The official Vintage Golf Card Thread

It has been talked about from a few of us, and it seems like everytime Peter, Jason, or I post scans people like them, so I figured what the heck, lets start a thread!

To kick it off right, I just received via Fed Ex overnight International from England(I know that wasn't cheap) complete sets of 1900 Copes Golfers, 1923 Copes Golf Strokes, 1927 Churchman Famous golfers small and both large series of the 1927 and 1928 Famous Golfers.

I sold a kidney to buy this great collection, but I must admit they are some of the best looking vintage golf cards from some REALLY tough sets I have ever seen. Hope to sell some stuff off and pay for a whole lotta grading fees. I will keep you posted once I get some back and some scans in.

I would also love to hear from any of you that have an interest in these great cards! I had a chance to meet a few new folks at the National who seemed to like the old golf cards and it also seems that a few others may now be officially hooked. If any of you have any questions on comments let us know here as well.

I am also working to write a pre war golf article for the SMR which I hope will be full of some great scans!

Happy Collecting!

Dave

    Dave,

Congratulations on such a great find. I look forward to seeing some of those scans and the registries jump once you add your graded cards. Wow, a high quality complete 1900 Cope Golfers set. That set is over a hundred years old. Not to offend anyone, but that is twice the age of the epic 1952 Topps Baseball set and these cards came from tobacco packs not wax packs. It's tough enough to find one in mid grade, I can't imagine a full set. I know you shelled out a lot for them, but that will be one amazing set to see on the registry.

I'm very much anxious to see how your pre-war article turns out. If there are any scans I can send to assist you just give me the word.

Below are a couple of scans from the 1914 Marsuma set. These are really tough cards to find in decent condition. I hope everyone enjoys.

Ron, let me know when you get your grades back and please share. I'm holding the PSA 8 Hogan just in case you still want it. I have a small vintage submission at PSA that my have some cards you need.

I know these are not vintage, but take a look at my last submission. Not one of my better ones but the grades are fair and the turnaround time is fantastic.

Nice Peter, the 1982's are tough grading.

I have a bunch of Vijay, Olazabal, Toms and Lehman rookies that should be back from PSA any day. I have the first 2 PSA 10 Vijays ever graded. Need to get factory sets of Pro set if you want high grades, out of retail boxes it is impossible.

    Dave,

Nice job on the Vijah rookie. Didn't the last PSA 10 go for $ 200 or so? I will have to wait for the price to come down before I upgrade my PSA 9.

Have you decided yet on how you're going to get your large stash of vintage graded? I can't wait to see that 1900 Cope set grade out.

    Great job.

As far as I know I have the only 2 PSA 10 vijays, at least according to the Pop report. I have seen some Beckett 9.5's go for about $200. I sold a 9 a couple of weeks back for around $55. My last submssion garnered 8 of the 9 cards that have acheived a grade of 10! Not too bad of a submission!

    Dave,
This thread is a great idea. Hopefully, we can get some other collectors interested in our little part of the hobby. I also look forward to seeing how your most recent purchases grade out, especially the 1900 Copes. I would have loved to have opened that package.

Here are my recent collector’s club submission results. The last three are crack out crossovers and the grades that I was expecting in parentheses. The Millhoff Sweetser is painful, there must be surface wrinkle or something on the front surface that SGC and I missed.

    1 90510365 1928 WA&AC CHURCHMAN 7 ARNAUD MASSY FAMOUS GOLFERS SER.OF 12 6 (PSA 6)
    2 90510366 1930 W.D. & H.O. WILLS 5 GEORGE GADD FAMOUS GOLFERS 7 (PSA 7)
    3 90510367 1930 W.D. & H.O. WILLS 14 ARNAUD MASSY FAMOUS GOLFERS 6 (PSA 7)
    4 90510368 1928 J. MILLHOFF & CO. 10 JESSE SWEETSER FAMOUS GOLFERS 5 (PSA 7 or 8, it was SGC 84/7 --- Ouch!)
    5 90510369 1931 WA&AC CHURCHMAN 9 HARRY VARDON PROMINENT GOLFERS 7 (PSA 7 or 8, I think it is closer to an 8 than a 7)
6 90510370 1998 TOPPS CHROME 77 MICHAEL JORDAN REFRACTOR 8 (PSA 8 or 9 (the centering was the only question), it was a PRO 9.5)

    Dave,

I appreciate your help on the 1927 Churchman small set. Thanks to you it has now eclipsed the 8.00 set GPA. Six months ago, I would have predicted at least a couple of years for that to occur.

How you making out on that stash of high grade vintage? Any decision yet on how you're going to submit the cards? I can't wait to see the results for both Cope sets and the 1927 Large cards.

    Catch you later.

Sending in the following cards today on the set registry 5 day special. I have indicated anticipated grades below. I am intentionally trying to grade these ultra conservatively so hopefully I will be pleasantly suprised later.

