  • Just sent off 132 cards for grading. I hope PSA got their measuring calipers oiled up.
  • PM or email me at Barkusd@gtlaw.com if you have any graded 57s for sale. If the price is right I am a buyer!

Unless one is doing this AND a 60s set.

Or, in my case, when 'one' is doing this set and TWO 70s sets! Sheesh.

But, thanks for the atta boy! I made an 'off-eBay' deal, so that'll add about a half dozen cards in PSA 7 or so and my first PSA 8! image

That should help me out...give me a nice boost. As always, if anyone is looking to deal their PSA 6 or affordable PSA 7s of the '57 set, drop me a PM!

  • I was 6 for 13 on my snipes for the PSA 7s that rockbottomsports had up last night. I guess that's not too bad. Tonight are the 63s turn and so far I'm getting really good deals.

One of the dangers of doing both 1957 and 1963 is that there are quite a few players common to both sets, besides the obvious stars. I was going through my list and saw a 63 Bob Friend up and thought I had already gotten one. Come to realize it was the 57 Bob Friend that I had just picked up.
  • In looking at the Registry standings, I notice that's there's significant gap between #20 and #21. People must like seeing their name on the front page. It also confirms that I'll likely never reach #20, not that it matters much.

  • I know, I only have limited number of characters for the sig before exceeding maximum number (can this be changed?). I went with the 61 and 63 for now. I think after I get my submission back, I'll link it up.

Among the 8 psa7 cards I picked up last night, I got 2 SP for under $15. I think I was fortunate that rockbottom put this batch from his PSA 7 set all ending at the same time. Sniping is the only way to do something like this.

63% unofficially done and waiting for 132 cards to get graded soon.

I picked up a couple of cards last night including a Mike Garcia PSA 6 and a PSA 7 common (Strickland) which brings me to a tie for 55th place. So, moved up a couple of notches. image

Added another 4 commons in PSA 7 and received my "gift" (thanks!) of two PSA 6 commons which brings me to a set rating of 0.30 (I know, I just started it! image ) and puts me within spittin' distance of the 52nd spot. Slowly but surely....

Added another 5 cards that I won (1 PSA 6, 3 PSA 7's & 1 PSA 8) to bring my growing collection to the 52nd overall spot! image

I'm doing a lot better with these commons than I originally thought I would. 7s are going for less than $15 and those 6s are less than $8. Good stuff so far! I'm not even thinkin' of the cards for Mantle, Williams, Brooks & Frank Robby, Koufax, Drysdale....sheesh...gonna be some tough ones and big money to complete this sucker! image

Sometimes I just don't know where the prices are. Last Saturday, I picked up (8) PSA 7 including (4) PSA 7 SP for 35-55% SMR. Other times I would be lucky to get them for 75% SMR.

ArnyVee, please remember that the Registry is not a competition except with one's self. It is the quality and joy of building sets (esp. this great one) that means most, not where one ranks.

I'm just trying to keep myself motivated to keep going and to have a place to keep track of my progress. I hope that I'm not comin' off like some guy that just wants to win the competition or something. If that was the case, I would've never have started to build this set. I can't compete with those big boys at the top. With the 1972 set, I had Dave Barkus to compete with and we kept each other motivated and have helped each other out with cards on several occasions. Just tryin' to get things going here with the '57 set. image

Which was why I dropped down to the PSA 6-7 target for this set last year. When I saw the going prices for the Mantle, Williams and Mantle/Berra in PSA 7 (esp. nicely centered ones), I thought no way I could do that. But as you saw at the start of this thread, I picked up some really nice PSA 6 stars that were clearly better than many PSA 7 that I have seen.

Well, three more cards picked up last night (PSA 6 E.Slaughter & 2 PSA 7s) brings me to a tie for 51st place overall! Climbing the list steadily. And, I've been doing it all at 50% of SMR which is great! image

I added a few cards that I picked up in a trade and now I'm sitting in 50th! image

I've still been picking up commons in 7s for less than $13 each. I'm sure as I get further into the set I'll have to end up spending more per card, but at this point it has been rather affordable compared to what I'd thought it would run.

LOL...I'm saying that now before spending on those star cards. image

Earlier in this thread, I talked about my bad luck with getting and holding on to the 57 Clemente card. Well, I just got one from a favorite dealer (alan munson) and I hope the third time is the charm...

