    Peter,

Thanks again for the cards. With your help I can definately get to the 75% mark on the World Golf Hall of Fame set. I will send you an email with the Churchmans I could use. You have already racked up some "store credit" sending me some of the newer cards to complete my set. Let me know what you are looking for.

Also, Ron, Nice job on the Churchmans, I have to start working to get moved up. Going from #1 to #3 in the standings in less than 12 months is painful!

I read another thread as to "who would you vote for on the registry awards if you had a vote", so I thought I would add my 2 cents here with the golf crowd.

Best Modern Set - The Ultimate Nicklaus Collection - Jack Nicklaus Player Set. At 94.38 % complete on a 160 card set, (and some very tough or low numbered I might add) I think this is a very impressive 1st year entry.

Best Vintage Set. - Peter Parker - 1927 Churchman Famous Golfers Small. Ok, Ok so I am a bit biased here, but I used to rule the roost on this bad boy and now am #3! Peter hits the charts this year with a stunning weighted GPA of 8.08. Not bad for a set that is almost 80 years old. Knowing his passion for this one, I see that GPA continuing to climb, although upgrading his current set will be quite a feat!

Best Player Set - McDobbs - Bobby Jones Basic set. This one is equally impressive. Only missing 1 card to be complete and some of these cards in these grades would set you back new car purchase! 3 1920's Bobby Jones cards graded Mint 9! Are you kidding me! I met Mike at the National and actually got to see the whole collection in person. IMPRESSIVE

Hall of Fame Golf Collecting Member. VintageGolfcards- Jack has 11 vintage golf sets registerd. They are 1914 Marsuma, 1923 Copes Golf Strokes, 1924 Wills Golfing; 1927 Churchman Large Series #1, 1928 Churchman Large Series #2, 1928 Millhoff Famous Golfers, 1930 Wills Famous Golfers, 1931 Churchman Prominent Golfers Large, 1936 John Cotton Golf Strokes a/b, 1936 Player Championship Golf Courses, and the Walter Hagen Master Set. Guess what. He is #1 in all ELEVEN of them. A truly remarkable collection.

  • Dave,

Thank you for the kind words on the 1927 Churchman small set.

    Here are my thoughts :

Best Modern set : Golf Rules (Albert DeSalvatore) 1981 Donruss Golf. Al has held the top spot for three years now and is at a GPA of 9.76 out of 9.87. There is and has been plenty of competition for this set, including myself, over the past several years. This set is pretty much recognized as a rookie set of most of the best golfers of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I have seen plenty of 1/1s go for more than $ 1000 during the past couple of years too. When it comes to competition, this is the # 1 golf set in my opinion.

Best Vintage set : David Johnson 1900 Copes Golfers. Come on now, at 100% this 105 year old set has no rivals. Completing the set in mid or even low grade raw is a task in its own. Dave has amased a set with a GPA of 6.63. He has 13 PSA 8s and 44 of his 50 cards are 1/1 highest in grade with only two cards having a higher grade. Can you say dominance. This set may never be surpassed.

Best Player set : I fully agree with Dave, Dobb's (Mike Dobrynio) Bobby Jones Basic set is awesome. Not only is it a fantastic golf set, it's a great player set no matter the sport. I believe it needs consideration for the best New Set of the year.

Hall of Fame Golf Collecting Member : Again, I agree with Dave, Jack Zugay is without a doubt the master of graded golf cards. Jack befriended me when I first began collecting graded golf cards and has no rival when it comes to graded golf sets. I've been fortunate enough to see scans of some of his awesome cards. He specializes in the truly rare sets, some of which I don't even have one example for my collection.

I hope PSA takes a look at how this sector has grown in the past couple of years and considers giving golf it's own icon as they have with boxing.

I would like to also express how much this small group of collectors is willing to help newcomers too.

I just got done adding scans to all my cards on the registry. May have missed one or two in a newer set but after adding almost 120 scans today, my eyes are blinded by my scanner....

Check out the pics on the 1900 Copes and also the 1923 Copes. Still think the grading was a bit harsh on the 23's. Those cards are razor sharp!

  • Dave,

Thanks for sharing your two Copes sets with us. They are fantastic. If I happen to come across any that will help you out I will definitely let you know.

