Gunner played pretty well for his first start ever in college. Wasn't anything special but didnt give the game away. Officiating was suspect in the first half especially refusing to call the 15 yarder when they lit up the punter. Tough spot for him the first game too with the All American Ray Guy finalist injured in the SEC championship game.
Tough spot for both teams with the terrorist attack and Parker Jones is probably going to need to walk home and will be surprising if hes still on the team

I saw the “no call” as the proper call because I viewed the collision as unintentional. Do you really want the officials determining the outcome of the game? That’s what it would have been if the targeting call had been made.
Intent has no part in the rule. It was crown of the helmet (6" radius from apex) to the helmet of a defenseless receiver. Textbook targeting.
And, by not calling it, the officials pretty much changed the outcome of the game.
Why is your opinion of EVERYTHING always contrary to what everybody else says and common sense??
Defender's facemask is practically buried into the shoulder of the receiver, and he's clearly looking down, but somehow Basebal thinks that's the part that hit the receiver's helmet.

And what about the other 2 times in the game?
Or the other ones that werent reviewed?
The refs deserve credit for being consistent on the call
Just your run of the mill tackle where a player has to be helped off the field after a helmet to helmet head-tackle while defenseless. But yeah, there might have been other missed calls in the game, so we need to be consistent and get more calls wrong. The refs really do deserve credit for being consistently inconsistent.
And what about the other 2 times in the game?
Or the other ones that werent reviewed?
I'm not sure which other two you're referring to. I only remember one and that one WAS reviewed and was correctly ruled not targeting.
That was nothing more than a tackle
I mean, sure, other than the lowering of the head and the crown of the helmet contact to the facemask of a defenseless player. Rule of thumb when tackling: see what you're tackling. The defender here couldn't - because he was looking almost completely straight down because, you know, he was hitting with the crown of his helmet. But what do I know? I only agree with the rules analyst at the game and Gene Steratore.
SEC has padded their bowl win totals with wins over Tulane and Duke. I'm sure the basebal guy will claim SEC is the best conference. He says the best players play in the SEC.

Next I want to understand why Georgia is throwing this game. They’re clearly the better team.
When a team loses its starting quarterback, the offense suffers. His replacement shows talent, but it’s his first game against a ranked team.

@coolstanley said: No conference champs in the semifinals.
That's a very good point and I'm sure the "committee" is already considering just that. After they set things up and made rules that manipulated the seeding they didn't get what they most likely hoped for.
I could think of some changes and I bet they are, too.
--- For one thing I think the conference champions should get automatic seeds, just not guaranteed 1-5.
--- I think the first round games played as "Home Games" were great but it sort of rewarded the wrong teams.
--- They sort of screwed Oregon, but that was a seeding problem which left Penn State and Notre Dame ahead of Ohio State. I think it was clear that Ohio State was better than those teams but seeding requirement pushed them down and funneled them to the top team who shouldn't have been required to play one of best remaining teams.
--- I think the biggest change needs to be 16 teams. That number works well for four rounds which is what we have now.
--- There should be more deference and an easier path to the championship for the best teams, just like in the NFL. That means 1-16, 2-15, 3-14, etc. And make those home games all the way through the semi-finals. Fans deserve that.
If the "committee" can figure out some way to rank these teams before the playoffs begin, like the AP Poll, the right teams will be included. That means 5-Conference Champions and 11 other teams. I think one of the best outcomes from this season is that it dispelled the myth that the SEC is the best conference. Anyone who would argue that in the past 15-20 years thee SEC hasn't been the best conference hasn't paid attention, they clearly were. But nothing lasts forever and the worm has turned. If the Polls focus on what is happening now instead of what a school did in the past we'll have a good group of 16 teams in the playoffs.

When PSU played OSU early this year the ref called a bogus taunting call that kept a drive going for OSU and they scored a TD. Without that BS call they would have gone to OT and who knows what would have happened.

