Welcome to the thread. There are only a few of us collecting vintage golf cards at this time but you will get all sorts of friendly advice here. I've collected all three major sports and these cards are unlike most of the other sports issues for several reasons. Availability is probably the main one, most of the vintage golf cards were produced in England, with a few in Germany and other places. You won't find all that many for sale on Ebay either. Another is expense. A lot of these cards can be purchased, when available for very reasonable prices. Try purchasing a vintage tobacco baseball card in PSA 7 or PSA 8 for less than $ 100, sometimes less than $ 20. These sets are also quite small ranging from 12 to 50 cards for the most part. I've put most of my sets together by buying complete sets from English collectors or dealers and from trading with other members you see frequent this thread.

Check out the Registries to see what you like. 1900 Copes, 1923 Copes, 1924 Wills, 1927 Churchman, 1928 Millhoff, 1930 Wills, 1931 Churchman, and 1939 Players and sets that come to mind that you might be interested in. If you like real photos try the 1927 Churchman small set. The set has 50 black and white photos of the best golfers of the day. This set is also the most available and except for the stars in PSA 8, not all that expensive. If you like caricatures, try the 1931 Churchman small set. It's one of my favorites and the cards are in color. It's a tougher set in high grade but also one of the more available sets.

Check out what you like and Dave, myself, Brian, Jason, and a few others would be glad to give you specific advice on availability, price, etc. I'm sure we all have some extras you can get too when you decide on where to start.

    Good luck.

Dave, have you noticed we've topped the 100 entry mark on the thread? Thanks for starting it up. It can only help our little sector of collecting.

    Welcome!

Peter and Brian have said it well, there is a lot of good choices out there when it comes to golf cards and we all get along pretty well!

Check out a few of the registry sets, Peter and I have added photos as well as Jason to ours, (sorry Brian I haven't checked yours) I want to have photos out there so everyone can see these great cards.

I have sold a lot of the 31 churchmans, but would have the balance left. I will know specifically what I would still have left over by tomorrow, so I will send you a PM with details.

    Brain,

Congratulations on your progress, especially with the 1928 Millhoff, 1927 Churchman small, and 1931 Churchman small sets. Unless you get real lucky, upgrading a few cards at a time is pretty much the only thing you can do. It's tough and you end up with a number of extras but it's also loads of fun. I will get back with you this weekend.

Here are a couple of scans of the cards that just came back. The Tait PSA 2 is puzzling. Clean back and probably the best looking card of the bunch as I think they were quite generous with some of the grades.

    Brain,

Nice cards. The Tait is puzzling, especially considering you managed some PSA 7s. I wish my Vardon had gone in with your group, maybe I would have managed a PSA 8 out of it instead of only an 8. image

Thanks for the great scans. What were your settings on the scans? They sure are nice and clear.

I am a little surprised at some of the 7's and they must have made up for it with that 2. The Morris has a crease and got a 4. I'll submit the Tait card again just to see what happens.

On this new scanner I scan everything as a document rather than an image and save it as a either a .tif or .jpg and just scale it down a bit in photoshop. When I scanned it as an image it was grainy and I thought something was wrong with the scanner. Not really sure why that works but I'm happy with it now.

The scan of Vardon looks better than the actual card. image

One of the good thing about collecting vintage golf is that even the largest sets fit nicely into one of the Pennzoni display cases. Try that with 1975 baseball. image

    Hey everyone!

For something a little fun to start off the new of of 2006. I signed up for a CBSsportsline fantasy golf league. There are 8 spots in the league, I of course will have filled one of them.

I was thinking if I could get 7 other folks to join here from the golf board, it may be fun.

I have never done a golf league before, but the rules are rotisserie style points based on a bunch of categories like scoring, money earned, driving distance and accuaracy etc.

If interested drop me a PM with your address and I will send you a league invite!

    and best of all.....it's FREE!!!

Ok, 2 things....first, the 1931 Churchman Prominent Golfers that ya had bsocha, I may be interested in some. I have never had any golf cards, period, but it is definately something I want to venture into, and I think that set would be a great starting place. Second, to Golfcollector, I would definately be interested in joining up for the golf league.

Being a newbie here ( the little lady got me a 2 yr membership) I have no idea how to send a PM....any help would be greatly appreciated, and happy holidays to all !

