I have a PSA 10 Morris that has that same left edge .... and I mean exactly. It was submitted by me. I knew it was a 9 but was suprised at the PSA 10 that I got back.
That 84 donruss is all because of you ArnyVee and the others on the 84 Donruss thread. You have posted some great pictures. I will start after I eat and clean up.
Did you pick those boxes up from Steve Hart at BBCE? just curious as i have been watching this thread for some time and after watching all the scans from softparade and the rest of the 78' crew i decided this week to start building the set also. I am planning on building the set in PSA 9 so wish me luck gang and any advice any of you guys can give me on where to obtain nice raw examples for grading would be greatly appreciated. I think this is one of the cleanest sets from the 70's and one of my favorites of coarse now all i have to do is convince softparade to sell me some of those nice raw cards he has stockpiled! lol Anyways best of luck to all of you guys and I am looking forward to building and learning all about this set from all of you
Yes, I did get those boxes from BBCE and hope to have some pictures up soon. I really enjoyed opening those packs and may do it again soon..... even though the outcome was not the best. In the first box the cards were well centered however most had a rough cut to the sides I did get a nice yount, but not much else. The second box the cards were not centered very well maybe 1 card out of every 2 packs to get a 9. The ryan in that box was borderline 8/9 centering, but then i noticed the top left hand corner kind of tailed away from the card so so that card ended up being dissapointing. but I did have fun opening all those packs and if anyone wants some gum lmk. also all the 84 Donruss cards were o/c no surprise there. and I did get a fairly nice Yankees team card from the 79 pack, 80 and 82 packs = zip O.
Good luck on your set I am also concidering droping down to a all 9 set as those cards are still very nice and some of the cards out of my boxes would fit in. (just not as many as I had hoped)
Thanks for the reply and i am looking forward to the scans I bid on a few PSA 9's today and Dan just sent me a list of some doubles he has so I'm off and running and it looks like its going to be a great set to build with so many enthusiastic guys building the '78's. I know from following this thread that Dan and a few of you guys have worked tirelessly on your sets and its great to see your accomplishments as thats a huge set to tackle in PSA 9 or better as i know alot of you are doing or have already done. Best of luck to all of you and thanks you again for the warm welcome Dan and George and i hope the two of you won't mind me picking your brain on specifics of this set from time to time. Are there any specific low pops in this set either of you have had a hard time finding in PSA 9 quality?
For me the toughest card to find in true PSA 9 condition is the #400 Nolan Ryan. Not only are most PSA 9's that hit e-bay too OC for me they run well over $400 bucks ....
As far as other tough cards? Make a note of these ..
#82 Giants Team #97 Stan Bahnsen #103 Tom Murphy #158 JOAQUIN ANDUJAR #165 Rennie Stennett #221 Chris Speir #256 JOE ALTOBELLI #319 ALAN ASHBY #328 BREWERS TEAM #330 Bob Watson #347 Terry Forster #349 Rick Camp #351 Jeff Torborg #402 Dave Campell #444 ROY HARTSIFELD #456 Vern Ruhle #481 Jackson Todd #506 Ron Blomberg #526 Reds Team #534 Wilbur Howard #538 Johnnie LeMaster #559 PHIL MANKOWSKI #563 Dave Radar #572 Rick Wise #576 SAM MEJIAS #597 STEVE DILLARD #642 Denny Doyle #724 Royals Team #725 Kurt Bevacqua

Where did you get that rack case from??? Dave and Adams ?????? Very cool! I bought a 3 box rack case a while back and had GREAT results! I hope you do to!!
Yes, I got the one from Dave and Adam's So far I am very happy with the centering (6 Packs in) A nice Jackson, Eck, Rose, Seaver, Piniella, Weaver (although my eyes are playing tricks on me for the manager cards) and even a nice Tanana. so far nothing off the list you posted the other day I am keeping my fingers crossed. No wax or gum stains though.
ArnyVee are you still looking for a 78 Tiant? lmk and i will see if i get 2 that will grade well.
Sounds like BOAT LOADS of FUN man! Please do keep us informed. Especially with the Murray's, molitors, #400 NOLAN RYAN ................ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I won this card, but was sent a raw example worth maybe $5 to $10 instead of a PSA 10 graded gem. I was hoping somebody knew this scan? I have a dispute claim with Paypal. Plus I used my credit card, as an extra line of safety. This really sucks!
A footnote: The seller claimed he had a family emergency and he had someone else mailing-out his auction items, and they sent me the wrong card (that just happened to be a raw Lou Whitaker rookie card!). He asked me to send him the incorrect card back and he would then refund me. Paypal said to wait until they sent me instructions on send his incorrect item back!
Oh, man...I hate to see a fellow '70s collector in a jam like this...but that seller's feedback is atrocious!
Anyway, can PSA help you sleuth it down? I often wondered if they keep tabs on which Registry sets the cert numbers reside. That's the best thing I can think of right now.
I sure hope you get your money back from that snake...because I doubt that you will ever see the PSA 10.
I wouldnt communicate with that seller or paypal anymore. Go directly to your credit card co. and scream fraud. Let them duke it out with paypal from that point on.
Very sorry to hear that happen rd.
"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." -- Yogi Berra
Try registering that card in a set, it may indicate who owns it if it has already been registered.
I'd contact your credit card company and ask for their advice about how to proceed. They will lookout for your best interests, PayPal will only look after their own interests. I wouldn't give them the opportunity to decide that the card you received is not significantly different than the one you received.
That really sucks. I stay away from all sellers with similiar feedback. But I certainly know how it gets when the WANT factor kicks in. Hope everything turns out well.