You are not going to believe these grades. Nearly all of these cards were bought at the Ex/Mt price from $3-6; and a majority of them came back as PSA 7 (and a couple PSA 8 image )! There were a few clunkers, which were expected, but once again - PSA failed to follow directions of "No Qualifiers" despite it being printed on every label.

The ones I was sweating about were the (5) SP: 281, 288, 290, 299 and 318, which I paid more than $6 for. Nailed 4 of them, which ain't bad.

What do you guys think of this set and the price it's up to? With only about 60 cards graded (ranging from 6-8) and commons Ex-Nmmt, it seems encouraging to see that it could get close to $9,000 (but probably not meet reserve).
  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Posts: 1,794 ✭✭
Looks like it's relisted for the 3rd time. Last time it got up to $8,600 not meeting reserve (and a bin of $14,000+). Now it has a bin of $9,000.

No, sorry. I'll be selling all of the 5s and Qualifiers in one big lot. The rest are not dupes.

Hey guys, how is everybody's sets coming?? i am down to about 10-15 cards to upgrade to better centered copies, and still need to have raw graded.

After completing the 61 All-Stars set in October and finished selling everything I wanted to sell, I have been taking a much deserved break in November and December (and playing a lot of Civ4).

Last I checked, my 1957 Set was 61% complete and sitting at #30 or so. Not sure if I'll buy cards for myself as my Christmas gift but usually I start buying a lot around my birthday at the end of January. I do think I'll be able to finish the 57 set in 2006.

By the way, do any of you think the 2006 Heritage might have any impact on the 57 cards?
  • I think that will affect the market for 57's I'm not sure to what affect but I am excited to see the 2006 heritage this year.

1957 Topps was the first set I collected growing up and it is still one of my favorites.
Need 5 upgrades and 3 holes to fill to complete the set in psa 8 or better. Currently rate 12th(ugh!) with 7.92 but have some 8s on the way. Goal is 8.02 to pass that guy Steve with all the "excellent" sets.
I my mind, Frank Evanov(Mantlefan) is the king of the 59s and my friend although I may never sell him my psa 9 Kluzewski. Gary Moser sold that to me 8 years ago for $40--has to be a $2,500 card or more now. Hmmm, what will it take to win the psa 8 Garcia on ebay??????

Yes-big win last night on ebay as I won the Garcia in psa 8 for just under $1,000. I believe this is the lowest pop card in 8 in the set. Was kicking myself earlier that I passed on an offer to buy the Garcia from Frank. Hopefully final 7 will not be as expensive and I can look forward to completing this baby in the first half of 2006.

Congrats on picking up the Garcia, Jim...that was the final card I needed for my set. Garcia is traditionally the most expensive common in this set, although the Hector Lopez card has been going for big bucks lately.

Always looking for 1957 Topps BB in PSA 9!
  • This Garcia card Jim just won came from a card shop in cleveland the buyer paid $20 he told me. I looked at the card before he had it graded at the recent chicago show and he knows im bulding this set (already have 2 Garcia 8's) His name i forget but he is always very nice and must be a friend of MHCC. Just thought i would share Jeff OH i think its a very nice card and fair price i offered him 800 if it made an 8 and he thought he could do better he was right

my set is ALMOST complete give or take 10 centering upgrades and having around 10 raw cards graded... THe set is about 50% 6, 45% 7, 4% 5, and 1% 8 (just about 4 8's). My 6's look like great 7's and my 7's are solid 7's. Only reason i keep the 5's is that bar none i cant find out why they are not 7's...and they are dead on centered. The Drysdale and Bunning are both 50/50 and look like great 6-7 cards in 5 holders lol. Someday when i get all my cards in psa holders and everything ready to go ill introduce my set to the registry....until then im leaving it off. I have quite a few gorgeous SGC and GAI 57's that im in turmoil about.....do i get them crossed over just to do it?? or ??? Its a tough call.....

Well, I'm WAY down the list of sets, but I've picked up about a dozen commons at less than 50% of SMR in the last week or so and snuck into 47th place image

Actually, it's a picture of the guy from the original British version of the NBC sitcom THE OFFICE.

He is the most hilarious guy out there! He co-wrote the show and the original series went for two seasons on British TV along with a finale Christmas Special. I'm not too much of a fan of British type comedy, but this show was spectacular. So much so, that I can't even watch the new series (although it's getting good reviews and all) because it is just a step under the first version. If anyone has a chance, pick up the DVDs or even just rent them.