The 1923 # 31 looks like it has something going on at the bottom middle, but I can't see anything wrong with the last card from the scan to warrent the PSA 5. Maybe it has a tiny crease? Either way, fantastic set...........I will keep an eye out for upgrades for you.

    Thanks,

  • Ron,

I upgraded the # 9 and # 18 cards. # 9 is definitely the best condition in the set and probably didn't miss PSA 10 by much. Thanks again for the trade.

  • Dave,

I have to agree. Jack definitely deserves recognition for his collection as do you and Mike. I guess we will just have to wait until next year. At least the wait won't be as long this time around. I wonder, has PSA recognized any foreign made sets? Just a thought.

  • I sent this set in on a whim and thought they all had a good shot at 7 and some 8's. I'm a little disappointed in the 5's because I didnt see a single 5 in the bunch but I guess this is a pretty hard set to get in high grade so I shouldnt be complaining too much. The 5's might be making another visit to PSA in the near future:

The last couple of days I picked up some nice stuff. A complete 1930 pattreiouex Celebrities in Sport set and a 1927 churhman small walter hagen which appears to be at least a psa 6/7/8 range

Most of the Millhoffs look really sharp including the Jones and Hagen, so it is still a good price and still well under what I was going to pay for it.

  • Thats still a good price on that set. I had a bid set to go for close to $400 and figured I'd easily get it since it was sitting at around $59 all day. I was quite wrong. image The last couple of Millhoff sets that have shown up on Ebay have been sold offline before the auction ended. At least this one lasted until the end which is a nice change. I have a supposed "Mint" set of Millhoffs coming in this week from the UK. The guy was so confident that I'd love them that he's sending them to me to check out for free and if I dont like them I can just send them back. If I want to keep them, I'm getting them at a fantastic price. Cant really beat that deal.

Yes Brian, they do look pretty nice, too bad it it is not a complete set though, just 19 of the 27

  • Jason,

Nice grades. I know you're going to like all those PSA 7s and 8s. I have a couple of 8s that mush have just missed 9 by a hair.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Nice grades on the '31's. Those are hard cards to get in 7's and 8's.

  • The set of Ogden's came in today. I have a quick question. While the fronts on 75% are fantastic, about 25% of them have faint writing on the back which someone wrote in light pencil to identify what series these came from. How much does PSA take off for something like this? See the scans below:

  • Brian,
Those cards look really nice. I don't think the marks will affect your numeric grades, but you probably will get the MK qualifier on them. I have a few just like yours and I have been holding off on submitting them. I don't know what to do either.

    Everyone,

I would like to acknowledge Brian on the boards. image

My financial institution made a huge error in a deposit which has forced me to run him through the wringer to get things straightened out. Thanks Brian, for being helpful, understanding and easy to work with...

Now that I got that out of the way sell me some of those Millhoffs!! image

Speaking of Millhoffs. Here are the cards I won off ebay from a message or two ago.

Here are the maybe cards to grade, overall pretty nice but a few minor flaws.

    image

These three are a bit better, the Hagen has one small corner knock, but will probably grade these.

    image

This last group is the best of the lot, a few off centered which is common but very sharp corners and pretty decent reverse centing (which is also a common problem plauging this issue!)

    image

Finally the Jones card - the real reason I bought the lot. I think it has a real shot at a PSA 8 worst case would think it is a solid 7. Just a small tough on the lower left corner and decent centering.

    Thanks for looking!

  • No problem on the bank issue. We all have to deal with the dolts at the bank from time to time so I know how that goes.

Those Millhoffs do look pretty good. I was unsure how they'd look up close but that Jones card is fantastic looking.

Here are some stragler grades that just came in. Most of these cards I figured to be in the 6 or 7 range and they'd just been sitting around my desk at home so I sent them in to get them out of the way. The Jones card has a surface crease (the guy wrapped it in saran wrap and put it in a regular envelope and shipped it from the UK and of course the envelope got bent as did the card. He wouldnt do a refund so I was stuck with the card) so I'm surprised it went as high as 4. The 1931 card has a small chunk missing from the back yet it still pulled in an 8 and thats a very tough card to get in 8 (only the 2nd one graded an 8 with none higher). The Vardon card (to me) was the worst of the bunch yet it pulled in a 9OC. I thought the rest would be 6's or 7's so I had a few surprises and a few disappointments. Once the full Millhoff set gets graded I'll put the grades up and we can work out some trades.

