  • Hi Jason,

That 1931 Churchman Large set sure looks nice. Most collectors have no idea how tough the set is in high grade.

    I've sent you a PM.

Hello. I don't have a problem and I appreciate you posting the link to the other Forum.

  • Jason,

So how does one find the card that is your avatar (Copes Old Tom)?

I've looked under every rock and have yet to find one that I could even consider bidding on or consider purchasing.

Wondering if you had an idea as to how often opportunities show themselves for that card?

    Regards,
    Joe

  • Joe,
Hello. I would love to find one for myself. The one in my avatar is from a reprint set that I bought. A PSA 6 sold a little over a year ago for a little over $1,000 (maybe $1,200 but I can't remember for sure) on eBay. I believe Dave (GolfCollector) was the seller. You don't see many for sale in any condition from either Tom Morris or (Young) Tom Morris Jr.

Yeah I have sold 3 of them total, 4 if you count my psa 7 that is going to a new owner as part of my current finest registry set.

By the way...a big increase in golf cards listed in the current SMR>...anyone here send those into have them added/updated?

  • Happy to have made these two pickups!!

1900 Copes Old Tom Morris (in my hands) - looks like a 5 or maybe a 6 to me.

1900 Copes Young Tom Morris (on its way to me)

  • bjegolf,
Nice pickups. What a day/week of card buying. The Tom Morris card looks pretty nice. If it grades out to be a 5, you will have done pretty well price wise. If you get a 6, you will have got a great deal. Either way, it is a real nice card. So what is next on your wishlist?
    Jason
  • Hello Jason,

There is nothing on the wantlist right now....
but I am thinking of going after the rest of the Copes set (maybe).

Are there any in the set that are especially tough?

    Regards,
    Joe

  • Thanks Dave.... I will keep it in mind.

I am still deciding on whether or not I should jump in.

I believe Jason has some available as well (unless they all sold).

I will contact both of you if I decide to take the plunge.

1927 Churchman Large #7 SGC 84 (this is 1 of 4 NMs). PSA pop report is off by one.
1927 British American Tobacco #2 SGC 88 (this is 1 of 3 NM-MTs). PSA pop report is off by one.
1927 Churchman Small #27 PSA 9 (this is 1 of 3 Mint 9s). PSA pop report is off by one.
    1928 Churchman Small #28 SGC 88
    1928 Churchman Men of Moment #27 PSA 9 (just 1 of 3)
1930 JA Pattreioux #38 PSA 8 (just one of 2)
1933 Sport Kings #38 SGC 88. PSA pop report is off by one.

I have contacted PSA to update the pop reports and it is in process. Hope to have it updated in the next month.

    All the best,
Mike (Dobbs on the Bobby Jones registry)
  • Mike,

Email sent about a couple of those cards.

  • Joe,

Nice cards. It's hard to believe how truly difficult those two cards really are. I bought a Morris Sr. about 5 years ago but unfortunately, it started flaking when PSA tried to encase it. I probably should have sent it back and requested a PSA 1 or at least an authentic label.

    Peter

By the way..the Morris PSA 6 Jr 1900 Copes is not a one of one. It is one of two..evidently PSA has not updated the pop report. I can assure you I still have one in my collection! image

Thanks for the note ...I am still around....just not as much.

I have a two year old taking up most of my time now...and yes I do have a deal in place to sell the majority of my collection. But, I likely will pick up some nice raw stuff for when he is older....

Either that or I will continue to buy and grade and then sell to all of you fine folks.

I do still have a handfull of PSA 6 Copes golfers as well as a few 1926 Spalding champions. If you are interested please send me a PM

If you did not have a chance to read Jack Zugay's article in the latest SMR, please do so.....also I need to tell him "thanks" for his mention of me!

Hey Guys, I am new to this thread. I have read just about the entire thread over time, just never had much to say myself. I have been collecting golf cards for a long time. I never considered my cards vintage since I primarily have focused on 81 & 82 Donruss sets simply because I went through my younger years watching all those guys in their prime.

Recently I purchased a set of 1924 Wills Golfing and submitted the entire set. All of the cards have great eye appeal and I am very happy to have this set. The grades I recevied from PSA are not very generous to say the least. I have many 4's and 5's that I thought could be 6's and 7's... I have 2 PSA 1's that I thought are easy 3's. Oh Well, it happens sometimes.

I have included a few scans from that submission as well. Thanks for the good read on this thread.

  • Hi guys...a golf newbie with a question that I started on another thread as I didn't know this existed. I picked up a few of these advertised as 1900 Cope's but am assuming they are reprints as they are printed on darker stock than the one's I have seen on Ebay and also have a faint "watermark" type script that says "MCIL" over and over on the backs. Any chance these are authentic Cope's or hold any value whatsoever? Thanks for any input...

Sorry but that looks like reprint city to me

  • Yes, they are reprints. I have a set with the MCIL lettering on the back. It does look like someone tried to age the reprints though.
  • How rare or how valueable would that card have been if original?

Who is the guy that I read about in a PSA article about Vintage Golf? That was a very nice article! image

  • Hello Dave...

I am not sure if you received my email(s) regarding the availability of your 1900 Copes?

If they are gone... no big deal.....

but if you could email me to let me know either way that would be great.

    Regards,
    Joe

Sorry I have been slow to respond...I will give you all an update.

First off, yes I sold the Copes...Peter, let me know if they got there safely!

Secondly, as some of you know...I had major knee surger on Jan 21st, after that I developed to pulmonary embolisms (fancy way of saying blood clots that dislodged and went somewhere else) I had one in each lung...(not good) This put me back in the hospital for a few days.

While there they found some things on some of the test they ran looking at my blood clots they did not like....

I have had a number of other tests, and a biopsy of some of my lymph nodes in my chest area.

I found out last week that I have been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

The good news is that it appears to have been caught early on...actually if I had not had the other complications, I would not know that I even have it as I have no symptoms and all my other stats and work ups look normal.

Today I had a small surgical procudure done to install a small disc under my skin. This is what they will then utilize to administer my chemotherapy treatments.

I start 8 weeks of Chemo on Monday, with some radiation to follow after that. At this time, my prognosis looks positive.

Sorry I have been slow to get back with a lot of you, but I hope this explains the delay!

  • Dave,

Sorry to hear about your recent troubles.

I honestly was fearing that there was something wrong - because you always reply to my emails swiftly.

Very cool to hear that things were caught early... and I will say a prayer for a speedy recovery.

No biggie on the Copes. Congrats on the sale - and congrats on the pickup Peter.

    Have a great weekend.

    Regards,
    Joe

  • I'm not really a golf guy but I figured this would be the proper thread to post what I believe is Gene Sarazen's rookie card.
It's part of the 1921 W551 strip series.

Just finished chemotherapy on Monday. I will have more scans done in a few weeks. The doctors seem very optimistic at this time.

Thanks for all the prayers and kind thoughts!

I used to play alot of golf, quit ten years ago and haven't hit a golfball since. I have two sons who are attempting to make it on the professional mini-tours and one who worked as a club professional for a while. I still love the sport, just don't play anymore. Really enjoy collecting vintage golf cards, some golf autographs and memoribelia.
I owned and operated two Sports Colectibles shops between 1987-1996. It was the most fun thing I ever did. A divorce, the baseball strike, the abundance of product, and Texas getting the lottery made it almost an impossible business. I sold my shops and went online.
Have a few PSA POP 1's, none higher cards from 1901-51. My favorites are my 1901 Ogden Guinea Golds PSA 8's Tom Morris and Harry Vardon.
