George...I will pay you an unreasonable amount of money for #97, if he is still available.

    Sorry Nick,

I was refering to somthing that I have in a 10 that I could replace with a 9 like the Palmer or Tanana, (My Palmer 9 is on ebay now and I alrady got rid of my Tanana 9) the tough cards like Bahnsen that I could not replace with at least a 9 I would not be interisted in moving. The problem with my offer is many people already think I am paying an unreasonalbly high amount for some of the cards I have purchased image and as I said there are no cards in the set I am looking to move. I just keep an open mind on some of them.

    George

  • George,

    Thanks for the info.

    Nick,

Just received my Memory Lane catalog. (Oh, is that catalog in dire need of a decent writer!) That's your set on the Rick Reilly page, isn't it, Brian? Good luck with it!

We'll all be following you very closely.

    Matt,

Good luck with your submission, please keep us all informed on how it goes. How manny cards did you submit?

I noticed that there is a very high end 78 set for sale at the Memory Lane auction. Is there any chance the seller will come close to getting his money back? I thoght the only reason for doing a nice set from the 70s on was the enjoyment of collecting. Am I wrong? The SMR is more than 30K. For that kind of money one could get a really nice set from the 60s.
  • SOMSOM Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭
Markj...that set is being marketed by one of our own. He is a great friend of these boards. We are pulling hard for him to get top price for that set.

If you had ever dealt with him, or if you knew him better, you would be rooting just as hard for him.

Besides, there are 60's sets all over the place. The Memory Lane '78 set being auctioned? It's truly one-of-a-kind.

    Wish him well!!!

Any of you '78ers have duplicates in PSA 8 or better of E.Murray or Molitor/Trammell rookies? Also, PSA 9s of Lance Parrish, Jack Morris & Lou Whitaker?

  • Nick...Thanks for the kind comments.

Markj... My intention was never to make a profit. I never expected to even break even. This was just something for me to do as a hobby. The SMR on this set is over $32,500. Did I invest that much money... NO. This is like Nick said though "truly a one of a kind" set.

Am I taking a chance selling it with Memory Lane instead of breaking it up... Yes. Memory Lane at the moment is not doing me any favors with the low price they put on it but we'll see how it turns out in a couple of weeks. Currently at $7k it is a STEAL.

Thanks and I hope one you guys on the boards claims it (or a group of you).

I certainly wish you the best of luck. If I had a ton of money I would be interested. I realize that we all collect what appeals to us. I am just surprised that anyone would sell a set that clearly took much time and effort to put together. I will not sell my 61 set (complete at 7.99) unless the wolf is at the door. You set your own priorities, and you have obviously decided that it is time to move. Good luck in your next endeavor.

    Bri,

If you broke it up you would realize many more dollars I am sure ..... unless at least two guys battle it out. That is a TON of 10's man .....

WITH THAT SAID ..... it would obviously take a major effort on your part to list 726 cards individually and or in small lots. So, GOOD LUCK !!!!!!
I have a feeling that there are more then just a couple of eyes who KNOW the value of your set given all of those 10's image

Wow! I cannot believe these 78s came back so low. Not a 10 in sight.

Oh well. If anyone needs any of these, just PM. I may keep Burke for my Dodger set but could be pursuaded to let it go. Everything else is available.

    I agree with you, Dan!

There have GOT to be at least two dealers out there who have calculated the break-up value of Brian's set. And when the hammer drops on December 14, there will then exist one of those rare win-win-win-win situations in our hobby:

    Brian will receive his money
The dealer who won will have made a profitable purchase
Frank will lay claim to top ATF set that actually still exists
You, Mike, Bill and I will be able to pick up some of Brian's cards to augment our Top-Five sets

It'll be a Merry Christmas to all!

    Rd,

I'm glad you like it. Just remember me after you win the set. image. I am sure your extras would look good in most of our sets.

Does anyone remember what Spikemax's set went for It was listed at 13,000? on ebay. I do not think it was as nice but it was a nice set.

    George

  • Good luck with the sale Brian. If I was chasing the top spot I wouldn't hesitate on placing the winning bid. You have great looking cards in that set. Maybe Dan can organize a group purchase where everybody wins.

Anyone here going to the "Fort Washington" show this weekend?

