Of course I remember dealing with you, Guy. I never knew you were from Georgia, though. Of course, I remember our dealings sort of exactly opposite your representation of them...

Happy New Year! And yeah...as Dan asked...what are you working on now? (I have always secretly coveted your 1961 set).

I don't think any of us can help you on this, Terry. But check back on April Fools' Day.

  • Terry -- you might have to mortgage something to get a 78 Topps Ryan in PSA 10. According to the pop report, it'd be a 1 of 1 (whenever one is graded a 10, anyway).

Good luck finding that puppy in a 10... Topps hired blind chimps with bad markers and dull scissors to produce their 78 line.
Nolan Ryan & Edgar Martinez are my favorite players...

If anyone has a 1978 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 9 that needs a new home, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks for pointing out my error.

Hey Guy, whats up? WHat have you been doing outside of 78 land? >>

i considered posting twice there for a second to get mister 1000 right after i noticed the 999, but passed.

Things have been a little crazy, had some things happen business wise that forced my hand a little in the pursuits of the 78's/79's (and most collectible stuff). Do see the light at the end of the tunnel however. I've enjoyed living vicariously through your guys pursuits of still my favorite set all time and wish everyone well with it.

I'm going to try to finish up my 51 topps ringside boxing set one day (minus the murphy of course) and have my eye on starting a high grade mars attacks some day. I can't wait till my boys get a little older so i can share that 61 set with them.

    Happy New Year to everyone!!!

    Dan,
What does a nice PSA 9 Ryan sell for these days? Are you willing to purchase a SGC 96 and take your chances in crossing it (not that I have one, just curious)?

RBDjr...an alert for you as you post the narrative on your cards:

avoid at all costs using apostrophes in your descriptions!

The best examples I can give you are the entries for your cards #28 and #29. Look at what you typed, and then check out what appears in the box that opens when you click on the 'more' link.

    Crazy, isn't it?

I learned the hard way as I typed bios in my own set. You'll just have to rephrase anything that will require an apostrophe (and possibly a couple of other punctuation marks, if I am not mistaken...)

    Carole...if you're listening...get IT on this one!

Sorry Dan, I don't have one.

I'm hoping to cross the 75% barrier this year, slow steady progress. I'm kind of a lurker on this thread since I do most of my purchasing in lots rather than singles. I guess that will be changing pretty soon!

And the one that not only helped upgrade my '78 set, but also gave me a nice boost in my Thurman basic and master set...

    Brian,

That Yankee team card looks sweet! Obviously all I can judge via scans are centering and that card looks TOP NOTCH! Congrats.

    Guys,

I have a slew of PSA 8's available. Just make me a modest offer. I know there are a few guys collecting 8's on the registry.

Glad you guys are happy with Brian's cards - It has been wacky but a lot of fun. I cannot believe how fast the set has been moving; I can only attribute that to the high quality and amount of work that Brian put into the set. image

There are still about 225 cards not spoken for. PM me if you would like a list.

    Dan,

If you look at the list remaining, there are quite a few low pops left. Collectors seem to be filling specific chunks and/or getting their favorite cards. I have had a few get the most bang for the buck, also - conserving the ebay chase for the end. I will do a postmortum when all is said and done (without getting into personal specifics). This has been a nearly fulltime effort.

Edited to add: I have tried to be reasonable in pricing - stretching for really low pops and cool cards and discounting the others. I hope everybody feels this way. image We've made all the deals work with one or two exceptions - I appreciate everyone's flexibilty. My goal is not to own these.

    carew,

I saw that Watson and for a second thought that you made that card a bit less tough in PSA 9. Nice sub.

I got my care package from John today, Brian did a great job of collecting high qulity cards All these cards look like 10's or 11's even the Bill Madlock card with the smude near the letters is great.
Thanks John for taking a chance and making this great set available.

I have been meaning a long time to put up a couple of pictures of card displays I have up in my office. They are, of course, 1978 Topps cards. Here is the first one:

    image

I started collecting baseball cards in 1978 and the A's at the time were my favorite team. I still remember pulling out and looking for A's players. I am presently working on getting all of the A's cards in PSA 10. Thanks to Wondo, I have a pretty good head start!

    Here is the next photo:

    image

I also love the team cards from the 78 set. It is funny to note that the team photos appear the same for some years for many teams throughout the late 70s and early 80s. I really like this display as well.

So, I get to look at 78s all day when I work. Have fun!

    Great displays!!!

This will be the last week for the break - about 185 cards left - 150 PSA 10's. Please send in more requests! image

Next week I'll put the remaining non-10s on ebay and put the PSA 10s into my ebay store.

Thanks to everyone for participating in the break!
    Wondo

    Guys,

I have a spare # 503 Ike Hampton PSA 9 available. Tough card. I won a better example IMO on e-bay tonight so the first reasonable offer gets my spare. You can view a scan in my registry set. Centering could be alot better for a nine top to bottom so offer what you want image Just figure $2.50 for shipping.

    Dan,

I did not know you were interisted in the 9. After your post on the 10 I looked at your set to see if you needed the 9. Oh well in the future if you or anyone else want somthing just drop me a line. Here is a larger picture of the 9. Centering is a little off l/r and there are some blue print dots on the card. I do hope you like it though.

Good luck, bri. I've been trying to pick up that lousy card for three years. I get outbid every time!