The card cert checks out ok, and it is not registered with a set (as I was able to add it to my set).
I did check with my credit card company. They will help me. I first want to use the "$1000 buyer protection" by Paypal. If you file a claim with your CC company, Paypal will not follow thru with a claim under "buyer protection". If I do not get anywhere with Paypal, I will be able to proceed with my credit card company.
I have an ebay message from the seller, stating that "there was a family emergency" and that he had someone helping him mail-out auction items. He admitted to sending me the wrong item, and said he was sorry. He said he would give me a refund. (Sounds pretty fishy?)
If he does or doesn't give me a refund, or send me the actual PSA 10 I won (as if he really had one to begin with?), the seller's message sent thru the ebay system should be "proof enough" for Paypal, ebay and my credit card company, that the wrong item was sent to me, as admitted by this seller.
<< <i> I have an ebay message from the seller, stating that "there was a family emergency" and that he had someone helping him mail-out auction items. He admitted to sending me the wrong item, and said he was sorry. He said he would give me a refund. (Sounds pretty fishy?)
rd >>
Hell yeah it sounds fishy. If the nutbag admitted to sending you the wrong item .... then where IS the card? Seems to me that he should still have it. Unless he sent it to a very happy person right now! Doubt it, I think he sucks and tried to scam you.
A couple more, The packs i'm trying to decide what to do with. The one Murray is the best centered I recieved. The Tram card is also the best centered card but it is stained.
Yes I had fun with opening these packs the 78's were the first cards I colected as a kid I probably only got 10-15 packs all year but I remember playing the game on the back of the cards so I decided this would be my first try on a graded set as well. I did not complete a set till 84 so I have had fun opening those as well. Currently my set is #17? on the registry list "GAB's 1978's the first set i collected" well behind yours that must be a great set to look at.
I am going through all those cards and will be sending in a submission on Wednesday hopefull a $5 special or it will go in as a $6 bulk I will post the results when they pop.
George
rb - very nice pickup on the Whitaker hope all goes well with the other one.
Once I upgrade 5 more cards I'll make the set visible with its 726 scans. I have some beautiful cards in the set. I went through a period of people bidding agressively on commons I needed even though they were extremely far from set completion. Hiding the set has saved me some cash.
When I get back I'll try to upgrade through submissions since the cards I need haven't appeared on ebay. I've started collecting the 1980 set while I've been searching for the 78s I need. Now I'm hooked on another monster set. 60% into it means it is too late to turn around.
Good luck on your set and thanks again for the scans.
Nice pickup rd.

If you want to PM me the cards you are looking to upgade I can see what I have out of the case and 2 boxes I will be sending cards in shortly (wednesday). Let me know what grade you are looking for them in. If I have an extra you welcome to them. 1st sub will be stars and set needs.
I am planning on submitting about 100-125 cards, figured that way if there is no $5 special at least it's only $6 per card. I am currently going over the team cards many of them have a slight diamond cut same with the managers. I am also going over the pop repost for low pop commons so it's not yet set as to how many I am sending in, but it will be over 100 cards. I noticed you did not do too bad with your 100+ sub I would love to add a bunch to my set.
I posted this earlier and don't know if you saw it? Just a quick reference to the low pops. There are other toughies too but here is the quick list. Also, maybe you should wait a few weeks to submit? I would bet there will be $5 specials that run through the holidays. But who knows....

I would submit the low-pop (< 10 PSA 9s) and stars and pick up the high-pop cards on ebay for less than the grading fees. Dan listed some great cards to start with. I paid more than $100 for some of the cards on that list in PSA 9. 1 went for more than $300.

After sleeping on it I decided to wait untill there is a $5 special and that way I can submit a few more cards. The total I came up with on the first pass was 135. I tried to get it down to 100 where the S+H did not double for just 35 cards. I will also go through some of my 84 topps and other misc cards and add a few to the sub. That way if the sub is around 200 cards I would minimize my costs.
Mike, I know what you are saying and it would be cheaper to just purchase the high pop 9's for less than the grading fee, but part of the reason to purchase the case was to kind of make the set "mine" So if I can add 100 or so cards that I submitted it would just feel more like my set than just something that I put toghther. but I will be on the lookout for the cards that did not "make the cut"
Dan, that list is tuff So far I only found 2 cards off the list worth submitting Reds Team and Torborg and the Torborg has a rough cut to it. oh well I guess I will keep my eyes out for them with everybody else.

You can't go wrong. PSA runs the $5 modern special pretty often and you will be saving well over 100 bucks. Keep us tuned in !!

Refund? I wonder who owns the real PSA 10?

Anyway, can PSA help you sleuth it down? I often wondered if they keep tabs on which Registry sets the cert numbers reside. That's the best thing I can think of right now.
I sure hope you get your money back from that snake...because I doubt that you will ever see the PSA 10.
Don't let them off the hook!

Stay tuned!

Hell yeah it sounds fishy. If the nutbag admitted to sending you the wrong item .... then where IS the card? Seems to me that he should still have it. Unless he sent it to a very happy person right now! Doubt it, I think he sucks and tried to scam you.

How many 78's are you submitting from that rack case and two wax boxes?

<< <i>After sleeping on it I decided to wait untill there is a $5 special and that way I can submit a few more cards. The total I came up with on the first pass was 135. I tried to get it down to 100 where the S+H did not double for just 35 cards. >>
You can't go wrong. PSA runs the $5 modern special pretty often and you will be saving well over 100 bucks. Keep us tuned in !!
