtained my GPA will be about 9.03 or 9.04. From there I will always upgrade at the right prices.

Good luck on that sub cincy! If you pull 10's on either the Brett or the Murray I will be extremely envious. image

I admit, I'm about halfway done with my '78 set and I've taken a break. I'm sure I will get back to it, but I realize it will always be there. I went through the same ebb and flow with my '55 Red Man set. That's the great thing about this hobby. It doesn't complain when you don't give it any attention!

    Hello All--

I love the 78s too (my all time favorite set) and have not posted here in awhile. I commend everyone who has completed this beautiful set in graded form. I would love to have an all graded set someday but the size is daunting. I am about finished on my 71 graded set (752 cards) and I don't know if I could ever again tackle such a large set. My props go out to those who can manage and collect, let alone complete, more than one monster set.

    Long live the 78s!

I just submitted 60 pristine 78's, hope to get them back by the end of the month. I've got more on the way before this week is out. I will have submitted close to 200 just during this $5.00 special.

    Bri,

That was fun to read comments by a bunch of us involved in this set. It got stuck in the back behind the article on 1977 Topps but that has to do with PSA trying to drum up interest in the 77's. The 77's are a pretty dead registry set. Anyway, thanks! It was fun.

Here are some 78's I have available if anyone is thinking about starting this set.

    Hey 78'ers,

My grades just popped on some 78s - the other half of the set I busted has a Forster that could 9 and a Watson that should. Keep your fingers crossed for me, as the grades could come out any day now. If any of you need any of these, make me an offer. I know that the Norris and Meoli are low pops, along with a few others. I am mostly selling but still need psa 9s of Monday, Burke, Cey and Forster for my Dodger team set and would potentially trade for those (except Forster who no one will part with).

    Just PM me. Happy collecting!

As an addition, these were the nicest 78s I have ever seen. I think I should have gotten more 10s but that is how it goes, I guess

Speaking of the 78 Cey PSA 9:

    image

What's a fair price for the card? I have seen other low pop 78s going for crazy money on ebay. I got an insultingly low unsolicited offer from a 78 collector who will not have a shot at this card (unless I list it on ebay and he beats out everyone else). There is nothing that annoys me more than low ball offers trying to steal a low pop card assuming that I don't know enough to look at the pop report. I recently helped a board member with a low pop 78 at a very low price because it was one of the last 2 cards he needs for his set. I am happy to help people, I just don't like people trying to take advantage of me.

    Barkus,

that is a nice looking Cey. It is not exactly a low pop by raw numbers (pop of 14) but with the collectability of Ron Cey coupled with the "all star" designation on the card which other guys will collect it would have to be considered a low pop. I was fortunate to pull THREE of 14 9's in population from a rack case last year. I would expect that a off e-bay price of between 35 and 45 bucks would be "fair".

Here are two raw Ceys in which both are very nice cards with super corners and color/gloss. The only real downfall is the less then STELLAR centering. One of these is going to BKritz (Dodger collector)

Nice raw cards, but I don't think that either would grade PSA 9. The notch at the top of the top card and close but slighty less than 60/40 centering will likely knock that one into an 8 and I don't think the bottom card is quite 6040 either I think it's close but not quite there. With the print marks on the top left of that card I would bet it's an 8 as well.

Barkus, my thoughts exactly. I pulled five of these from a rack case last year. The first three I sent out and they all graded 9's. These were the two that I chose not to send in. Still nice cards but probably 8's. The bottome card is the nicer of the two and the one that would 9 on a good day. By the way, that rack case I broke last year was one of the most pristine late 70's product I ever busted.

I noticed that the 78 3 Box Rack case that Dave and Adams had for $3,100 finally sold (or at least is no longer listed on their site). $3,100 seemed to high to me.

I got mine for $2,800 from Steve Hart last spring. Even it was listed at over 3 grand. The price of unopened will only get worse. Steve Hart has cash fresh wax boxes for $575 on his site.

I have to tell ya, between what I sold from subs and what went into my set from that case, I am in the BLACK. Which is almost unheard off .... what a case it was. Everything was centered believe it or not. I still have a TON of raw that would easily PSA 9 .... no kidding image

Sounds like an awesome case. I have mostly cracked vending and have not been pleased with the results. Too many cards with very poor centering and corner dings. I think racks are definitely the way to go. I cracked a couple of 86 rack cases and have a bunch of those cards at PSA now for grading. There is nothing more exciting than when grades finally pop. I have a monster submission at PSA right now that will likely take a while to be fully graded. I had to break it up into smaller groups so I will hopefully have at least one group of grades pop each week.