If all you fellas decide to make a group purchase on that set keep me in mind for my Yankees set. I only need a couple, but Id definately be interested in upgrading some 9's to 10's if possible.

That is one amazing set !

  • I've started a spreadsheet and have distributed all the
PSA 8 and 9 cards. I started at the top of the registry to
fill holes and worked my way down with what ever cards
were left. I included GI, JeffOKC, Heavy, FabFrank, and
Tom D as I've sold and traded with them all in the past
and they have been very receptive. I will contact them this
weekend to see if they're in too.
I guess the next step would be to contact Funky Frank out
of respect to our '78 "Godfather" and see if he wants all
    available PSA 10 upgrades.
The leftover 10's can then get divided up and the final step
will be to e-mail out the spreadsheet to everyone and we can
decide how much to offer so Brian makes out as best as possible.

I'll make contact with eveyone tonight and hopefully finalize the
set breakup to spreadsheet within 48 hours.

Then, maybe for a third step, "I guess" it might be okay to contact these two players:

    * the guy who originated this '78 Topps message board and
    * the guy who owns the second-longest running set in the '78 Registry

to see if they might be interested?

Yep, and at about 50% SMR without researching the specifics. By late 70's Topps standards the "great deal" that seemed possible with this set when it was first listed is gone.

    ISO 1978 Topps Baseball in NM-MT High Grade Raw 3, 100, 103, 302, 347, 376, 416, 466, 481, 487, 509, 534, 540, 554, 579, 580, 622, 642, 673, 724__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ISO 1978 O-Pee-Chee in NM-MT High Grade Raw12, 21, 29, 38, 49, 65, 69, 73, 74, 81, 95, 100, 104, 110, 115, 122, 132, 133, 135, 140, 142, 151, 153, 155, 160, 161, 167, 168, 172, 179, 181, 196, 200, 204, 210, 224, 231, 240

  • The great deal is still there. It's only 50% of SMR and that's not accounting for all the hard to find 9's and 10's. There is a great deal of resale potential here. I've noticed there is some competition again with building this set. If I had a crystal ball several months ago I might have broken it up myself.

    Brian,

For the most part 78 Topps does not do much better then 50% of SMR .... except for those low pops and really nice 10's. But you are right, the 78 set activity has increased and not only from rd(Bob) image

    Bob,

Nice cards ...... that Twins card is still considered pretty tough in my book!

Centering on it looks great. How is the surface ???

Dan, the surface on the Twins Team card looks ok. I would say the surface is an average PSA 9. I agree,

    'Twins tis a tuffie'!

I really like the notes you are adding to the "Owner's Comments" section of your Registry set. Good stuff! I hope you keep it up for all of the cards...it's like reading baseball card backs!

My question: why not attach these pictures you've been posting here? They'd look a heck of a lot better in the context of your Registry set.

Nick, thanks! I just began to add "Comments" on a few cards last week. Adding pics? Maybe later?

Adding picks is one hell of a chore. I started out doing it on my set and just kept up. It took alot of time. I am slacking on scanning my "new" additions of over 2 months ago.

After posting here a few times and amassing a very small amount of 78s, I have started this set. I am going to need something to keep me busy in light of the fact I am about finished with my 71 set. I will probably work on the 78 for years but it I am in no hurry. It is my all time favorite set (the year I started collecting). My goal is to do the set in straight 9 with 8s on the low pops. From looking at eBay it looks like it will be relatively economical to put together in graded form; 9s of most of the cards are relatively cheap. It also looks like it may be cheaper to pick up many of the 9s already graded rather than submitting myself. If my goal is not to get 10s in the set, I really have no incentive to submit (though I will probably still submit some cards time to time and use any 10 sales to fund multiple 9s).

I already have one of the big ones in 9 (the Molitor) so I just need the Murray (I will hold off on that one for a while). Right now, I am just going to focus on PSA 9 commons. If anyone is interested in moving a bulk lot of PSA 9 commons (no need to worry about low pops), let me know.

This set should go really nice with my 1978 Donruss KISS set. 1978 was a great year for cards in my humble opinion. I was 7 at the time and remember both the 78 Topps set and the KISS set dearly. Those KISS cards are tough though; I will probably finish the 78 Topps set first at the rate I am going on the KISS set.

Well, enough of my ramblings. Good luck to all on your sets.

