I have a number of ungraded complete sets right now. Did you get the most recent SMR magazine. I have a small golf article in there that I sent in to try and get published some time back, and they did! It covers some of the tougher pre war sets with a real brief overview.

The best way to pick up cards is quite honestly through some of the other collectors on this message board and the PSA registries, eBay, or overseas auction houses. You don't see many items in the US auction houses, at least not yet.

Let me know if you have any questions, as many here will tell you, I am always excited to discuss golf cards!

  • Dave, Didn't someone say that the 1927 Churchmans small set was the Holy Grail of golf cards comparable to the 1952 Topps Baseball set???, Ron

Yes that someone would be me, of course my set registry write up was well before I ever owned a nice set of COPES. Guess I better go change that. Thanks for the sublte reminder Ron. Hope to see you at the National.

  • Dave , If that's the case, let's call the COPEs set "The Holy Grail", and we can call the 1927 Chuchmans set "The Unholy Grail". Ron

Yes but I still love the 27 small set. It is a beauty, and yours is nicer than mine!!!! Wonder who bought the one off the Mastro Auction???? I bid earlier, but it got outta my price range.

Could you send me an email gstarling @ gmail . com with any 31 large that may be for sell and/or help advice. I'd hate to clutter your thread with useless newbie stuff like what are the overseas auction houses, typical prices, etc. thanks again.

Just received these grades on 71 more 1900 Copes. I will be able to upgrade 6 cards in my set and finally upgrade the pesky #9 Andrew Lang card from a PSA 2. It also means I will have a complete 2nd graded Copes set to sell to some lucky person. Hope to see others post some recent grades here soon. It has been slow on this board for quite awhile! Enjoy!

The gentleman who has one of the most impressive Bobby Jones collections you will ever want to see asked me to post this on his behalf. Please contact him if interested.

    Thanks!

I have a completely ungraded 1927 Churchman small golf set (50 cards) that I will be offering for sale. If interested please email me at mcdobrynio@yahoo.com. I was planning to have PSA grade some cards and then list on eBay. For the right offer I will sell the set raw to any of the collectors here that are interested so please make me your best offer. 11 of the cards in my opinion have legitimate shots at a PSA 8 grade and maybe some others but I prefer to be conservative. The potential 8s are #5, 6, 12, 18, 20, 23, 25, 36, 37, 39, and 42. The balance of the set is EX, EX-MT and NM so call it an EX-MT set on average. #27 is VG-EX (small crease) and #28 is EX-MT. #13 (solid and a maybe), 14 (solid), 33 (solid and a maybe), 45, 47 and 50 are NMs. #46 has pen marks. #1 is EX-MT. Many thanks, Mike

    Hey all

Sorry to spam some auctions, but I listed a few cards with this upcoming auction site.

    www.greenjacketauctions.com

It is strictly golf stuff so I thought I would give it a try. They do have some other golf cards as well. With some churchmans and copes.

That's my Morris PSa 6 mk and Jones and vardon cards all in the same group. The people running the auctions said they would be advertising in an upcoming SMR. Hope to see it happen. Anyway....

Just a heads up....thanks for looking.

Well No activity from the golf gang for awhile so thought I would list a post.

Listed a bunch of 1900 graded Copes tonight, only 3 sold. The Old Tom Morris in PSA 5 did bring over $1100 however. That is about 2X SMR in PSA 5

Visiting my parents house this last weekend, the topic of collectables came up, it often does when I am around. After a while, my Mom came out from my old room (25 years ago) and handed me the four At&T Gallery passes from 1996 & 1999. The first two have very easy to read signatures, Arnold Palmer, Phil Mickelson & Fred Couples.

The second is when I need some help. I think the red 1996 Pass is Fuzzy Zeoller but have no idea who the purple 1999 pass my be.

Still, what a great thing to have after 7 and 10 years.

As for the autographs. I have an extensive collection and matched these with mine

The February 4, 1999 autographs are Phil Mickelson adn Fred Couples

I am almost positive the 1996 badge is Paul Azinger

I will work on getting the 1999 pass done as well - I am almost positive it is Kevin Sutherland. I have a US open poster with his signature. Kevin Sutherland is notorious for his bad signature.

    Hope this helps
  • 262Runner262Runner Posts: 606 ✭✭✭
    California,

Thanks for the information. That makes sense about the Azinger... And I agree, that could be Sutherland, but I have nothing to compare it to.

Not much activity on here, although a lot has happened on ebay and elsewhere recently

PSa 9 1927 TOm Morris and Bobby Jones have surfaced
PSA 6 Old Tom Morris 1900 Copes sold for almost $2000
Many many complete raw sets showing up on ebay

Anyone else come across any new material out there?

I was thinking about starting a small golf set. Any thoughts on what to start??? I would want something that presents well in mid-grade without breaking the bank. Anyone dumping a partial or raw set???

I have been entertaining the thought of selling my 1981 & 1982 Donruss golf sets. I have contacted green jacket auctions, but not sure if that's the way to go. I do not have to sell, just ready to move on to something new. The money wouldn't hurt the family budget either.

    1981 Set
the 1981 set is ranked 3rd on the registry with a GPA of 9.88, Current SMR is $6,657

    1982 Set
the 1982 set is ranked 2nd on the registry with a GPA of 9.59, current SMR is $6,997 - This set is highlighted by the Couples RC in PSA 10, 1 of only 2 on the pop report. My guess is that card alone should sell for over $1,500

Any thoughts on selling these sets? Is this a good time? Is Green Jacket Auctions a good way to go?

