I don't think so. Not this time....I hated trading that thing away.

That deal way back then was way too sweet not to take. Ended up getting me probably half of those darn low pop commons that everyone needed.

I think I ended up getting about $280 or $285 for the Cepeda. Whats funny is I started the bidding at $100 but I had a buy it now of $260 with free insured shipping. The winner ended up paying about $35 more than he had to once you factor in shipping and insurance.

    Jason -

I'll bet the winner didn't place the first bid, so he probably never saw the Buy-It-Now option. If he was the first bidder, he made a mistake by thinking he could et it for less than $280.

PM me if any of the PSA 9's you bought from EOMINT are for sale... I need about 10 of them.

Inspired by the posts on this topic I have started the long journey of trying to complete this set in PSA 7 or better.
Entering my simple collection of 13 graded 72's I have zoomed up the registry to #81 and have an amazing 1.65%
of the set completed. I have some 72's at Newport Beach now being graded under the November special.

For those at the top of the registry, consider yourselves very safe. But for #80 through #50, beware the Piman.

The 72 set marked the beginning of high school for me and the approaching end of collecting cards as a teenager.
Most of the cards that I use for my registry will be from my collection as a teenager. Holes will be filled and cards
graded as my meager funds will allow. I hope to complete this project before I retire in 13 years.

Piman, Mike is right on the money. Should go for the 8's. I just picked up HOF Frank Robinson for $9.99 yesterday.

    Welcome aboard Piman!

You can end up picking up many commons and minor stars in PSA 8 for less than $10. So, don't limit yourself to 7s. But, with the star cards and low pop common players, I could see going with 7s and then maybe upgrading down the line sometime.

Good luck with your quest and keep us updated!

Piman> Seriously, 4SC has a boatload of 72T PSA8s up with opening bids of $5 each. Why not throw in a ton of $5 bids and see how many you win for that?

And now that I look at it, there are a lot of 72T up right now with Buy-It-Now @ $6 each.

If you follow 4SC's selling practices carefully, you'll see that most of the 1972 Topps PSA 8s (and indeed other cards) with BINs at $6 were previously unsold at a $5 opening bid. They also sometimes put the unsold at $5 cards up for a $4 BIN - I have picked up a couple dozen '72 Topps PSA 8 cards from them (with a large number of 5th series commons included) at $4 each plus shipping.

BTW, is it just me, or does the Tim Cullen card often have ugly print marks on the upper left side? [I have 2 PSA 8s, both of which look so bad IMO that I'm not registering either.]

Good luck on your set.......patience will allow you to put together the set at a decent price......You may have to bid on the same card 6 times but eventually you will get it at your price.

The Cash was a tough one for me to come up with in PSA 9 for the longest time. When I retired my 72 set, I was down to 8 PSA 8's left. I believe that the Cash was one of the last 6 PSA 9's that I upgraded after 6 years - so keep at it! You'll eventually find the right combination of patience and money!

    Thanks, Jami!

Two tough upgrades to go. I've tried to be conservative in my bidding over the years, but I think I'm gonna have to bid really high to get the Expos Team and the Aaron IA in PSA 8 NQ. I will though, because I really want to finish this one.

Thanks to fellow board members Jason and Dwayne who were cool enough to trade me the Foli IA and the McRae IA!image

My goal now is to buy enough PSA 9 commons to get to 8.50!

One other question, can you help in identifying some of the cards that are hard to find from this set....the set I pulled the four cards from may have some help for those striving to complete this set.....they are not all nm-mt, for example the Fisk was a mess and the Mays card came back 7OC but there may be something there....al.

Al, the regular Rose and the Clemente should be around $60 to $100 depending on who's bidding. Last Clemente went for just over $100 (Clemente PSA 8) and another went for $92 (Clemente PSA 8). But, another one ended at $54 (PSA 8 Clemente). As far as the Yaz, one went for $26 BIN (Yaz PSA 8), so it's somewhere in the $20-30 neighborhood for that one.

There are lots of tough low pop cards out there. But, look for the ones that I need first! image

    Al,

There are alot of tough cards in the set..........if you have access to the pop report figure any card with a pop in PSA 8 of 35 or under is tough....also any card in PSA 9 or better with a pop of 10 or less is tough.

If you do not have access to the pop report then go to Arny's set in the set registry....since most of his card are PSA 8 you will be able to figure out the populations there.

That Rose IA in PSA 9 should bring you a nice penny!!

My grades from the November special just posted. Pretty nice overall. Pulled 8s on some of the tougher cards like McRae IA, Dietz IA, Harmon, Henderson, Houk, Marichal IA, and Grote. A little disappointed in the Henderson and the McRae IA. I was expecting 9s on those two. Sub #605582 zip 71251 if you want to check it out.

Most of them are from that vending lot, Frank. For those who don't know, I was lucky enough to buy an 800 count box of '72 commons for $150 from a local dealer. A guy came in the shop with an album full of '72 stars and the box full of commons. He said he'd had them since 1972 when he bought 2 vending boxes. The commons spanned the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th series. I havent had time to thouroughly check all the cards, but based on the shape of the few I pulled for the special, the results are promising.image

I went back thru the cards I had from this year to see if I could assist anyone but discovered why this appears to be a challenging set. Many OC cards, fuzzy photos, some miscuts....you guys sure must have spent some great amounts of time and effort to put together your sets....makes me jealousimageof course in a good way!!
