I have almost 1800 sets now. I'll continue to buy if the price is good, I guess.

Have the album and folder makers added these to the books? That seems like it will make them more "needed".

I've thought about submitting a bunch if only to have them in slabs denoting the composition. >>

Mintage of each of the 2009 satin finish bronze Lincolns is lower than that of the 1931-S, but many collectors don't know or care about the two distinct metallic compositions. It also doesn't help that the bronze cents were issued in mint sets only.

Many collectors limit their sets to circulation strikes, fewer collectors add standard proofs to the mix, and even fewer add off-metal collector coins such as proof silver dimes, quarters and halves. Many recent silver proof Roosevelt dimes and Kennedy Halves have some of the lowest mintages in their series, yet can be purchased near their melt value. This does not bode well for future price appreciation of the 2009 bronze satin finish Lincolns.

Time for our quarterly reunion? Good to hear from everyone again on these sleepers.

Nice analysis Overdate. The major diff is that these are Lincoln cents -- perhaps the most collected US coin. Time will yet tell, but if they become a hole in a album set, demand shall follow and they will have their place.

  • Looked in the 2012 redbook at the book store.

Still not really listed as a seperate variety. That still surprises me.
Haven' seen any album pages that include them, either.

I am starting to give up hope. I had 400 sets, but broke up 100 of them to keep the pennies and
spent the quarters and dollars on vacation in June.

Probably be dropping another 100 sets in the next 30 days. If I can't sell and get the mint price for them (27.99), I will break out the pennies
    and spend the rest.

Thought this was a sure thing. Thought once they went off sale someone would start promoting them on TV or something.
So far, no promotion, no listing, no holes in the albums.

On the good side, if they do start rising they will probably only go one way, instead of peak and drop.

Patience. Many highly collectible coins didn't mature for several years or more.

  • 2010 & 2011 Mint sets not selling well. They could come in with mintages well under 2009 levels!

Could be, but only the '09s are copper. image
2009 Mint Set Lincolns - 4 different types, satin finish, each w/original 1909 Lincoln metalic composition (95% copper)
2010 Mint Set Lincolns - 2010 satin finish zincs (the end of a 6 year satin finish run)
2011 Mint set Lincolns - 2011 business strike zincs (billions minted)

It does look like the 2013 Red Book mentions them and prices each satin finish 2009 cent at $10 each (I presume they mean the coppers from the Mint Set). At the same time they lowered the mint set price itself to $35. The 2011 Red Book had these at $42, the 2012 Red Book listed them at $40.

Thanks Ernie -- would have guessed these (coppers) would have boosted by now, but still a sleeper... I haven't checked recently what the set is selling for.

There are 8 Satin Finish bronze cents in each 2009 mint set, so does this imply a total value of $80 just for the cents in each set?

Take heart, guys. Demand is picking up. I decide to buy a couple extra sets, so I just bought a couple groups of 8 off ebay. Unfortunately for me, the coins have been seriously cherrypicked and re-inserted into the plastic laminate.

What's the final mintage, or is it not yet final?

I still have 10 sets in an unopened box and have not followed what they are doing but I am sure there will be a lot more interest in them next year because the cherry pickers guide will be listing some of the varieties in the book. This will cause a ripple effect in all the 2009 cents with the low mintages.

Nice to see this thread wake up again. I never saw a confirmation from the Mint on the mintages. It never showed in the annual report in 2010. If anyone else has a lead on how to confirm, please jump in.

Does any of the recent Redbooks list the mintage?

Is it easy to swap out the 09 Copper cents with zinc ones?
Or just buy the sealed 09 Mint sets?
Correct me if I'm wrong, all of the proofs are copper right?

I think it's possible to switch coins on sets that have been cut up in strips, I recall if they are trimmed close they do fall out. Safest bet is sealed boxes, but it's easy to just weigh them for composition proof (bronze are heavier). It's really too bad there wasn't a distinguishing mark/visual difference for ease of ID.

Yes all 2009 proofs are bronze, but only the US Mint set cent were bronze.

For purposes of this discussion, copper = bronze.image

I have a couple 2009 Mint Sets still in their sealed plastic boards, so I bought these as extras. If I were buying any more on ebay, I would insist on buying the whole 2009 Mint Set still sealed in the plastic board.

The 2009 Mint Set bronze cents are satin finish, and they can be distinguished visually from the brilliant finish found of BU zinc cents. In hand, the 2009 bronze cents are both heavier and they have a different sound when dropped on a desk top.

The 2009 Proofs are also bronze, but the Proofs from all other years are zinc. The 2009 Mint Set had a smaller mintage than did the 2009 Proof Set, so the 2009 "P" and "D" satin cents are the lowest mintages since at least 1931, possibly since 1909, even though there are 8 varieties each having the same low mintages. I just wish I knew what the actual mintages were, for the sake of posterity.

I was on ebay, am I looking t the right set? I looked on the mint web site and I believe the last price of these was 27 bucks, but they are selling on ebay for 25?
  • AkbeezAkbeez Posts: 2,697 ✭✭✭✭✭
Yeah, it's still a buyers market. High grading has occurred and the sets are being dumped below cost. If you are willing to sit on them a few years I think they will pay off. A true sleeper at that low of mintage and commem to boot.

Have the mintages on these been posted in the recent Redbooks? As jmski noted, it is very, very low...I wonder if the masses understand that?

Not sure what the original price was, but I found a few BIN's for $35-$40.

EDIT:Just stumbled on a sealed box of 50 for $1500
Just bought two sets for $54 shipping included. Ebay now makes it
easier to spend money, no more logging into PP. I would have rather
used a MO and kept the money in the sellers pocket, as he made no profit
selling these to me @ $27 each.

Redbook states 784,614 minted, I guess they mean sold.

BTW, all eight copper cents from the uncirculated sets are listed in ms65 @ $10 each.

Thanx. Even thought the Redbook has been notoriously wrong in many of their modern mintages, it still shows the approximate mintage at levels near what has been touted.