  • This is about what I expected. The Paxton and Morris had creases yet the Tait I figured would be in the '5' range. Still, five PSA 7's (without the MK) on 100+ year old cards isnt too bad when you consider there have only been 8 graded 7 or higher ever.

  • Brian,
Those are some great grades. That is a tough set with the black borders. Good job.

  • Thanks. I think they made a mistake with the Tait and Paxton cards and accidently switched them but wont know until I get them back. I know the Paxton card was seriously creased and I figured it'd get a 1 and I wasnt even going to send it in except I wanted to submit the entire set. The Tait card is good (the picture is earlier in the thread) but has writing on the back. I figured Tait would be 5 or 6 with the MK. Theres no possible way Paxton got a 4 with the amount of creasing he has. I'll scan some pics when they get back here.

The rest of the submission was average. I did get a PSA 9 1927 small Sweetser and three 7's and an 8 on some 1930 Wills. The rest of the grades were roughly what I expected in the 6/7 range.

  • Brain,

Nice job. I'm surprised you got so many PSA 7s from the Ogdens considering they're over 100 years old and have black boarder. I've sent in several cards from the 85 Topps football set and gotten 8s. I would love to see how you did on the rest of the submission.

  • Heres the rest of the sub. I still have trouble figuring out the "little cards". The Jones rookie I figured on 5 or 6 and the 1927 Sweetser I thought would be a 7 with an outside shot at 8. The 1930 Wills were nice but after the 1924 Wills I wasnt sure what to expect so I'm happy with those. The Millhoffs are just killing me. I honestly cant see the difference between an 8 and a 5 (or a "trimmed") when I look at them. I was hoping for 7's on the other 1927 Churchmans but got 6's and needed several of them to help finish my 1927. I got the first Millhoff sub back a couple of days ago and looked at the 8's and the 5's really close and dont see anything on either one that would indicate one being an 8 and one a 5. The centering is the same and the 5 has a very very slight rough edge on the back but thats it. Just for fun I'm going to send the 5's in again (along with a few "trimmed") and see what happens.

I received the Millhoffs back from PSA and sure enough, about half of the ones they said were trimmed were actually trimmed. It took some real close looking to see it but it was there. The other ones I'm going to send back and see if they'll grade them. I'm still baffled why anyone would ruin a really nice card (the rest of the card looks perfect) by doing this.

sorry, I sent in a duplicate card for a friend of mine here in LIncoln that also was the same card in the 1927set. I put this note to myself so I would be sure I did not get him back the wrong card. This is also why I added it to my submission and not one I sent in on his behalf that should be back any time.

  • Dave,

Nice job on the 1931 submission. You have me looking over my shoulder again. All I can do is hope one of my Hagens grades PSA 8. When you get your 1927 grades back let me know what's available. Maybe we can work something out for some 1931s you can use. If you win my Hogan we might work something out for any extra 1927s or 1931s you might have too. image

I hope to get my 1923 Copes in the next week. I'll let you know how they look. Not that you would be interested in any upgrades in that obsure set. image

    Thanks for the fix.

  • Dave,

Not too shabby. I could definitely use the # 22 in PSA 8.

    LMK,
    Peter

The 1923 Copes set doesn't look too bad. Mostly PSA 5 and 6s. Unfortunately, the last two cards look like PSA 2 or 3s, very well worn.
    Currently collecting

Vintage golf, 1981-82 Donruss golf, and a few other odds and ends.

I've been considering a vintage golf set for a long time, and this posting got me reallu thinking...anyone have any thoughts on somewhere good to start ? Of course, price, availability, etc are all factors, but any help with a good place to start would be great.

  • It really depends on a few things. Some people like the "real images" cards (1927 Churchman, Millhoffs, etc) while others like things like the 1930 Wills and 1931 Prominent Golfers. Another is price. Only rich guys like Dave and Peter can afford the early Copes cards. image Yet another is availability and you'll find the people on here who collect golf are nice guys and love to help out with extra cards that people might need. At different times different people will have a bunch of extra graded (or raw) cards available for anyone wanting to either start or fill a set. Like Dave, I have a ton of 1931 graded Prominent Golfers available and should have a bunch of 1927 Famous Golfers also available in a few weeks and will gladly help out if you decide on either of these sets.

Drop me a PM and I can give you more details and advice if you're interested.