Go PSU for it all.
I think it's going to be a close one, I'm not sold on either team having a big advantage.
@Bullsitter, that's rich!!! NIL is what's going to keep the field level and prevent all the teams in the South from paying players, y'all know that, right?? Nick Saban's already been called out and other schools have been penalized for it going back to the 1970's. It's like the NCAA football dirty little secret. This stuff is all on record and no doubt is at least partially the reasoning behind NIL. But I'm sure you know that. Along with the Transfer Portal the use of NIL will be better done by some schools, others not so well done.
Your other playoff thought bear consideration, just as mine do. That was why I posted them. In a funny way, the expanded playoff should force team to quit playing Marshall, Youngstown State and Mercer. Earlier in the thread members ranted about "strength of schedule" and "strength of record" to bolster their reasoning for/against certain teams. The expanded playoff will take care of that if the NCAA figures a better way to rank the teams.
I've been saying for years that the big boys need to have more inter-conference play during the regular season, maybe now they'll start to suffer for playing the Little Sisters of the Poor. It seems like a 10 game schedule is the norm, 7 conference and 3 non-conference. I'm for 10 conference games or 7 conference/3 non-conference D-1 against strong, competitive opponents.
If teams won't suffer and drop out of the top 16 for doing that maybe it'll happen.
--- Now to Penn State. I would caution against getting too excited about them, James Franklin can always be counted on to lose against top teams. His record is 3-17 against top 10 opponents. He already lost to Ohio State and Oregon this year. He is to the Buckeyes what Ryan Day is to Michigan!!
With that said, I expect a close competitive game, but like @perkdog I would feel safe saying who will win. I'll be pulling for the Irish just because of their history and importance to College football. Go get one for the Gipper!!
i don't know you from Adam and this is strictly sports banter. it's never personal. this is a forum where we hit the ball back over the net to each other. you come out of left field and interject with contrarian opinions ALL the time. so if you're going to sit there and put lipstick on a pig by tacitly justifying a blown call at the most inopportune time (the refs were consistent throughout the game!), then speak out of the other side of your mouth by calling a textbook targeting examplar nothing more than a tackle, are we all just supposed to sit here with our fingers tied? I personally cannot. moreover, if the roles were reversed, YOU WOULDN'T EITHER.
hope your day is going swimmingly (see? never personal.)
as for the games, ND > PSU. the Fighting Irish's D is nasty and i love their coach. and PSU's HC has a history of coming up smaller than mini-me in big games, so.....
and
either Texas is playing possum or they're fraudulent. i personally lean toward the latter. see what ND did to that backup Bulldogs QB yesterday? yeah, Texas' D didn't do that. they allowed that kid to go up and down the field on their vaunted D in the second half and win the SEC Championship. then two days ago the Sun Devils made them look like a sieve to the tune of 31 & 510. now they're all of a sudden going to play up to expectations and put the clamps on a well-oiled machine? i think not.
and on top of that, i trust Ewers about as much as i trust Jalen Milroe. he gives me a very uneasy feeling. it's never a matter of if i'll avert my eyes while watching him play, but when. imo the wrong quarterback is starting for the Longhorns, but that's a discussion for another day. if recent form means anything, this is a Buckeyes dubya.
And what about the other 2 times in the game?

Replay was officiating a game one way and should they just change it at the very end?
If the first two had been called sure theres and argument there but they were called back. The rules analysts dont even really watch games and multiple big time commenters have pointed that out

Am probably going with a ND play.
Penn State offense is better, Notre Dame defense is better. It's the old "immovable object vs. the irresistable force" scenario.
They need a cap on the NIL.
They need to work on the transfer portal.
16 teams....NO BYES.
No more Conference Championship games (ND doesn't have one). Top 2 teams in each conference get in.
AND, if they're going to change college ball to pro ball get better refs (pay 'em).
Stop the 2-minute warning. I counted 7 commercials during the last one.....7.
Also, get Shane Beamer some much needed help.