    Brian,

For some reason sporstline will not accept your email address to send an invitatino to you. I may try another rout if you can send me a different email address.

Also, VINTAGEGOLFCARDS on ebay has some great rare offerings up for sale.....lot of low pop churchmans, millhoffs, and even some very elusive marsumas.....take a look. Just don't out bid me!!!

    Merry Christmas everybody!

Dave, try cabo_1@yahoo.com and see if that one works.

I saw the Millhoffs and Churchmans earlier today. I have a feeling we might bump into each other on at least a few of those auctions. image A couple of the starting bids seemed slightly steep (1927 #29 Leach PSA 9 for $499) but overall not too bad.

Here are the latest 2 subs that showed up today. Whole lot of 7's. The Millhoffs are the resubmits from the 19 that they said were trimmed. There were 2 or 3 that were definately trimmed but they kicked the rest of them out as trimmed and I've sent the non-trimmed ones back in a few at a time. I guess Guedalla really was trimmed.

Has anyone seen the large amount of golf cards on ebay recently! It is a dream!

The vintage golf market seems to be gaining momentum all the time.

I will be listing a few myself. I have the leftovers from my earlier 1931 churchman offerings. If anyone is interested here is what is left over.

    #10 PSA 6
    #14 PSA 6
    #20 PSA 6
    #7 PSA 6
    #10 PSA 5
    #11 PSA 5
    #49 PSA 5
    #30 PSA 4
    #50 PSA 5

I also have a 1948 Kelloggs Pep Sam Snead RC graded a PSA 3 and a 1937 Kelloggs Pep stamps complete panel with Walter Hagen and Leo Durocher that is a PSA 5 (highest graded)

If you have an interest let me know before I throw them out to the masses!

    Happy New Year!

Firstly 'Hi' to the members of this board especially those with an interest in golf cards. I collect all cards of all shapes and sizes but i do have a preference for golf subjects.

Here is a picture of a very rare 'Bobby Jones' card I thought you might like to see.

Sorry my name is 'Martin'. I didnt add that on my profile!

Jason - I wish i had more! This is the only one I have ever seen.

Interestingly PSA have graded one card under the year '1934' however that does not tie up with the days and dates on the back of the card! I think the card is '1932' but there may be other issues in other years.

Do any of you own that graded card? I would be interested to know the dates on the back.

Brian - I have some 1927 & 1931 Churchmans waiting to be graded, once I have got them done and I know what I need I will drop you a line.

    Martin!

    Happy New Year and Welcome!

That Bobby Jones is a great card. A friend of mine here in Lincoln has one but he is basically married to it and no amount of tempting trades is ever getting it out of his hands. His is a different card number. I think yours looks a bit nicer image

In other news, I purchased the #1 1923 Copes Golf Strokes set to combine with my own and take the overall GPA to around 7.63. Our sets were just a fraction apart in GPA and when Jack offered me the chance to purchase his set, there was really no decision to be made on my part.

It was a tough time of the year to purchase such a great set, but as most of you know this set is extremely rare and it was an opportunity I could not pass up. I will get the registry updated today and hopefully add scans as well.

Now if I could only find a nice Marsuma set........

    Dave,

You are so right. Vintage golf cards are gaining recognition. There was definitely some strong action on these cards, especially considering most of them were "commons".

Did you happen to pick up any?

I'm anxiously awaiting the upgrade of your 1923 Copes set. With your recent purchases, you should be closing in on the best graded vintage golf card collection. Nice job.

    Peter,

No I did not win any. I only bid on 2 of them - 1 millhoff and 1 churchman. If I would not have just bought that Copes set, I would have likely been more aggressive on a few of them.

Brian, saw you picked up a couple though. Nice job!

Makes sense. Since that same person also sold a card that was 1 of 1 and now that card has a population of 2. That must have been a killer raw set that Jack picked up.

    Guys,

I was wondering why the PSA 8 Hagen was being sold. With the 4 PSA 8s accounted for, I was puzzled with the sale of the Hagen. I let my subscription lapse until my move is completed so I don't have access to the population or SMR reports to see what's going on with new grades. Did you notice if the PSA 9 1/1 Millhoff that sold has a population of 2 now?

Do you think better cards are being discovered or maybe the standards have been lowered a little???

It seems like a lot of my previous 1927 PSA 8s from a year or so ago were sharper than some of the PSA 8s I've received lately. Maybe it's just my imagination or maybe my earlier finds were highend 8s and my later submissions have been low end 8s???

