Well, I finally did it! I joined the PSA 9 1978 Topps Forster club. Grades just popped. For some reason, my wife does not care as much as I would have liked. So, I will share the joy with you. Now is the hard part. I have my Dodgers team set, and the Forster would go well in it. However, how do I give up X hundreds of dollars? Feel free to make offers if you want to. I just do not know what to do when I can get a psa 8 59 Koufax or keep the Forster.

A great dillema to have though!

  • Brian,
Sell the card. You'll pick one up for under 20 bucks a year from now. I recently pulled two gorgeous 77 Luebbers from a vending box for my set and made this one expendable last week. Actually, I was planning on letting him go anyway. Take the money and run...Terry's a tub-a-goo anyway.

    Gotta love low-pop no-names...

    dgf

Interesting to note, I still have the bulk of my graded set in tact and have the mint raw cards for completion and as of now, my set is actually FREE.
  • BkritzBkritz Posts: 1,093 ✭✭
Does anyone know what the last Forster 9 went for? I think there was one on ebay a month or two ago.

    B
  • DGF makes a great point. Forster will go for less than $20 in a year. The prices paid for the card are dropping very quickly. The last one went for a little more than $100.

Fewer and fewer common cards in the set will command high prices.

I sold the Forster and two other Dodgers (one 86 topps 9 and one 88 10) for $150. Hopefully, you all are right and I will be able to get another Forster for $20 some day.

    Thanks for the advice.

I am still looking for Cey, Monday and Burke from the Dodger set. I sold my 2nd psa 9 Burke to a fellow collector and now I need it again.

    HELP!

    B
  • Brian,

If you are selling you set, why did you keep it closed when you retired the set. Wouldn't it be good for potential buyers to be able to see whats in the set? What is the point of keeping the set closed when you retire it? Didn't you once have scans of a lot of the cards listed? It would be nice to see potential buyers to see scans of all of the cards.
  • Alfiewt,

You're right, I did have scans of all the cards. I deleted the scans when I couldn't keep up with all the upgrades and it just became too time consuming. If a serious buyer really wants to see the cards then I can send scans of the desired cards. Just email me and I will zip them up. I still have scans of 90% of the cards.

My reason for closing the set, and I'm sure a few others have felt this way, is that a few people were bidding more than usual for low pop. cards than they have in the past because they knew what I needed. I could have opened the set back up when finished.

    That did not work.

    Hello all,

I have recently started working on a 78 set (my first graded set) I am sorry to see two of the top sets are up for sale. Spikemax is up on ebay I wish you both good luck in selling your sets. The 78's was the first set that I remember collecting (I loved playing the game on the back) My first goal was to get to 25% complete then take a short break I am planning on at least 1 wax box purchase to send in some of "my own cards" to put into my set. I also wanted to add I have enjoyed reading this thread it was enjoyable reading what some of you went through working on this set (Case breaks are always fun) image

  • Brian,

I'm sure if you send a short email to setregistry@collectors.com telling them you want the set open again they will open it up for you. It would be nice to see the set open again.

    George,

WELCOME ABOARD!!! It is always great to see new guys. I have plenty of PSA 8 and more than a few PSA 9 extras and some fine raw if you are in need. I hope you stick it out until the end ..... well, there never really is a end image

Wow, Spikemax is selling again? He jumped out last winter or around there and then jumped back in a couple months ago. Good luck with Bill wherever you are!

P.S. Me? I'm just starting on my 1978 quest! (I think I'm in 50th place! But I have another 30 to 40 commons to add to my new '78 registry set. That will make me a whopping 5% or so complete!) image

Did Bill get the $13,000 he was asking? If not, does that worry you, Brian? 13K seemed like a decent price for what he had...of course, yours is better.

Good luck. JP at ML is a good guy!

In my own humble opinion .... I find it VERY hard to believe that anyone would try and move a entire graded 78 set and expect to do "well" So much better results to be had by breaking it up .......

rbdjr ..... GOOD LUCK! Buy some unopened and lets have some FUN !!!!! image My best memories from collecting this set were the unopened busts and grading that followed!

Yeah, Dan...I don't get it either. Brian owns a gorgeous set; so does (did?) Bill. And so did Guy. Et al. Selling an entirely graded 1978 set doesn't seem to be the road to riches.

But, then, why do these top sets sell so frequently? Maybe Guy's and Bill's and Brian's are worth a lot more on the market than you and I believe. I especially have been very hard, and quite conservative, in my estimating the 78s' worth.

You, Frank, Mike and I should head up a "sub-category" on the Registry of 1978'ers who never sold out.

    And, never will???

  • I agree with you Nick. I see the 4 of us having our sets for a long time to come.

I certainly don't want to critisize anybody in any way. Who knows, perhaps they just don't have the time to sit down and break the whole monster down into single low pops, stars, rookies, subsets, team lots, team cards, PSA 10's, etc. Then scan everything , list everything, all of those packages, all of those trips to the PO ..... we are talking about ALOT of time and effort.

I do hope Brian gets whatever minimum he is looking for image I don't know what Bill is doing. His set is gone from the registry.

For those of you looking to beef up your set: a nice lot of PSA 9's from a reputable dealer is up on eBay, at an opening bid of less than $3 per card! It has some of the tough ones, too.

I would prefer to make one trade but am willing to split them up. My set is listed as GAB's 1978's The first set i collected and is up to date so you can see what I need. The cards I have are:

Wow the Bench is better than I thought it was. I would have liked to get that Bench but I really wanted that Randolph. When you get it could you also post a scan of it? Maybe I will get a nice one when I bust some packs open.

Dan, how did you end up doing after busting those 2 rack boxes, as I looked at your set there were alot of nice self submitted cards it it. But did you ever get the final rundown of the grades you recieved from those boxes? It is also nice seeing all those scans you have. I hope to start scanning some of mine in this week.
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,281 ✭✭✭✭✭
rbdjr1 --- SWEET. That card looks like it actually DESERVES the PSA 10 grade. Hope it looks just as nice in your hands!

mets, I did really really well with those rack boxes. They happened to be the most pristine well centered cards I have ever opened from this time period. I will post the submission results. Thanks for checking out all of those scans! Glad I did not do that for nothing

<< <i>rbdjr1 --- SWEET.

Mets it well be worth your money to go through your cards and pick out the good ones, but then send them to softparade for review. image

I was all set for a series of smack talk with the Twins and Yanks, then poof Oakland and Detroit had warm glasses of STFU for everyone. image