1927 Churchman Large Series #1 set.
    Card My rough grade prediction
    #1 John Ball - 5
    #2 James Braid 6
    #3 George Duncan 6-7
#4 Walter Hagen 6-7 (this one has a printing smudge on the left border so not sure)
    #5 Alex Herd 6
    #6 Holderness 6
#7 Bobby Jones 7 (looks nicer than the two 6's I have owned)
    #8 Abe Mitchell 7
    #9 Ed Ray 7
    #10 J H Taylor 7
    #11 Harry Vardon 6
    #12 Wethered 5

    1927 Small Series

    #13 Walter Hagen 6
    #14 Walter Hagen 7
    #27 Bobby Jones 7
    #28 Bobby Jones 7

    1900 Copes Golfers

    Old Tom Morris 5
    Tom Morris JNR 5

    1948 Kelloggs Pep

Sam Snead RC 6 (these are super tough, not centered that well but surface problems which plaque this issue is good)

    1951 Berk Ross

Ben Hogan 7 A little diamond cut but otherwise very very nice.

I am also sending in 2 complete 1937 Kelloggs Pep Stamp Panels, one with Hagen the other with a Sarzen. I have NO IDEA how psa grades these bad boys, but they sure have not graded many of them period.

I will let you know how it turns out. Hopefully I am being the grader of death to myself on these. Wish me luck! image

    Dave,

I'd be estatic with those "conservative" grades alone. I'm sure you will fare better with several of them. I'm especially interested in the 1927 Churchman Large and two 1900 Copes cards. Great job on uncovering those babies. Please keep us posted on the results. With the 5 day grading, the grades will be back in no time.

    Jason,

Nice cards. Those 1928 Churchmans are so tough to find in any condition. You did well with the 1930 Wills also. Those are beautiful and rarely come up for sale in higher graded. Considering they are over 70 years old and came out of tobacco packs.........amazing.

    Nice job.

For anyone who would like to see how the 1928 Large and 1930 Wills look below are some examples.

    Enjoy

Nothing new lately but I thought someone might be interested in this 1914 Marsuma rookie card of HOFer Walter Travis. No, the card isn't in great shape but it isn't all that easy to obtain either. Also, I noticed a new collector to the World Golf Hall of Fame Registry. Nice start Brian and welcome aboard. I hope you enjoy this diverse and wonderful set.

Just got the small vintage submission back. Here is the breakdown I again listed what I predicted along with the grade that I actually received. These were just posted today, so I have not seen the cards yet.

I am obviously excited about the large size Jones and Hagen. The small jones graded an 8 is also a nice bonus.

The snead RC being OC is too bad. Does anyone know if PSA will downgrade one grade and remove the OC designation?

THe Hogan Berk Ross is for sale if anyone is looking for one!!!

The Copes were a pleasant suprise. I have 48 more to submit from the set and most are nicer!!!

Let me know what you think. More going to CA in a couple of days!!!

Congratulations Dave. Those grades are outstanding. From the scans, I thought some of the 1900 Copes had a shot at PSA 7. Still, unbelievable. If you decide to trade any of your extra 1927 Churchman large, let me know. I'm definitely interested in your Hagen and maybe some of the others.

So, what's next to be sent to PSA? I'm definitely interested in the 1923 Copes and 1928 Churchman large. I'm sure you're ready to send in the rest of the 1900 Copes too.

Great job. I can't wait to see the scans.

No grades from PSA yet but I've put together a couple of submissions to mail this weekend. An unbelievable set of 1959 Top Flight Stars I purchased from Mike Dobrynio (Check out his # 1 Bobby Jones player set, awesome indeed.) and some 1914 Marsumas Golf Strokes. The 1959 set should grade mostly PSA 9 with some PSA 8s and possibly some PSA 10s. The Marsumas range from PSA 4 to PSA 7 with an outside chance at a PSA 8. Both submissions will be on 45 day teers.

    Dave,

Nice scans. I've been out of town for the past week and most of the previous two weeks. I'm still waiting on my grades from my 8/17 submission. It's on a 45 day tier so it could be another month yet. PSA has spoiled me with such quick turnaround time recently that I forgot how long it can take to get my grades. Have you sent in any additional cards? I anxious to see how the 1923 Copes do.

Well sold the Hogan Berk Ross PSA 7 and the Sarazen Pep Panel on ebay. The Hogan went for $256 ( about what I was hoping although I thought it might get snipe bid lucky at the end) and the Sarzazen also did well. Doubled my money on initial investment. I still have a Hagen Pep panel with Leo Durocher on it as well but guessing it could go for a lot more.

    # 15 Ben Hogan PSA 9

Fed Ex shipment has made it. Trying to get them in under the gun for the set registry awards, this is as nervous as I have ever been sending cards to PSA. Having $15k in transit will get your blood pumping!

I am hoping for a lot of 7's and 8's on this submission. I will have completely graded sets of 1900 Copes and 1923 Copes after these get graded. SO far I just sent in the Tom Morris SNR and JNR and got back some nice grades. You can see the pics earlier in this post.

Wish me luck, I look forward to sharing scans when I get some back.

By the way if anyone has a PSA 9 Ray Floyd 1981 Donruss, or any PSA GSV golf cards that would help me on the World Golf Hall of Fame set registry, let me know. I can send immediate paypal payment.

