Actually, it looks to me like the Mick swung and missed. The catcher's bare hand is covering up his glove, something he'd only do if the ball was in the glove. Dontcha think?

I was thinking the same thing. It doesn't really have the appearance of a hit -- judging from everyone's positions or where they're looking.

I've always had the same thoughts you guys do...It looks like he actually missed, looks like Bob Gibson pitching, etc. etc.
Here's what the back of the card says..."Mickey Mantle connected with the first pitch thrown to him by relief pitcher Barney Shultz in the last of the ninth and sent the Cardinals down in defeat, 2-1. The home run, Mantle's 16th in World Series play, established a new record previously held by Babe Ruth."
-So it definitely was a hit (since he only got once pitch). -It was Barney Shultz, not Bob Gibson. Bob Gibson didn't even pitch in this game (but I always thought it was Bob Gibson until today - it looks just like him from what you can see) -This homer broke Babe Ruth's WS HR record
To me, though, it still doesn't look like he connected with the ball in this picture. And the pitcher STILL looks like Bob Gibson to me. So I did a little research and tried to find some Barney Shultz cards. Here's what I came up with:
My guess is Topps put a different pic than the homer on this card. Here's why:
1.Barney Shultz is white (I doubt there was more than one "Barney Shultz" pitching in the 60's), but the pitcher on the card is obviously not white 2.Mantle's expression doesn't look like he got a good piece of the ball 3.The catcher has his hand over the glove - a reaction that only comes when the ball actually lands there 4.No one - not even those in the stands - are looking at a "long fly ball..."
Anyone else know about this? This is my first time really looking at it in such detail...

The '65 Mantle W.S. was my first "real" Mantle as well. You guys have it covered, that is Gibson in the pic, Topps used wrong photo. Pretty cool card all the same. Heres' the box score:

Mike, I was thinking of resubmitting it, but there's a little "rubber band" ding on it. So small you can't see it in a scan.
Missed out last night on a couple other 59's last night, Aaron and Banks. Maybe that's OK, I'm finding that a high end 7 that just has minor corner touches but everything else is good is fine with me but it's hard to tell with some scans. I'll probably stick with 8's going forward. Not much can go wrong there.

I already have the '56 & '57 in PSA 8, so that makes it all PSA 8s in the 1950's cards for him aside from the rookie. The 7s end up going for $40 to $50, but I always end up getting outbid. And 8s go for $300-600 depending on the auction house or bidders.

I just got this back from my own PSA submission. I couldn't be happier! The French Bauer Reds are a tough regional issue and it is Rose's rookie year. A 9 is better than I could have hoped for even though I new it was nice.
I don't have scans and in all reality scanning it would be kind of odd, but today on E-Bay I picked up a 2001 Topps Traded Complete Set for only $118! With the price I've seen this set going for lately, I think this is a steal!
I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

The lids were the top of candy tub. Here's an old ebay auction that still has an image:

I believe it was actually gum, in there. But don't quote me. So you had to pull the lid off, hence the damn crease on the tabs.

Plus, it looks like they whited-out the number on the pitcher's jersey.
Topps must've realized their error and tried to cover it up by erasing the jersey number and/or name across the back...

Parker Brothers - Double Game Board - you can play FB, BB and checkers.
It's in great shape - probably from around 1950 - the original is from 1926 - have never seen it.
The inside is pristine! May never have been played - tho shows typic aging - but the board is beautiful!
