    Thank you, Dan.

Today I broke the "30" level. After I bought a Jim Norris PSA 9, it leaves me with 29 PSA 8's to upgrade in my set. But seeing what the Ron Blomberg PSA 9 sold for last week ($175+), I feel a bit overwhelmed. Completion seems unlikely, for a long, long time.

You guys who finished this set prior to last year were very smart, indeed. The competition level is off the charts all of a sudden.

But, that bodes well for us all, does it not?

    Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and have been lurking for a period of time following this thread. I just wanted you all to know that I have about 280 different 78 PSA 9 NQ's that I am going to be in the process of selling. I do not have any of the notorious low pop ones, but perhaps I could fill a few holes if you are shooting for a set of 9's.

I have done private transactions in the past with rbdjr (Bob) and mefer (Matt).

If you would like a listing of the cards, please PM me (I checked the box to allow them so it should work OK). I would be happy to send you my list.

I sure hope no one is offended that my first post is spam of sorts.

To help you know me better, I am the person who bought Bill's (WAW) awesome 78 set. So you know upfront, I don't feel comfortable telling others what I paid for it so unless Bill wants others to know I think I'll keep that private. I am still amazed at those of you who are so dedicated to building a set from scratch. It truly is very time consuming, expensive and difficult.

I also have interest in the 86 T FB set and George Brett Master set both of which I've got a start on but haven't to this point listed anything yet on the registry.

Anyhow, hope I can help someone fill some holes in their collection. Thanks for listening and I hope to continue to follow this thread.

Jonnyc - So you are the one with the 4th Jackson Todd PSA 9 card. I was wondering where that ended up. That was also a very nice set. Congrats.

SOM - As for the prices of late I was also very surprised as to some of the bids on Sunday. Next time I have some cards up they will end on Sunday.

Bri - I have a Rivers with a 9 front but a ? back, cut right on the bule line of the play ball game, I will probably send it in next time just to see, all the Rivers I got seem to be cut this way is that you experience with this card as well?

I will keep you all in mind if I grap another box from BBC Exchange, Thinking about 1 Wax and 1 Cello box and pull the best pack out for grading. We will see....

    You got that right, George.

sinibob Mike: (if you're lurking...) I'll bet you were shellshocked when you found out you lost the Blomberg 9 after the max bid you put in. My god...

    Way to go, Frank Smith.

Nick, I tend to think the action on the Blomberg was a isolated "incident"? BUT, there has been alot of LOW LEVEL action lately with our 78's .....

Just a general question I suppose, but how long did it take some of you to come up with a complete or nearly complete set? My 86 T FB set is about 75% completed but has taken over 18 months to assemble it in 9's and a few 10's. That set is only half the size of the larger baseball sets of the late 70's so I can only imagine how long it might take.

I still have around 170 78 T PSA 9's NQ left for sale. If anyone else would like to take a peek at the list, send me a PM. Really would like to do most of these outside of ebay if possible. Thanks!

    Hey Guys--

I am looking to finish out my 1978 Topps A's team set in 9 or better. Here is my set:

    A's Team Set

If you have cards I need, please drop me a note. I have some extra 9s of various 78s I can trade (would prefer to do that) but would also be interested in buying. Thanks!

What do you guys think about unopened 1978 Topps Baseball Boxes? Could anyone please share their experiences with opening these boxes? What's better, wax or cello? Which box contains more cards? In cello packs, does the gum ruin one or two cards? I'm guessing that in wax packs the top card has gum stains and the back card has wax stains. Can you tell me how many cards are in wax and cello boxes? I understand that wax boxes have 36 packs and cello boxes have 24 packs, but I have no clue as to how many cards are in each pack. It also seems like the top and bottom cards in cello packs would have damaged corners since those packs are sealed so tightly.

I apologize for all of these questions, but I'm in the market for some unopened packs & boxes from the '70s, and 1978 Topps seems to be perfect for my interests and budget. I've spent a long time reading all of your very interesting posts in this thread, and I figured this would be the perfect place for these questions. Thank you all for the interesting read, and for your time.