You can find my sets on the registry under the name 262 Runner

Yes, Lew has some nice golf stuff.
I would recommend the Green Jacket site. They have another auction coming up for Masters week. I consigned a couple of lots the last auction and I though they did pretty well.

  • spoke too soon. vardonfan posted quite a few 7s and some other nicely graded 1927 Churchman on eBay just about an hour ago. 3 I need for my all PSA 7 set which is really nice to see. If I'm able to pick these up, I'll only need 3 more to complete the set in all 7s.

For those who haven't looked on ebay.....Vardonfan has some great cards he is selling and they are fetching some handsome prices (Damn I missed out on some Millhoff 8's I needed)

Plus Brian is a great guy, so be sure to check him out and bid on some of those PSA graded cards (just make sure I'm not the high bidder) image

  • yeah, Brian is awesome to deal with. The cards he listed will allow me to nearly complete my 1927 set in all PSA 7. I'll just need to add the Leach that is currently out there, and he told me, he's going to put the Havers I need up sometime today.

If I'm able to win those, I'll just need "The Grip" #45 in PSA 7 to finish my set. If anyone comes across one or has an extra, please let me know. gstarling (at) gmail (dot) com

  • Hello fellows. Have been lurking for a long time have helped a few out see post in thread on October 24, 2007. My name is Barry Wilson and I am a golf collector and have a ranked set Barry's find in both 1982 and 1981 Donruss only a few cards short in the 1982 Donruss. See below for want list. I have done business with Kip Ingle and Bob Zajac and they know me well. I have the following to sell or trade and my 1982 donruss need list is listed below the sale and trade list. I am also interested in the older golf sets but have a few other collecting goals first. I am so glad to see so many golf collectors. At National this year there was only Kip Ingle, and I did not get to meet Dave Johnson who I understand is the Jim Crandall of the golf set. Please take a look:

    Barry,

Thanks for the high praise! I can't say I have ever been referred to in that realm before. (I actually would love to know who gave me the JC of golf monniker...and shake their hand!)

While my collection is pretty extensive, I could name a few who have more than I do in terms of quality and quantity, but I also know a few of them do not want to be too well known.

I don't have much in terms of the Donruss cards, I have tried to stay with the earlier sets, although it appears as the number of donruss graded cards increases, the prices are getting to be a bit more reasonable, especially on any 10's

Let us know what older sets you may have an interest in, also, be sure to check out greenjacketauctions.com (and no I am not a paid spokesman) They are a newer auction site featuring just golf stuff. I sold a couple cards through them last time and am looking to consign a few more items for their auction running during masters week.

Welcome (officially) and I AM planning on going to the national in Cleveland this year, so maybe we can meet there!

    Hi guys,

Just wanted to drop a quick note on here, since I just noticed the thread. I'm new to golf but have been doing vintage (pre-WWI) baseball forever. I picked up a bunch of the Ogdens Guinea Golds which vardonfan was selling on ebay last month, and have been on the watch for any additional ones of these cards to pop up. If anyone is interested in selling any or aware of anyone else who is, please shoot me a PM and let me know!

Otherwise, hello to my new fellow golf collectors and hope we'll be chatting in the future....

  • Hello,

I am new to vintage golf collecting (have been collecting vintage baseball) and I was very happy to find this thread.

I picked up my first two cards recently on eBay... both 1928 Millhoff - one of them Bobby Jones (from the auctions by vardonfan). I just followed that up with a raw 1926 Lambert Bobby Jones (didn't receive it yet).

I would like to work on completing the 1928 Millhoff set for now (in PSA 7ish)... if anyone has advice, good sites, good dealers, maybe info on card shows that are good for vintage golf, or anything to sell or trade.... really any info for a newbie like me - it would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards,
    Joe

  • << <i>I was thinking about starting a small golf set. Any thoughts on what to start??? I would want something that presents well in mid-grade without breaking the bank. Anyone dumping a partial or raw set???

    Dave >>

    Dave,

I started a 1930 Wills Famous Golfers set. It's a beautiful set and get be had for relatively cheap considering the age of the cards. The main pro and the main con to the set is that it doesn't have a Bobby Jones card. This is great because that card would be a coin killer but it's bad because, well, it's Bobby Jones. image

    Wow a Jason sighting!

Jason is a great guy and very fair in his dealings. Please DO contact him as he usually has a good inventory of cards and (much like me) is always looking for something new as well!

  • Dave,
Hello and thanks for the kind words. I too wonder what the reserve is on that card Jones card. It does look like a solid PSA 6, with a chance at a PSA 7 (if you get the right grader on the right day). These cards just continue to go up in value, which is a good thing if I am selling and bad thing if I am buying.
    Later,
    Jason
  • Jason,

The jump in prices is not such a good thing for me.... I am just getting started here!

  • Hi Dave,

It appears that Mike thinks the card has a good shoot at a PSA 7? Interesting.

I wasn't able to get my old name transfered to my "new" address so I decided to finally create a new one.

I've been hoping for some new grades to be posted but nada.

These go back to October, but they are the last vintage golf grades for me:

The two PSA 8 1914 Marsumas are both solid 8s. By far the best Marsumas I've run across.

It's good to see the old thread active again.

  • Okay... my second Bobby Jones.

It has pretty nice corners, except for the bottom-right that has a little of the surface issues (looks sharp/but surface enamel loss)

What do you think? A 5?
