I believe US Mint will strike a first batch of 5,000 coins and next batch when first batch is sold out. Once orders are maxing out, the Mint will stop. My guess is we will see a mintage of between 40,000 to 100,000.

I agree. Also, gold's likely to make a power move to the upside in 2009, which will price more people out later in the year and make it even more difficult to aquire blanks. This will be one of those issues if you want one get in early. That said I haven't decided if I want one yet.
so at that thickness and that purity -the thing has a diameter a little bit bigger then a quarter ! far from being an exact replica of the orig. 20$ gold piece

The coin should be the size of a $10.00 gold piece and twice as thick, just like the original St. Gaudens Pattern.

Based on the USM's desire to go forward and still release these in Jan 09,
my opinion is that they will "order" limit these to a "household limit" of ONE COIN
it makes sense since the demand will be enormous initially, and inventory wont support that demand, but eventually these will be minted to demand and the inital secondary - FIRST KID ON THE BLOCK PRICING - will deteriorate.
the only problem with waiting on buying is the issue with re-pricing. If you are in the "school" of higher gold prices in 2009, you might get burned waiting.
IMO, get your allotment early. Dealers already seem to be braced for a vibrant secondary market.
"You are pre buying a 2009 ULTRA HIGH RELIEF DOUBLE EAGLE, This is a 24-karat gold (.999 fine) gold coin it will come in a Nice red oak box. Items will be shiped to you as soon as they are Available. This coin is Personified by a statuesque woman striding powerfully forward. Liberty is leading the way with a torch in her front hand and an olive branch in the back hand. The United States Capitol dome is also depicted in the background. A young eagle flying during a sunrise is depicted on the reverse. The motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is on the edge of the coin, allowing a cleaner design on the obverse and reverse. Please look at pic of item you will rec and thank you."

PS. My one coin allotted UHR will be most welcomed in less than 48 hours!!!!!
I realize this will be unc, but with the gold eagles the finish has slight changed from a semi-shinny strike to a somewhat matte finish around 1994 or so. Anyone seen the example in Baltimore know if this will have the semi-shinny or somewhat matte finish?
If the Mint's Web site doesn't melt down tomorrow at noon ET, I'll be surprised..
Did yawl check out the .pdfs they posted (there's a link on that page) about how they'll re-evaluate Gold and Platinum coin pricing weekly based on spot prices?.. So.. to buy or not to buy.. to wait or not to wait..
Too bad Gold's not at $500.00/oz.. and lucky it's not at $1200.00/oz..
Anyway.. $1189.00, limit one, limit might go away later.. possible six to nine month delay in shipping, well.. you folks can read it yerselves..
So.. with Gold at $850.00/oz, yer lookin at a $350.00 premium for this gorgeous tiny cereal bowl.. err.. coin.. err.. whatever it is.. in a reeeeeeeeeeeally fancy box with a book.. tiny book that fits in the box?.. doesn't say..

