    Matt,
I love the array of items you have for sale - especially the Tunney & Dempsey Gartmann's! Those are some of the best looking boxing cards ever printed, in my opinion.
    Good luck with your sales.

I put this on the main board, but I know you don't all check that out so I am posting here as well as this submission is really something....

Can't wait to show some scans!

These are all 1897 Baines Shield and Golf ball cards....Yes you read that right, these are from 1897.
To say these are rare is an understatement. I think there are about 8 Shield card varieties known to exist and roughly 25 different golf ball version cards.
I bought all of these from the same auction and I though they looked really really good, but I could not have imagined this.

I would have been very happy if all came back in the 4-5 range. Per the pop report there were only 5 golf ball variation cards ever graded prior to my submission of 5, and there had been only two of the shield version cards graded. 2 - AUTHENTIC Grades, 1- PSA 2, 1- PSA 3, 1 PSA 5 and 1 PSA 9...so needless to say, these are pretty tough.

Can't wait to get them back in the mail to show scans, normally I post just this stuff on the Vintage Golf card thread on the Set Registy board but this deserved sharing with the entire crowd as well.

    1 VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1897 J. BAINES CRICKET AND FOOTBALL (GOLF BALL/SHIELD) WHIT GOLF-SHIELD
    2 NEAR MINT-MINT+ 8.5 1897 J. BAINES CRICKET AND FOOTBALL (GOLF BALL/SHIELD) WEARSIDE WELL DRIVEN-GOLF BALL
3 MINT 9 1897 J. BAINES CRICKET AND FOOTBALL (GOLF BALL/SHIELD) COMBE HILL GOOD STROKE-GOLF BALL
    4 1 EXCELLENT 5 1897 J. BAINES CRICKET AND FOOTBALL (GOLF BALL/SHIELD) COVENTRY WELL DRIVEN-GOLF BALL
5 EXCELLENT 5 1897 J. BAINES CRICKET AND FOOTBALL (GOLF BALL/SHIELD) ROYAL EASTBOURNE WELL DRIVEN-GOLF BALL
6 MINT 9 1897 J. BAINES CRICKET AND FOOTBALL (GOLF BALL/SHIELD) FOXGROVE WELL DRIVEN-GOLF BALL

An 8.5 and two 9's on cards that are 114 years old.......EPIC.

Thanks for looking and sharing in my excitement!

    Dave

    Starting later tonight.....

I am listing a full set of 1911 Wills Green Circle back variety Boxing cards (set of 36) which is #3 on the PSA Set Registry
I also have near complete runs of the 1902 Ogdens C Series and F Series Boxing cards including many that are highest graded examples.

The Ogdens are exceedingly tough to locate and most examples only have 2-3 that have even been graded. Please check out these boxing cards if you are collector.

I will also be offering a variety of golf cards, masters memorabillia, and some items from Scottish golf courses in the next week in celebration of the Open Championship.

I will have an Ogdens Tabs Tom Morris as well as a Ogdens Guinea Gold Tom Morris hitting ebay in the next week along with a slug of other extras from my collection. Be sure to take a look.

A few golf cards that I have for sale or trade. Many of you have dealt with me before either here or on ebay. I would prefer check or money order on these items. I will pay for priority mail shipping. All prices are delivered. In terms of trading, I am really only looking for 1914 Marsumas, 1924 Wills and 1930 wills cards that I need to complete my sets.

Let me know if something you like - PM is best

I enlarged the scans a bit so you could see the cards better...sorry the scanner resloution is a bit fuzzy on all of these....

Lady golfer from the 1931 Small set. My only Duplicate card at the moment. . - $16
    image

I am always working on the F series 1902 Ogdens. These are WAY tougher than the 1901 Ogdens in my opinion. Grades of 4 are really nice for this issue. Here is TT Gray - $32

    image

Snead Rookie card, has some corner mounting marks otherwise this is likely a PSA 6-7 card. It is super nice, and centered from this tough issue. $65

    image

Another F series toughie. Richardson F243. Good luck finding these. $35

    image

I will mix in a newer one since he was captain of the presidents cup. I upgraded my World Golf Hall of fame set to a PSA 10, so I have this PSA 9 available. $6
    image

Ungraded French Trade card. Guessing from the 1920-30's but unsure of date. A bit oversized compared to other cigarette type issues. Sharp looking card, and in nice shape $15

    image

Another recent upgrade from me. This is a J L Lowe - from the popular Ogdens I base series in 1901. $22
    image

Another I base card of Horace Hutchison. Not as good of shape, but these have not been availalbe as much on ebay lately - $18
    image