Man, this is AWESOME. Welcome aboard the 78 train Meef! I have some low pops in PSA 8. I will check for you.

By the way, I think the #400 Nolan Ryan is the key card in this set. It is just sooooo tough. I know its all about the HOF rookies and stuff but I still think the Ryan is the key card in the set. ...... ESPECIALLY if you have aspirations of a complete PSA 9 set.

I would still think we should try, somehow to secure the complete set from the Memory Lane Auction.

    Here's what I propose:

    1. 10 proposed participants.
    2. A proposed high bid of: $ 17,446.00 (+17.5% buyer's premium or: $ 3,053.05, and fugure: $ 100.00 for shipping)
    3. For a proposed grand total of: $ 20,599.05 ($ 17,446.00 + $ 3,053.05 + $ 100.00)
    4. So, I total investment of: approx. $ 2,060 per Participant.

The current high bid is: $ 15,946.00. That would leave us the possibility of three bids: $16,446, $16,946 or $17,446.

Pricing Breakdown: (Includes conservitive pricing on the star cards & lo pops!)

    19 - PSA 10 Stars: $ 2,115
    11 - PSA 9 Stars: $ 472
    10 - PSA 8, 7, 6 (Incl. PSA 8 Ryan) $ 15
    170 - PSA 9's (@ $3, this includes commons & lo pops) $ 510
    516 - PSA 10's (@ $ 27.78, this includes commons & lo pops) $ 14,334.00

    Now, let's suppose we can round-up 10 participants (@ $ 2,060 each!).

    What next?

    1. Let's say we win the lot;
    2. each particpant contributes their share;
    3. we will offer all items, to fellow particpants in a democratic manner and items that cannot be offered to a participant, plus all other items will be offerered over "controlled sales" over time, on ebay. And we will split up all proceeds equally between all participants.
    4. I am confident, we will all pick-up some nice cards for your sets, plus we should be able to "offer-up" the balance of these great cards on ebay, easily matching or exceeding the concertive numbers above.

Let's keep this simple, even if you didn't want a single card for your set, I'm confident a participant would realize a profit.

So let's first decide who wants in? I hope potential participants like spikemax, augustaman & George, and myself would maked a good beginning?

I'm already set-up with Memory Lane, as I'm bidding on multiple items (i.e., The Three Stoges, etc.) and I did already make a stab myself for this set, with five bids, my highest bid being $ 15,446.00 (on 12/1/2006), and I think spikemax also said he bid. I would just feel more at ease, laying out 2K with other participants, rather than trying to "snag it" on my own!

So, if we want this set we need to move on it!

Please post or PM me, ASAP, your willingness to put up approx. 2K, so let's go, and have some fun bidding this set together!!!!!!!

    Participants:

    1. rbdjr1 (Bob)
    2. agustaman (Bill)
    3. Mets (George) - (???)
    4. Spikemax (Bill) - (???)
    5. SinibobCards - (???)
    6. QWIK - (???)
    7. softparade (Frank) - (???)
    8. Frank Smith - (???) (Frank, do it for a little 2007 profit!) image
    9. ...and you! image
    10. ...and you too! image

    hurry!

    rd

  • Come on guys, you can do it. I think Spikemax is still in the lead on this set. Are you Bill?
  • Hi Brian,

I'm still in the lead for the time being.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Just got a pleasant surprise today; had some grades pop that included a number of 78s. The jewel of the lot was hitting a PSA 9 on a Murray rookie. I now have both the Trammell and Murray in 9. Glad to get those beasts out of the way!

I did think I would hit more 10s, but I did get a bunch of 9s and the Murray takes a lot of the sting away. The PSA 10 Mary Perez is for trade since I don't collect PSA 10 78s. Thanks for looking.

    Mefer,

Very nice job on the 78's Murray is a nice one to get out of the way. I have a second sub of my 78's at PSA now when they pop if you want any of the 9's I don't need let me know. Also I have about 15 extra 9's now including Seaver and Jackson if you are interesting in them let me know and I will hold back putting them on Ebay.

Welcome to the 78'ers If you look back through the pages you will find a great deal of usefull information posted by the members here. Dan recentley put up a list of some of the tuff cards to get I think all were POP 10 or lower in PSA 9. He also has a set for his doubles in the regisrty. What is the name of your set?

    George

  • tough grader today! But did land a few toughies!