"Gorgeous tiny cereal bowl"....you are a writer aren't you!!!!
Meltdown at the Mint high noon!!!!....I love it!!!!
I read through this entire thread a few hours ago.. starting back in July when everyone was asking questions that have, now, all been answered.. how much, how many, what limit, what price.. yadda yadda.. geeze.. i still don't know what to do.. I WANT that coin.. it's just pure sex, but it's NOT a casual purchase for me.. and it's also not a 100% true reproduction of the original..
No, it's not a botched attempt at a copy like the Buffalo DollEr was to the Buffalo Nickel.. (it only took a buncha years later for them to get it right with the Buffalo Golds..).. but the original UHRs didn't have IGWT on them, they didn't have those seams on the rim between the edge-lettering, did they?.. the number of stars has changed.. and okay, I can live with 2009 in Roman Numerals instead of 1907, but why wasn't this thing made in 2007?.. now we celebrate the 102rd anniversary of something!?.. Why couldn't they just replicate the original without changing stuff!..
Lookit all the Presidential bucks that they were spewing out with edge lettering errors.. and not just one kind of error but all kinds of errors.. so many that the Congresscritters legislated the mottos back onto the coins' faces.. it was like the Mint forgot how to edge-letter coins, because they hadn't done it for so long..
If any of these UHRs get Minted with botched up or missing edge-lettering, or double-struck / over-lapped.. well one would think that they'd take a lot more care with valuable, soft, "hand-made" coins like these than the worthless base-metal bucks they produce on high-speed presses and fly off conveyor belts into bins and go through counting machines and get bagged or rolled and never get inspected by anyone..
With a $1200.00 24kt Gold coin made in much smaller numbers, struck twice at 65 tons on a medal press, and put into capsules, into an uber-fancy box, one could rightly assume every single one is gonna get scrutinized, and any with edge-lettering errors are gonna fly right back into the melting pot and not escape the building, eh?..
Then again, one might assume that someone would notice they used the wrong reverse dies FIFTEEN TIMES IN ONE DAY on 46,318 Burnished ASEs.. one would be wrong..
People who pay $1189.00 tomorow are gonna be kickin' themselves if Gold plummets and the coin is $800.00 or less in x months.. or be laughing their butts off if Gold skyrockets, and the coin is $1500.00 in x months.. what to do .. what to do.. sigh.. if I knew they were gonna set a price and leave it there, like they always used to do, it'd be an easy decision.. with a volatile precious metals market, and not an unlimited budget for a luxury like this.. I sit before you wracked with indecision.. I don't need it, I can't afford it.. but I want it.. is there any coin collector or lover of things of beauty who wouldn't?.. To me, its way more than just an ounce of 24kt Gold.. it's art.. the question is, at $1189.00, is it a wise purchase?.. I just don't know..
As far as getting it slabbed.. yeah, if they shipped it in a manila envelope, sure, get it slabbed.. but nothing seems sillier to me than to end up with a upscale, ooh la la lacquered mahogany box with an empty capsule in it.. kinda like a Porsche with no engine in it.. if I decide to pull the trigger, I'll probably keep it in the OGP.. too bad the Mint can't give ya a second insert to house it in its snazzy display box AFTER it's in a slab.. and if I was running the Mint, that's what I'd do.. for $1200.00, they outta ship it to your door overnight for free.. oh wait.. they do.. heh..

300 thousand planchets is alot of planchets. Some years, the mint doesn't sell that many 1 ounce eagles.
But this year, it's probably safe to say that they will sell more than 300k. Who knows, the total demand might be five to ten times this number.
I'll be on the website very close to the open, with a credit card that won't expire during the shipping delay.
If they project long shipping delays, then it is important to respect their request to use a credit card that does not expire during the backorder period. Otherwise back to the end of the line you go. Fascinating marketing spin.
I wonder what will actually happen. Will anyone on CU get sleep tonight for fear of missing the opening?
I don't think that planchets are going to be the problem with this coin. I think the actual problem will be the dies, each coin will require multiple strikes which equal more stress, not just on the dies body, but on the surfaces too, so they will require more down-time for sand-blasting to keep the surfaces nice. You'd have to pull both dies at once to keep the matte even. In-addition, the collar should be fun too. I'll bet they'll have so much metal squishing-out that they'll have trouble keeping the weight at spec. There will be a 50% death rate on these. I feel for the coiner; these are going to be a pain. (good-luck buying one... see you all at noon!) :-)

Because to Err is Human. I specialize in Errors, Minting, Counterfeit Detection & Grading. Computer-aided grading, counterfeit detection, recognition and imaging.
I have to allow them "In God We Trust" since it's mandated by law now. After what happened with the presidential dollars, they couldn't have gotten away with omitting it even if it's what we collectors would prefer.
I would guess the originals used the segmented collar, there doesn't seem to be another way to do it. The presidential dollars are rolled over a track that imprints the lettering which is why some escaped without it. The segmented collar is part of the striking process and as a result it should be "impossible" for these to skip the lettering step.
The main reason they didn't get it done in 2007 is because the legislation wasn't passed. It could be that they needed to do some research, but it still could have been done a couple years ago.

As far as getting it slabbed.. yeah, if they shipped it in a manila envelope, sure, get it slabbed.. but nothing seems sillier to me than to end up with a upscale, ooh la la lacquered mahogany box with an empty capsule in it.. kinda like a Porsche with no engine in it.. if I decide to pull the trigger, I'll probably keep it in the OGP.. too bad the Mint can't give ya a second insert to house it in its snazzy display box AFTER it's in a slab.. and if I was running the Mint, that's what I'd do.. for $1200.00, they outta ship it to your door overnight for free.. oh wait.. they do.. heh..