In my experiance 2 cards out of the wax packs were not worth keeping. The gum was stuck to one of the cards and the jucice from the gum had blead into the card on about half the packs. I only had a few packs were that did not happen and the gum card was fine (about 15 of the 72 packs). I also ended up throwing away the wax stain cards as well. I did not get any stars so the decision was easy to pitch them. Most of these wax packs had between 15 and 18 cards.

I do not have any experiance with the cello's and was wondering the same thing as I may grap a box of each to have at least 1 pack graded. anyone else have any thoughs on the cello?

I recently bought a pretty fresh looking 1978 Topps wax box which I'm going to crack open tomorrow. I'll let you all know what I get. My plans are to have as many graded as I can (conditions permitting), commons included. Thank you for your reply!

I participated in the most recent pack rip and I pulled a Murray from my 78 pack. I sent the card to PSA for grading a few days ago and I have a question that I should have asked before I sent it off. The card is centered nicely, however the red stripe is kind of orange in one area.

I have noticed this on a few 78's and I was wondering how much this will effect the grade? I am posting a scan of the card for you to look at. My scanner gives the card a somewhat washed out look, but the card has very vibrant colors. Anyway here is a scan of the card:

    Bunker,

GREAT centering on that Murray. I pulled one from a rack case that was killer and it graded out a 9. Here is the scan ....
Pulled 4 more JUST LIKE it centering wise but those had a nasty bird crap looking splotch on each card.

I see the discolored areas in the border you are talking about. I think you have a good shot at a PSA 9 even with those print problems. You know how it goes ..... one grader might LOVE the card for centering and corners and overlook the blotchy border and the next might bang you for it.

Baseball Card exchange has what I think are awesome boxes for $575 per. I had very very nice results but have not bought them in quite some time. I have no idea if Steve is pulling them from the same case lot as the ones I had. Stay away from cello IMO. Just too much can go wrong with those packs whether they are unopened boxes or cases. (Have not seen a unopened cello case). Usually the cello was wrapped just tight enough to hurt many corners in each pack.

    Good Luck!

Do you think we could get enough people to buy a case from Steve at BBCE? He has one and the price is $9600, but I have heard that we may get a 10% discount if we purchase it.

If anyone has noticed, there ar 15 active sets over 70% (including mine image)

That's pretty good for a late 70s set. Maybe it is time for a case break.

I am interested in a case split, I have never participated in one before, but I would be up for a box or two.

Do you guys think it would be worth doing a poll to see if there is enough interest buying a case? I think someone is trying to get together a basketball rip now so maybe we should wait? What are your thoghts?

I just figured some rough numbers and it would look something like this: (This does not include shipping/Paypal fees)

1 Lot would equal 9 packs

We would have to sell 64 lots

    9 packs = $150 (1 Lot)

    18 packs = $300 (2 Lots)

    27 packs = $450 (3 Lots)

    36 packs = $600 (box) (4 Lots)

I also know from the past that Steve from BBCE has offered discounts up to 10% off. If this would qualify for the discount the breakdown would look like this: (This does not include shipping/Paypal fees)

1 Lot would equal 9 packs

We would have to sell 64 lots

    9 packs = $135 (1 Lot)

    18 packs = $270 (2 Lots)

    27 packs = $405 (3 Lots)

    36 packs = $540 (box) (4 Lots)

I would want a full unopened box image It would be interesting to see how much each box would come under Steve's $575 price tag on single boxes.

I would be in for a box if we could get it done under the $575. I purchased 2 boxes off him earlier, they must have come from a case he open because they were perfect. If we don't get enough people for a full case but enough to get some kind of discout I would take the boxes he has opened their just great. I am going away next week so mark me down for one if you start taking orders.

    Thanks,
    George

Ahhh...you guys are too early for me on this one. It it were May, I'd be there. If you dont get it together soon, and its about May, I might hit for a box myself.

This is my absolute favorite set because it's when I first bought packs as a kid. I LOVE these!

In case you missed it there is an official sign up thread for the 78 case that BBCE has. We need to sell a total of 64 lots. BTW a lot will consist of 9 packs. Here is a link to the sign up thread:
