Happy 45th Birthday to NINE time All-Star, 8 time Silver Slugger, 2004 A.L. MVP and Hall Of Famer Vlad "The Impaler" Guerrero! Ten years of 100 or more RBI, member of the 30/30 club and one HR short of 40/40 in another year! Has a .318 lifetime batting average but hit only .263 with two homers in 171 at bats. After a nice season with the Orioles in 2011, he was released and signed with Toronto and played in A ball and hit .450(!) to prove he wanted to still play and hit 500 homers but was released anyway in Triple A (hit over .300!) and retired in 2013.

He finished his career with 241 wins and a .598 winning pct.! Became GM for the Phillies in 1943 and changed their name to the Blue Jays for a couple of years! He threatened to boycott a series in which Jackie Robinson played in 1947 then the Phillies yelled at him for four games. Robinson later called it his worst days. Herb died less than a year later at age 53. A statue in Pennock's honor was denied due to his racist beliefs.

As card collectors, we all have a tiered want list. Some are for a player set, others a full set. Probably a few on the ‘if I ever hit lotto’ list. And I feel like everyone who collects cards has that card. You know, the one that seems to be able to put you in a time and place. Seeing it is a time machine; all of a sudden you close your eyes and you are taken through the space time continuum in your minds eye to a simpler time. For those of a certain age, maybe it was the card in the local card shop that you wanted most but couldn’t quite afford. You looked at nearby cards just to linger near it. You can still describe the attributes.
For me, this is that card. This one isn’t that one but it feels a lot like it with many similar traits. I loved that one and I love this one, too. Classic card.

Don Wilson was born on this day in 1945. He was an All-Star pitcher and the author of two no hitters, his first one was the first no-no ever at the Astrodome or any domed stadium or even on artificial turf and he struck out 15 Braves too! His second no hitter came the day after the Astros were no hit themselves! He almost had third no hitter in 1974 but he was pulled for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the eighth down 2-1! He died tragically along with his 5 year old son in January,1975 at age 29 from carbon monoxide poisoning under mysterious circumstances. The Astros wore his #40 on their sleeve during the 1976 season as shown in the Cedeno card.

Happy 76th Birthday Captain Sal! He was named captain of the A's in 1969 at only 25 and remained captain until he left Oakland in 1976. A four time All-Star and three time World Champion with the A's dynasty '72-'74, Sal also played every inning of every game in 1969 and led the league in games played 4 times! From 1969 thru 1973, he had the BEST total WAR in all of baseball! A player coach for the Brewers at the end of his career, he even pitched 3 innings in a 1979 game! He later became the GM for Milwaukee for most of the 1990's! His brother Chris played for nine years in the American League!

Despite making his debut in 1941, Stan Musial doesn’t get rookie cards until the Propagandas Montiel set of 1946 (which took their image from the above, see below), the 1946 Sears St. Louis Cardinals Postcard set, the 1946-49 W603 Sports Exchange series and/or the 1946-47 Sensacion Premiums set. So the 8ishx11ish premium above could be considered a rookie under a loose definition of the word.

Happy 64th Birthday to Dave Dravecky! A 1983 NL All-Star with the Padres, the lefty pitched 10 2/3 scoreless innings in the 1984 postseason for San Diego. He was traded to the Giants in a seven player deal that included Kevin Mitchell halfway through the 1987 season. The Giants went to the NLCS that year and Dravecky pitched a shutout in Game 2 and lost Game 6 1-0! He has 25 2/3 innings pitched in the postseason with a 0.35 ERA in his career! Doctors found cancer in his left arm and operated in Oct.'88. Came back early in '89 and broke his arm pitching in Montreal and had to retire. In 1989 he was awarded both the prestigious Willie Mac award and MLB's Hutch award. Lost his left arm and shoulder in 1991 due to the cancer and is now a motivational speaker. Recently inducted into the Bay Area Sports HOF.

He came in tied for second in the ROY voting along with teammate Jim Gentile who both lost to another teammate Ron Hansen, the only time that has ever happened! They were having the best season of any Oriole team, even back to the St. Louis Browns teams of the forties! They were in first place as late as Sept. 14th,1960, but ran out of steam to the Yankees. Besieged by arm trouble he was out of the MLB by age 29 but continued as a pitching coach in the majors and minors for almost thirty years!
Tallulah Bankhead — 'There have been only two geniuses in the world. Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.'
Happy 73rd Birthday Terry Crowley! Two time World Series champ and pinch hitter deluxe, he has over 100 pinch hits! His pinch 2 RBI double to win Game 3 of the '79 World Series would be more famous if the Orioles would have won the series but the Pirates won the next three games to win it all. He played for 15 years but only had 1,500 at bats! He was the first DH ever for Baltimore. Spent over 20 years as a hitting coach in the majors with Baltimore and Minnesota. He once said " Being a pinch-hitter adds four years to your career"
Great photo of Crowley ready to plow into Thurman Munson. I believe that's the ball just entering the picture on the right.