    Dave,

Good luck on those large submissions. The Patty Berg was mailed to you today from Charlotte. Once you receive it just send me what you think it's worth. Good luck with the World Golf Hall of Fames set. It's fun collecting such an interesting array of cards for one set. Great idea.

    Catch you later.

    Well,

No grades yet on my 45 day 8/17 or 9/14 submissions. PSA must be swamped with last minute submissions. My first sub needs to be done by Friday to make the deadline by my calculations. I will probably hold off on any additional submissions until I get my last two back.

If anyone has unearthed a nice collection lately or made a nice purchase please share.

    Happy collecting,

    Peter

Well the 72 card submission is done and on line. I am too excited to even cut and paste results for now. This submission had 40 of the 1900 Copes Golfers, a complete set of 1923 Copes golfers and a lone 1931 small Gene Sarazen. I am waiting for the other 5 day 25 card submisson to get posted on the site today before I put it out here. You hopefully will all be impressed.......

Lets just say I am doing cartwheels right now. More to follow.

Does anyone have any 1923 copes Golf Strokes graded in PSA 6 or higher. I am looking for 4 cards in particular. Let me know if you know of anyone who as any of these graded at all. They are really rare.

First off, I am apologizing in advance for this long post. But if you like a great story of a once in a lifetime find of cards, this is a good read.

This past year I picked up an amazing collection of early golf cards. If you have checked out my first post on the this thread you may have seen details. 6 complete sets including 3 - of the toughest vintage golf card sets to find period. for near 5 figures. The purchase price isn't important, but I will share later the comparitive graded SMR value.

The collection consisted of the following:

1900 Copes Golfers Complete set of 50
1923 Copes Golf Strokes set of 32
1927 Churchman Famous Golfers Small set of 50
1927 Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series 1 Set of 12
1928 Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series 2 Set of 12
1931 CHurchman Prominent Golfers Small series of 50

First I sent in just the 4 biggies from the 1927 Churchman Small set. 2 Bobby Jones cards and 2 Walter Hagens. I received a 6 and an 8 on the 2 Jones cards, and a 7 and 8 on the two Hagens. I have the #2 set on the registry currently (check out Peter Parkers #1 rated set if you have a chance) I still have 46 "other cards to grade and anticipate many 7 and hopefully a few 8's based on their condition.

I also sent in the 1927 Churchman Large Series 1. This set is very tough and has the Jones and Hagen (both were graded PSA 7's and many others "commons" graded 6 and even 1 psa 8. The set graded out at a GPA of 6.50

On that same invoice I sent in The Old Tom Morris and Tom Morris Jr. from the 1900 Copes set. Old tom garnered a grand ol grade of 7 and young tom a nice psa 6. (these are by FAR the highest of these cards ever graded.)

Last week, I dropped the big money (for me at least) and sent in the remaining 48 cards from the 1900 Copes set and the complete 1932 set. I also sent in the 1928 Churchmans Large series of 12 and The Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen from the 1931 Churchman small set. Here are the invoices:

The 1900 Copes set is by far the most valuable and rare golf card set ever produced. I have not inputed the grades yet but if my math is correct my GPA will be at or above 6.25 range. Pretty remarkable for almost non-exsistent 105 year old cards.

The 1923 Copes 2nd will be the 2nd all time finest registerd by a whopping 1 grade (1st 7.28 - mine 7.25) As we all occasionaly feel a card or two in this set may be a bit undergraded as I was a little suprised I did not receive one psa 9 and I thought I has 4 or 5 with a legitimate shot at that grade.

I still have 93 cards from two set to submit, and already I could not be happier!

This is definately my FIND of a lifetime.

Hope to have the sets entered on the registry and scans added soon

    Dave

    Dave,

Those two Copes sets are outstanding. I know you had some misgivings on dropping the cash but you definitely made out like a bandit in the end. Way to go. I can't wait for the images.

It will take some find or a number of finds to come close to your 1900 set and you are soooooo close on the 1923 set. I would be interested in some of those 1923 upgrades. Those are some of my favorite vintage pictures.

As always, thanks for sharing you collection and passion.

    Regards,
    Peter

Kudos to the PSA folks in updating the golf card pricing on the site. If you guys have not checked it out there are a lot of updates to the vintage golf cards. The old golf market has been on fire lately and does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. An ungraded 1901 Copes Tom Morris sold for $500+ the other day as well as an ungraded Sam Snead pulling over $325. wow.

    Ron,
Those are some nice grades. I see you were even able to mix in a few PSA 9's and a PSA 8 Tom Morris. Good job!

I have one submission still at PSA, mainly 1931 Churchmans with a few Marsumas.

    Happy collecting.

    Dave,

Fantastic 1900 Cope's set. I don't see that one being matched any time soon. Glad you got the Wheaties card. You should get the others this weekend. I should have some 1927 and 1931 Churchman cards ready for trade once I get a chance to go though what I have. If you have any interest let me know. I could use your Cope's of Hagen duplicates.

    Regards,
    Peter