James Braid - one of my all time favorites. This is a nice 1902 Tabs PSA 4 - A tough card in this grade - $45

    image

Speaking of tough, how about an even tougher F series Braid. #241. I have only ever owned 3 of these. $60
    image

I bought this card and then found out that PSA will not grade it as they do not have any information on it. It is the same front card design as the Choclate Muerisse card found in the Price Guide to Golf Cards. This has an advertisement for Diamante Shoe Polish on the back and says "Diamante" on the front. Might possibly be a one of a kind card as I have never seen another one like this one. $225

    imageimage

Feel free to make an offer on anything you might be interested in. If not sold here, I will likely put on ebay sometime after the first of the year after the holidays.

    Thanks for looking!

Auction for Bobby Jones J.A Pat, also listed in buy and sell: eBay

I'd love to hear what you think this could possibly grade at; VCP numbers anyone?
  • Options
It is a really nice looking card, but I believe you will have to get it graded to get anywhere near $350 for it. I would put the real price on a PSA 8 between $200 and $250; most of the ones currently on eBay are overpriced in my opinion. It is by far the easiest vintage Jones card to get in PSA 8, so almost anyone that is interested already has one. If you could land a PSA 8.5 or 9, then you are talking. Good luck!

Thought I would also post this here in the event I missed people via email.

    Hello Fellow Collectors!

I am sending you this open letter as you are a person that have bought, sold, traded or conversed with over the years on the topic of golf cards.

I have endured a couple of bouts with cancer over the past 5 years, and collecting has been something that has helped me get through it. I have enjoyed passing my knowledge about golf cards along as there are a number of folks that got me educated on the hobby along the way. With all of that said, I am at a point that while I enjoy collecting, I am realizing that I enjoy the chase more than the cards themselves….keeping that in mind, I have decided to part with my collection.

Today I took the time to list some baseball cards on both the PSA and NET 54 Message boards and basically have them already all sold, or currently in final talks to have them sold.

With these out of the way I will be moving on to my golf cards.

Instead of using an auction house or eBay format, I want to try and first attempt to sell any cards to fellow collectors on a first come, first serve basis. Why, because frankly I would rather it end up with people I know.

I am just in the beginning stages of doing this…at this time, I don’t have a complete listing together, but, most cards that I own can be seen by viewing any of my PSA Set Registries under “ Dave Johnson” I have attempted to add scans to each and every one of them, but I might have missed a couple along the way.

Along with what is on my registries, I also have a number of 1897 Baines Golf Ball Cards and a couple of shield cards. I have a ungraded complete set of Millhoffs and I have all of the more current Upper Deck Sets as well, including Tour Threads, and Front Nine Fabrics. And complete sets from ALL of the UD issues (including all of the autographed rookie cards and cards that are auto jersey from base UD Sets)

I am not in a financial position that I am being forced to sell these cards. Quite to the contrary, I am selling these at a time that I feel is right for me and my family, and whatever monies can be better utilized for other things. With that in mind I am not looking for a quick sale, and if I don’t feel like I get any offers or takers on some of my items, I am totally content with keeping those things for a while longer.

There is no guarantee that I won’t get back into the collecting hobby again, but what I do see myself doing – at least in the near term - is being a person that might buy items with the intent to sell them ( I still have a lot of contacts that turn up some good stuff for me on occasion) and still be a person open for any discussion, advice, questions, or comments about golf cards or collecting in general.

I hope you don’t mind me sending this note to you – and some of you might get multiple copies as I may have multiple ways of reaching you(for that I do apologize) but I felt it was important to give you a little insight as to me selling my collection and that everything is completely OK. I know a couple of years ago when Jack Zugay sold all of his collection via REA, I was unable to reach him and tried numerous times…..Mainly because I wanted to wish him well and was hoping there wasn’t a “bad” reason he was selling his collection. Sadly, I never heard from Jack, and I do hope to this day all is well with him.

With that said, If you have an interest in a complete listing (when I have it compiled) Feel free to email me at the following email address

    Sjohnson22@neb.rr.com

In the meantime, if you are interested in ANYTHING in my collection, please let me know and feel free to make an offer. I have not yet begun to establish any pricing, etc. on my items, but will likely begin to start that in the next week. For now, I wanted to just touch base with all of you, the many friends who I have had the privilege of sharing the same hobby I enjoy.

If you have anyone else that may be interested in knowing this, feel free to pass along, I am sure I have missed someone along the way. I

Look forward to hearing from you…even if it is just to catch up on old times.

    Sincerely,

    Dave Johnson
