Bob, not sure if this helps, but I would take the PSA 10 Yastrzemski off your hands (if no one wants it) - provided that there actually is a PSA 10 Yaz in that set. If you look at the catalog, it says in the description that there is a PSA 10 Yaz, but the picture shows a PSA 9 Yaz. Not sure what is right - but if it's a 10, I'd take it.
Anyone see the Bob Watson PSA-9 sell for $111 on E-bay? Since there are only 8 in existence, all of which I'm sure are in high-grade registry sets - another "nine" won't be coming around for a very long time.
I have a vending set that was put together years ago of 78' baseball. I took a look at the pop report and the cards with the least amount 10'S or 0's in 10's I sent into PSA for a sampler to see if they come back as strong as the Star cards did. I will post them when i get the grades. I think i sent in around 15 to 20 of them from my 100 card order at the end of November.
Yes, I did happen to notice the Watson I was not expecting to get it as my top bid was just over 125, figured Bob or someone else would want it more than that. Or are they saving up for Brian's set. I think spikemax is still in the lead but his original autobid has been met. Of course Brian would not mind him or anyone else bidding again.
Carew good luck on your sub lots of interisted people here. Did you submit a Carew - no 10s yet.
As I was typing that last message my grades came through. 93 cards from 78. 10 - 10's , 66 - 9's, 14 - 8's, 2-5 and 1 to small. I did try to get some of the tuff cards with this sub Torborg 1-8 and 1-9, Speir- 8, and Mankowski -9
I also sent in some 84 donruss cards (That thread is a very good read for a great set) and did ok Gwynn-9, Madlock-8, Wockenfuss-9 these were from 3 packs I orderd with the 78 stuff I got eairler. They were the only ones centered even close. I think even the puzzle peices were off center.
If someone wants to post the sub for me it is # 605547 zip 48309
All of us on the Board have been trying to find that creep who keeps trimming those 1978 Jim Slatons. Let us know where you bought those cards...we'll put that loser behind bars!
Since I purchased this stuff unopened from BBE and D&A I think we are looking for someone in their 70's. I don't think we will get much sympathy from the Judge, but if we could show he was responcible for the Ryan o/c ......
Since my sample test did better than expected, I went through and checked off the 10's with no pops. Out of the 69 cards with none, i believe 14 of mine have that shot at a 10. Spent the last hour going over them just like i did on this last batch. The following going in will be #'s 148(Thornton)--a 9 just sold over $100 the other day, #245,#320,#324,#344,#348,#353,#431,#522,#536,#555,#587,#651,#706,#711
I submitted these to get 9's on the low pops and most of the stars, 1-9 and 1-8 on the Molitor RC's, and mixture of about 65/35 high-end 9's and 10's on the rest. Needless to say, I drew a tough grader and am a little disappointed.
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10. ______________________________________ The best presents in life are the ones you give yourself!
I felt if I came away with atleast $15k then I did pretty good. Auctioning this set off through Ebay, I believe, would have been a waste of time and money.
Given the size of the set...auctioning it off complete was a lot less work and hassle. I probably wouldn't have received much more if I had broken it up given the Paypal/Ebay fees. You would have to ask John (Wondo) when he's done breaking it up on the outcome.
I'm now off to 1955 Bowman race. If anyone has any PSA 8's or 9's they want to sell then please contact me.
Good luck to all you guys on upgrading your sets (I would contact John if your looking to upgrade...I know several have already).
Then, Brian...from all of us on the 1978 Board, I'm very happy you got even more than you expected from Memory Lane. Congrats!
As you have done, I have also turned my attention to some of my other sets. I'm working on my 1967 in 8, and 1962 in 7/8. Yeah, I'll still pick up an occasional card to upgrade my '78 set...like the Hiller last week...but my heart is back in the 60's right now. (I am keeping my '78 set until my kids dispose of it through probate.)
But '55 Bowman? In 8/9? Best wishes! I see you're about one-third done. We shall follow your progress in unseating Midnight Cowboy.
And while I'm thinking of it, Merry Christmas to everyone on the '78 Board, and Happy New Year!
Brian - I'm glad you are happy with what you received for your set. It was great having you on board a time. You will always be a '78er in my book. I was one of the under bidders at $17,446. I didn't want to spend more than $21,000 with the juice. I wish I knew you what you were looking to get for the set. After the $25K we talked about before your last round of upgrades, I figured you were looking for even more money. Knowing you might have been happy with less makes me kick myself for not contacting you. Instead, I just rat holed money in anticipation of the set coming for auction. Good luck on the 1955's. Frank

