A few 1997 (Rookie year) Gem Mint POP 1's for the Nomar collection. Score & Donruss are 1 of 13 total graded (each), SP is 1 of 16. Not a huge sample size, but well under 10% gem rates so I'm quite confident they will always be POP 1's - especially the SP foil card which also has only 3 9's.

A few recent pickups. Just missed a gorgeous (on front) 52 Bowman Mantle. Had a small amount of paper loss on back. Would have loved to pick it up. I'll post some of my PSA stuff that I got back that I stashed in the PC drawer in the near future.

wow nice SP Jeter. those corners look solid. how's the surface?

The surface is nice on that one. I'm hoping for an 8 on this one but expecting a 7. The LCS had 2 others and this was the nicest of the 3. May pick the other 2 up at some point. Can never have too many SP Jeters!

mlb is terrible at marketing the game. the playoff bracket is bad enough. but then you put ohtani vs soto in the first round? so dupid.

@rexvos Really like those Gibsons. To me the ‘68 is an iconic card because of the season he had!

  • thehallmarkthehallmark Posts: 1,332 ✭✭✭

I can't tell from scans the difference in corner sharpness on 68s. Anyone else have that problem? They all look soft to me - even on 9s and 10s.

I guess that's kind of a good problem - because 8s can appear quite gemmish.

    Awesome cards btw!

Slightly off topic, but since many here are Reggie Jackson fans I thought to bring this up. I've watched numerous Youtube videos of people reacting to watching "The Naked Gun" for the first time, and there's rarely any reaction to the Reggie cameo. His scenes are hilarious, but I guess he's simply not recognizable to most people under 30.

Love all the great pick-ups everyone has shared. Some really nice stuff.

Now to pollute the thread with my crapola. :D

Being on the hunt for more good Disco I was looking at ending record lots and found a listing titled:

Record Lot-Folk, Rock, Disco, Louis Armstrong.

Clicked on it and was described as:

Condition: Fair with obvious signs of use/wear

Additional details: Vinyl records as shown - some have scratches and scuffs, Sleeves have wear especially around the edges and corners. Records are untested and sell as is. Please make sure to view all of the photos carefully before bidding

Just to give you folks an idea of what Fair condition is in the world of record collecting it is noted as

    Poor (P), Fair (F)

Generally worth 0-5% of the Near Mint price. The record is cracked, badly warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve is water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and writing. The LP cover barely keeps the LP inside it. Inner sleeves are fully split, crinkled, and written upon.

But again, it's Goodwill and they have their own condition scale so I look at the terrible pictures that show zero detail as to what the actual vinyl looked like but I did spot something of interest that was semi hiding in the pictures. As it was from a Goodwill location and having bought/looked at vinyl in our local store (well local if you count a one hour drive to get there) I am very familiar with the quality or lack there of but the cover of the one I was interested in looked decent and threw in a bid and won at the cost of just a tad over $1.50 per album.

They arrived Friday and first thing of note was that all of the bottom right corners were all bent. This happened sometime after they took pictures because it wasn't visible in the listing but again at about $1.50 per album I could live with that even though it's frustrating.

Key to the lot (and the one that was hiding) is

Fairly clean copy with some light scuffs from a prior owner removing and placing album in the inner sleeve. Plays beautifully with no issues. Plays closely to NM but would give overall grade of VG+.

    But wait, there is more.

K-Tel Hit Machine probably the cleanest used copy I've seen in my travels and years. Vinyl on this is THICK and being typical materials K-Tel used there is a bit of surface noise but play back is pretty good with very minimal issues. I will note that this one plays a tad bit fast on some songs. VG+ with a VG cover.

K-Tel Music Express not as good shape as the above but very clean. Upper range of VG that plays much better than it looks. Again typical K-Tel surface noise and as this one is in a lower condition it does have occasional issues coming through while playing but not bad and a great addition.

Louis Armstrong - Hello, Dolly! Very clean copy. Plays with minimal issues (another VG+ maybe a tad better). In original shrink. This will replace (as far as playing it) my other copy I have.

Copy number 6 of Saturday Night Fever. Yup, I own 6 of these but all are pressed at different factories. Doesn't look the best but plays surprisingly nice with minimal noise coming through. Will need to clean it so it should play a bit better when done. Easily VG (but as I said plays better).

And the dogs in the lot (due to condition).

The Hustle Hits is a sound alike (they had MANY of these types of releases back in the day) but the artwork is hilarious. Vinyl doesn't look terrible and needs to be cleaned and then I will have an idea as to actual condition but being a sound alike I wouldn't play it anyway.

San Diego Folk Festival 74 would have been NM but a deep nasty scratch on side 1 track 1 causing needle to stick so POOR it is. In original shrink with NM cover.

Rock Is Here To Stay 3 lp set. G to VG. If people would keep albums in the paper sleeve insert then probably higher grade but only one in a sleeve. I need to clean it but it does play fine with some pops and clicks. Cover lots of shelf wear.

The Great Rock Revival 2 lp set. G to VG. Cover poor/torn to crap.

And a stray decided to come along for the ride being record 1 of The Time Life Treasury Of Christmas was included in one of the albums. Looks to be in VG+ if I bother to clean it.

So in this instance my gamble paid off. Added a couple more Disco records to the collection. A very nice condition Freddie Mercury album which I had never heard any song prior to this purchase (and it's a good album as well) and a nice upgrade of the Louis Armstrong album.

Not anything I would buy but these are cool to mess with if you had something you didn't care if you accidentally destroyed it.

Couple pickups from my local LCS run yesterday. Nothing special but couldn't pass them up. The tilt on the Bench bothers me....a lot but I just picked it up to have autographed. Might try to get another before the National.

It might be my eyes or the photo. but is the Bench miscut? Before you spend the time getting it signed make sure PSA will slab it.

Yes, you are correct. It is a miscut. I'm not looking for a grade on the card itself, just looking to have the auto auth and maybe auto grade. I assumed they would still slab it. Can't remember if that is the blue label or which one. Even if not, it's just for my PC and it was priced right, lol.
