RWB, What's your opinion regarding this new 2009 issue? Do you consider it to be a faithful reproduction of the original, an inferior rendition, or a high quality variation? Or none of the above.
<< <i>What's your opinion regarding this new 1909 issue? >>
I think you mean 2009.

I'll wait until I see them in person. Photos can be misleading, especially when we're comparing the MMIX pieces to ones that only a hand full of collectors have seen in person. From the photos, the new piece looks impressive.
I am going to hoard these like my grandchildren will fear having them seized. I am going to hoard these at $1200 per ounce. I am going to hoard these like there is no other alternative! Nice pics!!
On a side note, I wonder if they will go to the 34 mm diameter when they do the palladium issue of these. It will be ridiculously thick if they maintain the 27 mm diameter because palladium is less denser than gold. Also, I believe that palladium is harder than 9999 gold so they may have some issues as well on striking the palladium planchet to obtain the UHR details.

I was going to get the next two presidential gold and go for the short set,now thats put on the back burner.gotta save up and get this one instead. great coin!
One of the two original small diameter EHR $20 was on display at the San Francisco ANA. I think many people had a chance to see it then, if not actually hold it. I do agree with RWB's assesment that I looked too think for its size.
I don't really care how faithful the rendition is. I WANT ONE!

<<i'm not really an element collector in the sense i'm going for the full 92>>
Now that is an idea. It would be cool to collect some elements. Once you have a type set (is there any other kind?) you can move on to the molecules (a never ending project?)....

Last I checked it will be minted to demand for 2009 only. So this will be really cool to own but chances of a bread winner are slim.
Great looking coin...but anyone else think the mint is two years too late?

Better late than never. I really hate the low relief version on our $50 bullion. I really love the UHR version. It's amazing how when its done like it was supposed to be how much better it looks.
My belief is that America needs to stop recycling past designs - ASEs, AGEs, the Gold Buffalos - to me they all represent lost opportunities for the furthering of U.S. coin design.
With that disclaimer out of the way, I must confess the happiness I feel with respect to owning one of these next January!

Oh I don't know - they made 10,000 of the original high relief Saints which does not make them rare, plus most were saved - today they are easily obtainable - to anyone with $30,000 or more.

I heard after palladium they are moving on to depleted uranium.
To me the 2009 looks like it has a little less detail. The overall design is sharp, but the subtle details such as in the fabric of Liberty's dress and the leaves by the date seemed to have been smoothed over.
I predict these HR Saints will be very popular and the mint will sell several hundred thousand of them resulting in them becoming essentially bullion coins in the after maket worth only a very small premium over melt. Buy one because they are neat and unusual but don't load up on them because they won't be a good investment.

As much as I'm looking forward to these, I must admit that I'm concerned about the dirty brown stain on them. There even seems to be some on this display coin, see the typical high points, stomach and right thigh.
Why can't the Mint get the rinse procedure right?
Maybe I'm expecting too much?
I'm still buying regardless! Not many though, old gold still calls.
<< <i>From what I can see, this is a surprisingly nice reissue, but I do have some problems with it. The detail is much crisper than the original, possibly as a result of the new technology. However, I wonder if St. Gaudens purposely sculpted the original relief with a more subtle touch. Perhaps his original pattern casts would shed some light on the subject. The modern mint loves to "strengthen" detail on coins, so I am skeptical. Despite my criticism, it's still a handsome reproduction. >>
I think the new Saint is beautiful. The mint has done a great job of giving us a chance to own a true piece of art. If they had not enhanced the sculpture, people would have complained about that also. Kudos to the mint for offering this to us. (I also defend the mint for creating so much coinage recently. It encourages us to choose what interests us and not hoard all they make.)
<< <i>Couldn't they have prettied up that face of hers, though? I mean, she looks like they sat something heavy on her face. >>
Actually, that is one of the positive traits with regard to this reissue. As a true artist, St. Gaudens understood the bold, blocky Greco-Roman style, which is clearly what he wanted to achieve with his coin designs. If he "feminized" the face, like the mint attempted to do with the hideous gold bullion coins, this current project would have been a complete disaster.
<< <i>Are the new images distorted? They don't look like the original coin. >>
They are angled. That is adding the distortion. If it were a straight on shot they would look a lot closer. That and the metal does not have the copper content to it won't look aged after a hundred years.
Eric Jones came across some information a while ago that indicated mintages limited to 25,000 for the proofs and unlimited to the uncirculated designs of this coin.
It will be interesting to watch!

Matte proof, or regular proof? Matte proof would be really cool, I think.
"1907 proof" ? The EHR $20s are all called proofs, but there is no record of any "proofs" of the high relief variety. All HR were made exactly the same way.

<< <i>I'm curious...how thick are these new coins going to be exactly? Will they fit in a PCGS slab?
-Paul >>
The original UHR(s) fit in PCGS slabs, so I don't know why this one wouldn't.
The more I look at the photos, the more I want one. Gonna have to put the coin buying on halt for a while to stomach this purchase!
Anyone know when they are due out?

So like....... what is it? A coin or an ashtray?
Or a doulbe edge lettering 09 Saint?
Cool specimen, I'm in for one.

Of course, this coin, like $10 fractional gold buffalo which I also am partial to, are both copies of pre-existing designs.
Get rid of the uninspired First Spouse Golds and Presidential Dollars, and give us reasonable limited mintage issues of these beauties instead.
now where's that finger emoticon?