Nope...just trying to get ahead of the game for one of my 2007 goals.....the "Rookies of the '70s" registry set.
Figured that the '78s shouldn't be too hard to get. I really like the simple design of the '78s and this gives me a good excuse for picking some up. I've already got an Eddie Murray in PSA 8, J.Morris PSA 9 and a Molitor/Trammell in PSA 8.

One of the great things that makes the 1978 set so popular is the proliferation of Rookie Cards. It was the first year of 726 cards, and Topps loaded it with first-time cards of guys. In fact, in addition to the 701-711 series, there are over 50 Rookie Cards in that set!
Lots of marginal first year guys are peppered in that set, but the only one I don't see on your list, who was a pretty decent player, is #674 Ray Knight.
Good luck! I'm sure John (who won Brian's set) can help you easily...especially since most of us on the Registry don't need any of the players you need.
Art Howe was close in the ranks. He ranked a 31.0 and the cutoff was 35.0.
I'm using the WARP system. Wins Above Replacement Player. The number of wins this player contributed, above what a replacement level hitter, fielder, and pitcher would have done, with adjustments only for within the season. It should be noted that a team which is at replacement level in all three of batting, pitching, and fielding will be an extraordinarily bad team, on the order of 20-25 wins in a 162-game season.
Here's the whole 1978 list. You can see that there are a couple of other "close but no cigar" players...

It feels so nice to read and post on this thread. There are no affected members in this '78 group at all. Our Number One Set leader...Frank...is inspiring without being pontificating. Though he very well could be an authority, he conducts himself with far too much dignity to act as such. (Check out another 70's "Official" thread if you want to read the comments of a know-it-all/blowhard/self-righteous Registry leader.)
Dan, our thread originator, is about the friendliest poster in PSA. I've never read a sarcastic or unkind word of his in two years. On any thread, not just ours.
We've watched guys like Bill and Brian and Guy shoot through the Registry, but never have either of them intimidated or demeaned any of us as they darted up the charts. We happily pulled for you all!
A couple of members made significant gains into the Top Five in 2006...namely Mike and Bill. Way to go, guys...and thank you for not rubbing our noses in your successes. You guys are first class members and you belong here with us.
Good luck in '07 to GI, Jeff and Heavy...as you push your way into the Top Five, remember that there are a lot of folks here whom you can count on if you need help. This is a totally cool group of players.
And finally, a New Year's wish for us all: May we find what we need as John breaks up and sells off Brian's stupendous set!
<< <i> Dan, our thread originator, is about the friendliest poster in PSA. I've never read a sarcastic or unkind word of his in two years. On any thread, not just ours. >>
Well, THANK GOODNESS you don't read any of the "Sports Talk" forum threads
It's great to see you guys always posting and keeping the entertainment alive. I dont contribute much to the boards, but always read what is going on. Thank you all for making collecting 78's enjoyable. -Jerry (aka GI aka blondmoment).
Collecting '52-'54 in PSA 7, '55 to '67 in PSA 8, '68 to '79 in PSA 9. See me on the set registry as GI's XXXX Set. Thx.
Its coming along real slowly. Im stuck on the last few cards I need in PSA 9 or 10. I cant seem to locate Stanley, Rivers, or even the team card. I also need the RC that has the Molitor/Trammell on it too but that isnt much of a priority since I really dont wanna lay out that $$ just for the Klutts to complete the set.
For that $$ Id rather pass that card over and put it towards completing my other team and player sets.
"The other teams could make trouble for us if they win." -- Yogi Berra
You guys following auction 120070556846? The seller says he at one time had the Number One set on the Registry. Who could that be? I only remember Frank, Brian, and possibly Bill W and Guy as our leaders.
This seller is from Georgia. Anyone know who it is?
Wanted to let everyone know I just joined the the exclusive 100% complete 1978 set club!!!! My goal was to have it done by the end of 2006 in all PSA 9 or better but I came up just short.... that damn Forster card. Oh well, the hunt will contine for the 6th PSA 9 Forster (I was 0-3 on personal submissions last year with all PSA 8's) as I now move my focus to completing the '73 set. Good luck to those of you fast nearing completion and a special belated congratulations to the few of you already there (Frank, Mike, Dan, and Nick) as I now personally know how difficult it was. Finally, best wishes to all '78ers in the upcoming year.

