<< <i>Exactly what I was thinking. When did Heritage become a "hit" product? I'm pretty happy when I open a hobby box and I need all or most of the SP's and inserts. That's a win at only $50 bucks per box.
Try out the new Museum Collection for hits. You won't be disappointed. >>
As a long time heritage collector I will answer this. First, heritage isn't 50 bucks a box, I have never bought it even close to that price and if someone is selling it for that price, then they are not making any money on it. Second, heritage used to be a hits product. There were nice autographs in it and they were 5 or 6 a case. Thirdly, Topps puts out plenty of products in the same price range that have much better hits in the product.
Keep in mind that SP's and insets, while cool to collect, cost topps nothing. Honestly this product SHOULD be 35 bucks cost, but isn't not. Topps knows they can print it and guys will buy it. If we are calling busting a box with just base cards in it and maybe one GU care a win, then topps will continue to water it down.
I'm not sure Heritage ever was a "hit" product either, as I have never got a decent "hit". But others have, and I think we all see the odds dwindeling each year as Topps keeps coming up with new ideas (new issues-MC,AG,QG,etc). I think alot of us feel since this product has been around for 11 years, that Topps ought to recoginize this fact and not send so many hits to other prodcuts. Why would a company put out a great product for 2-3 years, buld a following, just to start watering down those "hits", eventually loosing collectors of the product? I thought maybe this year Heritage production might fall, but I have changed my mind after only 3 weeks of tearing open 4 hobby boxes-30-35 blasters, a box of retail, and probably 20 jumbo packs. Thats a lot of cash (althought nothing compared to what some of you guys are ripping). This stuff is everywhere. I doubt if I recieved more than 20 chromes or 60 SP's. No Coins, no autos, no CC's, 1-2 color swaps, 4 GU, a bunch of crappy stickers, and few inserts. At this point a high number is a big "hit" for me. Where you getting this stuff for $50 a box at?

I wouldn't call it a "win"....I have never seen the allure of the GU, I didn't see where a scrap of cloth was a something to get excited about.
Would I rather have a GU of Fielder or an auto of a guy who played one year in '63, that is the choice, I know that when I buy the box.
That was a standard box of Heritage.
Are we expecting more?
If I open a hobby box of Heritage, am I to expect a Willie Mays Auto?
Then I will be disappointed.
Topps realized it couldn't increase profits by paying for HOF autos, so it invented the SSP "hype"....(starting with the Jeter card in the regular issue) and it worked (for a year or two).
I thought it was for the set collector....even that costs a lot if you try to put it together by opening packs.
As a Heritage collector since 2002, my main objective is to complete the sets, and acquire any short prints or inserts I need. I usually buy more retail only because it is more local, since I have no hobby shops in my area, and would have to buy online. I was only really comparing what I pulled from a hobby box compared from what I pulled from retail this year. We as collectors usually have the mindset that we can expect something better from Hobby than retail, especially in a Heritage product. But to place down $75 for a HOBBY box of heritage and the best pulls were a Lee image swap and a Holliday Clubhouse Collection (both going for between $3-$5 each on ebay) is kind of going against why we would buy hobby over retail in the first place. No, I am not expecting a Mays auto or a dual relic, but come on. I should have seen this coming in 2010, how the home run inserts were distributed (Ruth-Hobby, Mantle-Target, Maris-WalMart) Hobby sure didn't win that battle, did it? Or even this year, where buying retail at least you get the red and blue borders, and they seem in demand so far. I NEVER buy wax with the exception on getting any hits, I just feel really lucky if I get something like that, but I also do expect when buying HOBBY to have the best pull from the box be a little better than what I got.
They've done studies, you know. 60% of the time, it works every time.
Gotta give a big thank you to Walt for the heads up on the value box. Bought one today at WalMart and got a red Minoso auto in one of the two heritage packs.