Happy 90th Birthday Roger "Humm Baby" Craig! A three time World Series champ, Roger also coached and managed in the Fall Classic as well. A very short list. Got a win in Brooklyn's first championship in 1955 as a 25 year old rookie, got another World Series win nine years later with the Cardinals in '64. In 1959 he was tied with six others for the shutouts lead and fell four outs shy of the ERA title! His ERA that year was 2.06 and the leader had a 2.83! Became a pitching coach"guru" teaching pitchers the forkball and was pitching coach in the Tigers great 1984 team. In 1987 he managed the Giants to the NLCS and in '89 to the World Series. I have to mention he went 15-46 in the first two years of the Mets franchise or he would have a winning pitching record of 59-52!
Tallulah Bankhead — 'There have been only two geniuses in the world. Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.'
Born on this day in 1915, Joe "Flash" Gordon was a NINE time All-Star, 1942 MVP, five time World Series champion and a Hall Of Famer! He also managed 4 teams! Hit .400 in the 1938 series sweep vs. the Cubs and .500 vs. the Dodgers in a 5 game series win in 1941! Played in 1000 games for the Yankees and collected 1000 hits! He led the league in strikeouts and grounded into the most double plays in 1942 while Ted Williams won the triple crown but he won the MVP anyway! The Yankees thought he was done in 1946, but with the Indians he had some of his best years and homered in the last Indians World Series championship in 1948. Then the Indians thought he was finished but he hit 43 homers and drove in 136 runs and hit .299 in Sacramento in 1951!
Tallulah Bankhead — 'There have been only two geniuses in the world. Willie Mays and Willie Shakespeare.'

After his 16yr career he became a combo GM assistant and pitching coach then became a sports agent then a GM again.

He holds the record of most hits in one year after age 40 with 207! One of six years over 200 and he had one of 199! He has 2987 hits , the most for any hitter NOT to reach 3000! He would have but he started his MLB career as a pitcher! His only win was a complete game win against the mighty A's! He also missed almost a full year due World War 1! He is remembered for great plays in the outfield during the World Series, three in one game vs. the Giants in 1924 and one controversial catch diving over the stands at full speed in 1925 vs. the Pirates which he took to his grave saying that he never lost possession. He left a letter to be opened only on his death! People say it was the greatest ever! He waited years and years to get voted in to the HOF and he showed up every year after to welcome the new inductees. He even welcomed Mickey Mantle. He died soon after.

Happy 62nd Birthday to Alan Trammell! Six time All-Star, 4 time Gold Glove, three time Silver Slugger, 1984 World Series Champ AND MVP and Hall of Famer! With the Reds he busted down Pete Rose's door in a stupor and needed 22 stitches in his head after being hit with a blackjack when he was with KC. Less than six months after his last game he was committed to a mental hospital! Then he spent 22 months in treatment, changed his life and became an addiction counselor! In 1943, former teammate Eddie Collins remembered Plank as the greatest pitcher in baseball. "Not the fastest. Not the trickiest, and not the possessor of the most stuff, but just the greatest", Collins said
326 career wins, 2.35 era, 3x W.S. champ
One of my favorite prewar cards.
2nd card/player of the day.
I find the history of baseball fascinating!
The eccentric George (Rube) Waddell.
If you have 17 minutes and love baseball history, the video below is well worth watching. Well done & entertaining
Meet Charley Paddock, an Olympic medalist at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics - 100 Meter and he was the first person to be deemed the 'fastest person alive' in modern times.
Gator and Louisiana Lightning were the two nicknames closely associated with Ron Guidry, perhaps not quite by the conception of Mr. Greenwell but certainly before he began to play baseball where such nicknames are often given.
2 cards of the day:
Paul (3,152) and his younger brother, Lloyd (2,459), hold the career record for hits by brothers (5,611).
Paul a 3x batting champ and .333 lifetime BA.
Some argue Lloyd is a solid candidate for the Hall of VG.
With his .316 BA and 2400 hits, the VC inducted him in 1967.
This one has earned a lot of WOW! compliments for centering and subject matter. Like many items on the market, these have seen some pretty hefty increases of late, too:

The year was 1996. The return of professional soccer to the United States. This unnumbered promotional card was released in advance of the 125 card collection, which enshrines the ten team, inaugural season of MLS -- now on its way to 30 teams.
Interestingly, only the rare promotional Alexi Lalas card included his correct information on the back of the card. Every Lalas card sold in the base and parallel sets are misprinted with another players bio, UD having screwed up the card of -- "The most recognizable U.S. soccer player ever"

Always liked this card, with the 1950 Bowman artwork and Wrigley Field featured in the background. Sadly, Mr. Terwilliger passed away a few weeks ago.

Gator and Louisiana Lightning were the two nicknames closely associated with Ron Guidry, perhaps not quite by the conception of Mr. Greenwell but certainly before he began to play baseball where such nicknames are often given.
As usually, the Yankee wins.

Be honest - anyone ever seen a four of this card that was this nice?
...and it’s accurately graded, for what it’s worth.

To my knowledge, the closest thing to a legitimate Jim Brown lacrosse card, albeit issued 50+ years after he left college.
I always thought the first was Lenn Sakata, but you’re right. Lum was a decade earlier and Sakata was second. Both are from Honolulu.
@1951WheatiesPremium Anyone see a 5 this nice?
Also graded correctly!
Never. That’s an absolute beauty, sir.
One of many such in your stable; I pay attention, good sir.