I don't see your set updated to 100% yet but I bet you can't wait! It was very fun watching you leap frog past me and others as you made your '06 run! Best of luck with the 73's .... another fine looking set! By all means please keep checking in around here!
<< <i>Would have to be Guy Barrena? He was from Georgia and did at one time have the #1 set. He has posted in this thread at various times .... >>
yep, its me. Clearing out the last remnants of my good ole 78's.
Nick/SOM its amazing how you continually forget who i am, i mean, we've only emailed each other numerous times over the years concerning 78's, mostly me trying to buy singles from you and you wanting an arm and a leg -heh- oh well 8-(
Good Luck to all the 78's, i still lurk occassionally ps - thank goodness Axtell finally got booted, he was one of the reasons i went away, its hard reading the same stupid attacks over and over and over again and trying to reason with someone who had absolutely NO common sense.
Softy, keep up the good work, Frank, glad to see your back where you belong!!

Since I purchased this stuff unopened from BBE and D&A I think we are looking for someone in their 70's. I don't think we will get much sympathy from the Judge, but if we could show he was responcible for the Ryan o/c ......
Cards just popped tonight. Overall happy with my test sub from my vending set.

Good luck we are pulling for you.

Nick
Brian

Figured that the '78s shouldn't be too hard to get. I really like the simple design of the '78s and this gives me a good excuse for picking some up. I've already got an Eddie Murray in PSA 8, J.Morris PSA 9 and a Molitor/Trammell in PSA 8.

Too much Holiday cheer down here...

Happy New Year, 1978 Topps Baseball Collectors!

Well, THANK GOODNESS you don't read any of the "Sports Talk" forum threads
Thank You for the kind words!

This seller is from Georgia. Anyone know who it is?

the exclusive 100% complete 1978 set club!!!!
My goal was to have it done by the end of 2006
in all PSA 9 or better but I came up just short....
that damn Forster card.
Oh well, the hunt will contine for the 6th PSA 9
Forster (I was 0-3 on personal submissions last
year with all PSA 8's) as I now move my focus to
completing the '73 set.
Good luck to those of you fast nearing completion
and a special belated congratulations to the few
of you already there (Frank, Mike, Dan, and Nick)
as I now personally know how difficult it was.
Finally, best wishes to all '78ers in the upcoming
year.

<< <i>Would have to be Guy Barrena? He was from Georgia and did at one time have the #1 set. He has posted in this thread at various times .... >>
yep, its me. Clearing out the last remnants of my good ole 78's.
Nick/SOM its amazing how you continually forget who i am, i mean, we've only emailed each other numerous times over the years concerning 78's, mostly me trying to buy singles from you and you wanting an arm and a leg -heh-
oh well 8-(
Good Luck to all the 78's, i still lurk occassionally
ps - thank goodness Axtell finally got booted, he was one of the reasons i went away, its hard reading the same stupid attacks over and over and over again and trying to reason with someone who had absolutely NO common sense.
Softy, keep up the good work, Frank, glad to see your back where you belong!!
Hey Guy, whats up? WHat have you been doing outside of 78 land?
