I just think the lower mintages would command a higher price and have also been puzzled by the low price and the fact that they don't appear in any ads. Are the dealers hoarding?
To those of us who grew up mezmerized by any sub-1 million Lincoln mintage, maybe the game has changed. Maybe it's a "new paradigm" in collecting.
Or, maybe things are just too crazy these days with too many avenues in too many series with too many Mint offerings.

Too many avenues in too many series. That is why I stopped buying the annual production runs from the mint. I think that the Satin Finish was a big killer for me. I recieved the new Satin Finish in the big square footage packaging and set them back. I was done. Sold my proof sets, silver proof sets and mint sets and bought an 1877 Indian cent instead.
The only moderns I keep up with are the lincoln cents. I do not have any satin finish in my Dansco and was not going to start.

I think at least part of the reason these haven't taken off is that they've been lost in the crowd. A lot of attention lately is on bullion, and market behavior suggests coin collectors have ADHD. Six months ago it was First Spouse gold mintages, last several weeks it's been 5 oz hockey pucks. 2009 is long forgotten (just partly kidding on that). I seriously doubt the relative lack of interest has to do with dealer hoarding.
I, too, bought a fair number of '09 mint sets focusing on the copper cents and maybe the market will one day reward us for our brilliant foresight, but sometimes things just don't take off the way we expect. For the moment, we're just bagholders.
I remember buying 1996 w mint sets for the bonus "w" dime, and now almost 15(!) years later, those still haven't done much. Anticipating the argument that there's a big difference between a 1.4M mintage dime and 800k mintage cent, cent collector base is much larger, etc., I still think it's a reasonable comparison. It's possible that the larger market could end up viewing these as it seemed to view the 1996 w dime -- as a Mint gimmick -- and not really caring that much. I don't think anyone is going to lose $ on the 09 Mint sets at this level, but I think there are better opportunities out there for those looking to make a quick buck.

There's nothing wrong with a little, friendly, debate! I do agree with your opinion of the '96-W dime being a "Mint gimmick" and the $ making part. However, and mainly for the reasons you've suggested, I disagree with the comparison.
Could someone provide the graded (Pcgs) population please?
Like jmski, I wonder if the game has just changed. Made me think, too. I never even OWNED a sub-million mintage coin until I was in my thirties! That's why these seem overlooked.
I also would have thought that this set would have realized a higher price level at this time given it was the only option to pick up the copper Lincoln cent type coins. Still, we are only one year or so out from the issue and with the relatively low sales price on these from the US Mint it might be that quite a few are simply sitting in stacks awaiting broader recognition of the set.
Again checked my last two issues of NN last night--NO ONE is offering these, but plenty of offerings up through 2008. Maybe we need to get the telemarketers amped up on this. Anyone know them well enough to give 'em a call? I can just imagine the rich possibilities for a sales pitch.
You know, I also think that people just do not give a damn and may NEVER. I also thought these should have some upside potential but now am more of the belief that there really is not the collector base to sustain any kind of price rise on these.
People have disagreed on these boards but I just think we have an inverted demographic (ie fewer younger collectors, more older with the graphic looking like a pyramid upside down - like Oldsmobile demos and Buicks are now).

That was $2,500........... not $3,000 as the feller selling it received his back before mine had completed the attributer rounds. I was just "slightly" miffed. The two I sold brought a little over $500 each but were 1 point lower in grade. (68DCAM vs 69DCAM)
I haven't seen these lately. Has anybody else?
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
I still have my 2 PR 69's. I saw one about a month or so ago on ebay. I cant remember the price but it did not sell. No one is even looking at or for them at this point.
I think when the final mintage is released, there will be some ooow's and ahhh's over these. I thought that was to happen around the New Year.
When does the Mint typically release it's final audit numbers?

Lastly, is there sets that have lot numbers, dates of minting, etc which are better to have?

LP1's seem to be holding up in value with sealed (original) boxes.
Last I saw, they were going for $60-70 each. $100 for 5 sounds like a real bargain.
The box date/times didn't seem to matter, but I'm sure someone thinks they do.

A totally different subject shasta, but here's a set of LP1s ending soon. It's at $81 (for all you lazy folks). Are you sure the one's offered to you are all LP1s and not the whole set (e.g. LP1, LP2, LP3...ect.)?

The US Mint 2010 Annual Report was published on Friday 1/14. It can be seen HERE.
I could only find one reference to the 2009 Uncirculated Annual Coin sets in a chart on page 18. It Indicated there were 785,000 sets.
If this is correct, then 11,411 sets were sold in the final few days before they ended sales on June 15, 2010.
This would also verify that the 2009 COPPER uncirculated Lincoln cents are the lowest mintage non-proof cent since the 1909S VDB (484,000). Is there some symbolism here?
PLEASE correct this if I am wrong -- but it looks like these will be BIG winners!