The 1/1 Millhoff is now 2. It updated this morning. I won the auction yesterday but I sort of figured Jack had another card in PSA 9 already graded but not on the report though he did advertise the card as 1 of 1. It just didnt make sense that he'd be selling a PSA 9 1/1 out of the blue without another 9 already in hand.

I still havent come close to figuring out the "little card" grading. I think a lot has to do with who you get for a grader. Some cards that look great come back as 5's and 6's and others that might get an 8 just dont look as sharp as 8's that I've bought from you guys from being graded a while back. I have had some good luck with resubmits as PSA 5's have become 7's and a couple of 6's have become 8's. Its a crapshoot.

When a high grade card is listed with a population that has not been updated yet, but the seller knows there's been another graded, should they report the card with the old or new population?

Too me, it seems a little dishonest. Maybe technically correct, but still not on the up and up as far as I'm concerned.

I think its dishonest if you have the replacement card in your hand (or on its way) and you know the population report isnt updated until monday morning and your auctions are ending Sunday. Here are the 3 Millhoffs and how he worded them along with their new pop's:

    1928 Millhoff Golf C. A. Whitcombe PSA 8 (1/2) (Pop now 3)
1928 Millhoff Golf Mrs. Guedalla PSA 9 (1/1) (Pop now 2)
1928 Millhoff Golf Walter Hagen PSA 8! (1/4) (Pop now 6!)

I sort of knew Jack had another Guedalla when I bid on the 1/1 but if I was someone else who doesnt follow the set collecting or these things and I bought a PSA 9 1/1 and 24 hours later the population had doubled and I found out that this seller had the 2nd card yet advertised it as 1/1 then I might have an issue with it.

I personaly would not sell a low pop card that way. I have on occasion put in my listing that a card is a 1 of 5 pop as of such and such day, for the very fact that sometimes the pop report changes in a week where I list a card.

I once had a buyer come unglued at me for selling a Pop 1 of 3 card that ended up a pop 1 of 5 by the end of my auction. Since I did not own either of the new 2 cards, how was I supposed to know.....hence the disclaimer I now put in some of my auctions.

    Dave,

We've both sold a number of cards and at times populations increase while we are selling. That is understandable and we have no control over that. I've had the same happen to me. My concern is when someone sells a card that they just had graded themselves and knows the population has changed but still reports the old population.

Yes I would agree it is not something I would do....I would be particuarly not happy if I would be bidding on a card that the seller had knowledge that the population had changed and was not being forthcoming with that information.

Peter to get back to your first point

<< <i>Do you think better cards are being discovered or maybe the standards have been lowered a little??? >>

I think it is a bit of both. I noticed in the Copes set that I purchased that many of MY cards that were the same or even lesser grade appeared to be stronger than the same numbered card of the set I bought. Grading is pretty consistent overall, but there are always cases for each of us where we feel one card got graded too harshly image or that we got lucky on one once and awhile. image

The other part to remember is that the majority of the cards we collect were all produced overseas. If you look at the purchases yourself, Mike, me and others have made in the past year, it is obvious that a lot of high grade material is still out there. I think this coupled with the higher prices we are starting to see will start brining more of it out of the woodwork and into PSA holders. The word on PSA is getting out over in England. Even some of the dealers I have bought for years that are located overseas are now grading some Jones and Hagen cards in particular- - - - - as they know they can receive premium prices on those cards.

    Just my 2 cents......

    Dave,

Thanks for your replies. I've always found your opinions to be honest and I value that. I'm also happy to see all this new material showing up. As recent as two years ago, there were several sets I thought would take me a lifetime to achieve set PSA 7s or better. It's now apparent that PSA 7 sets are possible for most sets with PSA 8 sets possible with a few too.

Yes, I've also noticed British dealers grading more and more cards. With more cards hitting the market, prices have been rising due to more collectors realizing these cards are now available. It does make it more expensive for us now though. image

Thanks! I'm a little surprised that it went for about 1/4 of SMR. I guess SMR might be a little off in regards to that series. Now I'm just waiting patiently for PSA to add the 1901's to the set registry. image

Heres are the results from my latest adventure. I resubmitted the Tait PSA 2 and it came back a 2 so I'm still baffled. Overall not too bad but still too many 4's.