Being a one-year type, the 2009 bronze Lincolns are also the scarcest coins in the Lincoln Cent circulation-strike type set.
A complete Lincoln Cent type set would contain:
Wheat reverse:
Bronze with VDB on reverse (1909) Bronze without VDB (1909-17) Bronze with VDB on obverse (under Lincoln's shoulder)(1918 onwards) Steel (1943) "Shell case" composition (1944-46)

I reviewed the 2009 FY report that says none of the 2009 uncirculated sets were sold in 2009 FY, which means the 2010 FY report should be the total, since they went off sale before the FY ended.
So I would have to agree with the conclusion above.
I get that these may have a "low" mintage and it's fun to compare them with the mintages of other dates, but they'll never be as "rare" as the other low mintage key date and semi-key date Lincolns. All of these new coins were issued in collectors sets and didn't enter circulation like the other real Lincoln keys. It's not that hard to imagine that most of the 700k+ mintage will remain in the collector sets and will remain in high grade forever.
<< <i>I get that these may have a "low" mintage and it's fun to compare them with the mintages of other dates, but they'll never be as "rare" as the other low mintage key date and semi-key date Lincolns. True, but demand for the other key and semi-key Lincolns arises almost entirely from collectors putting together date and mintmark sets.
Demand for the 2009-PD bronze Lincolns also arises from set collectors, but there is additional demand from Mint Set collectors and type collectors (since all 4 designs are one-year types). So this additional demand will somewhat offset the fact that all 785,000 sets are in the hands of collectors and speculators. And given the popularity of Lincoln cents among collectors, 785,000 is not such a large number.
And I think another thing that might help the 2009 mint set a little is that there are several other coins in it with lower-than normal-mintages: the nickels, dimes, quarters.
Paul Sims appears to be selling '09 Mint Sets for $33.95, which seems like a fair price to me. The '08s are $69.95! Anyone know what's going on with those?
The 08 mint set was only 745k, the lowest annual unc mint set since 1963. It took about a year for it to realize it's premium.
No real semi-keys within as I recall. 09 has several.
Refs: MCM,Fivecents,Julio,Robman,Endzone,Coiny,Agentjim007,Musky1011,holeinone1972,Tdec1000,Type2,bumanchu, Metalsman,Wondercoin,Pitboss,Tomohawk,carew4me,segoja,thebigeng,jlc_coin,mbogoman,sportsmod,dragon,tychojoe,Schmitz7,claychaser, Bullsitter, robeck, Nickpatton, jwitten, and many OTHERS
Is anyone getting these cents graded? I've been taking a set or two to each Balto. show to submit for grading. I'm told that the OGP will lead to fairly rapid toning/discoloration on these so that pristine examples may be hard to come by in the not too distant future. Slabbing and storage in IS boxes should, in the end, be worth the effort. I also like the notation on the slabs.
For may of the reasons stated, one would think that these just have to be a great issue in time.

Hey wait a minute, only 745,000 Satin Finish Lincolns in 2008? Why that's 40,000 coins lower than the 2009 Lincolns in Satin Finish! (Actually, quite a bit lower since there were 4 different versions of the Lincolns in 2009 for a total of 3,140,000 coins with the copper alloy.)
For the Type collector that is.

I have almost 1800 sets now. I'll continue to buy if the price is good, I guess.
Have the album and folder makers added these to the books? That seems like it will make them more "needed".
I've thought about submitting a bunch if only to have them in slabs denoting the composition.
I can't believe there is still not a confirmed final mintage -- the number in the OP title is still a best guess.
They are still available under $40 last I looked, awhile back. A good investment, but hard to go that way with PM's running so hard.

Satin Finish Lincoln Memorial cents are available in the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Mint Sets, so they are not scarce as a type.

But the 2005-2008 are not 95% copper, as are the 2009's.

So?
The name is LEE!
<< <i>LP1's seem to be holding up in value with sealed (original) boxes.
Last I saw, they were going for $60-70 each. $100 for 5 sounds like a real bargain.
The box date/times didn't seem to matter, but I'm sure someone thinks they do. >>
Does that imply that there are fake (non-original) boxes out there; or simply that the box is sealed and has never been opened?
<< <i>Hey Papi, glad to see you back on the boards. >>
Ah thanks. I've been watching in the background.

I've heard rumors of re-sealed boxes of LP2's out there, pre-searched for ddrs.
Opened LP1 boxes seem to be snubbed - something about a virgin box is very attractive (that's what he said).
The alleged value in the LP1 boxes is the fact that there was 100000 of them made while the others were much higher. There is no reason to
open them as there is nothing of value in them.

It is bizarre, isn't it. $70-$100 for a white box you'll never open, because the 50c worth of pennies are wrapped in fancy paper.
But 7 finger Lincolns are unintersting. Boggles me

I still have about (50) 2009 Mint Sets......I cannot believe the masses are not aware of the low mintages of the REAL COPPER coins in these....

me too
I have almost 1800 sets now. I'll continue to buy if the price is good, I guess.
Have the album and folder makers added these to the books? That seems like it will make them more "needed".
I've thought about submitting a bunch if only to have them in slabs denoting the composition.
They are still available under $40 last I looked, awhile back. A good investment, but hard to go that way with PM's running so hard.
Yeah.
<< <i>I now own about .003% of the mintage. >>
I've got 0.001% - we can corner the market yet!
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
