I think your best chance of getting a 9 on the McRae IA would be to legally change your name to "Mr. Discount Sportscards" or "Mr. Four Sharp Corners" before you fill out the PSA Submission form.

You probably had about 100 McRae IA's at one point (maybe you still do)... how many were centered well enough to get a 9 NQ? Hell, I'd be happy with a 7 NQ or a qualified 9 at this point.

Have the 72 collectors gone into hibernation? I suppose it is summer and time to be outdoors, vacation, or what not. I have just returned from vacation myself visiting my sister in upstate NY.

......slim pickens on ebay it seems with far too many PSA 7s and others of less quality................OH well........

Not sure if any of you noticed in the new SMR that a lot of the 'low pop' cards have + marks next to them!

For example....Willie Mays IA, Vida Blue IA, Norm Cash, Felipe Alou, Hal McRae IA, Hank Aaron IA, Maury Wills IA, Bud Harrelson IA and Expos Team have all gone up in value from PSA 6 to PSA 9!

The 'values' still haven't met the 'real' numbers, but at least we are having some of these toughies acknowledged finally.

The cards are only worth what someone is willing to pay regardless of the pop, commons prices are usually dictated by who needs what.
Some guys who pay big for certain cards will "run up" subsequent copies so the underbidder in the previous auction doesn't get the card for a fraction of what they paid....a "patience tax" if you will or maybe just spite.

I also think that some people still associate "Low Pop" with cards that are no longer low pops. The Phillies Rookies is one that comes to mind. A few years ago, it was one of the low pops, but it really isn't anymore. I think some people see it now and still remember it being tough and thus they overpay for it.

I think some cards are still "sleeepers" in terms of difficulty.

Notable tough card #150 N.Cash pop 43 in 8 or better vs. :

#14 Phils Rooks pop in 8 or better=44
#138 Kekich pop in 8 or better=44
#218 Kasko pop in 8 or better= 42

Notable tough card # 385 M.Stanley pop in 43 in or better vs. :

#113 Moret pop in 8 or better= 37
#102 Allen pop in 8 or better= 41
#366 Rosario pop in 8 or better= 44

Here's another interesting comparison,

#708 Foli ia pop 27 in 8 or better

#377 Harmon pop 27 in 8 or better

The last 2 Harmons went for 61.00 & 47.00 while the Foli's are going for almost 4x that....go figure.

The Foli IAs have both the "Mets & Hi # Factor" involved, which I assume contributes to the price difference. There are collectors specifically looking for Mets cards, specifically looking for '72 IA cards & specifically for Hi # cards. That, coupled with those folks attempting to complete the set makes for a higher price on that card. Believe me, I can't wait until that card comes back down to earth with the pricing

I just got a nice group of PSA 8 and 9 '72s back including a Baker in 8. The 9's include: #161 275 314 385 413 428 455 481 516 545 742.
They'll be up on eBay later tonight, joining a large group of other vintage cards already up.

1972 Tim Foli IA PSA 8 Card >>

After being outbid at over 700.00 for the lot of 31 8's that included a Dietz IA and a Mcrae IA (the only 2 cards I needed) I didn't even bother raising the bar on the Foli IA.
I bet if I bid 400.00 it would have fell short, in the end he may not have the best set but it will certainly be the most expensive one.

I see that Chris Rountree put his set up on ebay, he worked on that one for a long time. It will be interesting to see where that one ends...my guess is around 10k.

I was checking out Chris' set up for sale on EBAY. he says you will get some of the variation cards with the set......Too bad the two "Cubs green variation" cards he shows are actually mislabeled and not variations at all.

Anyway I wish him luck in selling it.....

Survey: If you had your choice of opening a box of 1972 Topps. Which series would you pick 1,2,3,4,5, or 6?

My pick would be 5th series .(Williams, Rose, Ryan, Sutton,Robinson Marichal), So let's here some others picks

5th or 6th would be my choices for star cards or hard to find cards. But, I think that if it was just for the fun of it, I'd go 5th for sure.

I'd go for series 3, not too much star power but the thrill of possibly pulling a Mcrae IA, Dietz IA or an Aaron IA in PSA 9 would be awesome .

Series 4 would be my second choice, in series 4 you have what I call the "gold coast" from 433-449 you have 2 Bench , 2 Reggie, 2 Seaver, 2 Williams, 2 Munson, 2 Stargell, Bob Lemon , the Wills IA and the Henderson. Other cards in series 4 are the Reds Rooks and the Garrett. The Hodges along with the Abernathy are both very tough 9's.

After adding my morning receipts I am at 50% of the set with a GPA of 8.15, my goal is to be at 75 % or better by the end of the year .

After losing out on two on ebay over the weekend.............Bill Novick was kind enough to contact me and sell me a Clay Carroll IA PSA 8 at a bargain price..................

hense i still need:

182 - Kranepool IA
230 - World Series
518 - Wayne garrett
582 - Expos Team card

and I need an upgrade the Dietz IA which i currently have in a PSA 7

I will be sending in among other low pops ( through Lowstartmick) a 230, two 518, and a Dietz IA during the next special. (some may not grade out though)

What's the general grade level you guys who are working to complete the set are aiming for? Some of you look to be cool with 8's and others seem intent on 9.

Most will be content to finish there sets in PSA 8.....Two collectors in the registry are working on all PSA 9. A handful of cards in the set only have one or two examples in PSA 9.

I am working on an all PSA 8 set...........but will end up at close to 8.5 when all is said and done...........always looking for bargain PSA 9s

was pulled into this thread because I put up a cardenal traded psa 8 and was surprised by some of the early bidding. I wasn't even going to list the card , I usually don't submit anything to get 8's but threw this one in to fill a sub.

I opened a few 3rd series packs last week , no luck on stars but 4-5 psa 9/10 candidates. pulled a mcrae IA but way oc as usual.

if I was going to open a full box , it would be a 5th/6th box. the best of both worlds. you get the high numbers plus the shot at the rose's and ryan. there were a rew of these boxes around a few years ago, and there were some cool packs that were triple wrapped that were 5th/6th. I opened a few packs with some pretty good success but if you are looking to save money it is tough, do it for the fun!!

I have opened at least a box worth of 72's from all series over the last few years and would say I am close to breakeven but that is only because i graded out some 9's early and a couple 10's. now there only seem to be a few 9's that could bail out a box where there were many back then. happy hunting

That Cardenal Traded card in PSA 8 generally gets anywhere from $60 to $100 (I think that I got mine for $70 or so).

I'd be happy to finish mine in any grade. I started looking for all 8's and ended up getting some 9's when the prices dropped dramatically (and there weren't any more 8's that I needed).

I'm cool with all 8s. For a bit, I started bidding and winning a few 9s, but I went back to my all 8s philosophy and have been downgrading and selling those 9s in my eBay store.

What do y'all think about the set that went for about $9k with the juice in the recent Mastro auction? Sure it had a PSA 10 Garvey but that is a real strong price for a 1972 set.

You have a link?? Was it a complete graded set??

I am curious....................if that was a completely graded set the price was not good.

If it was a mostly raw set then...they price was indeed over the top.

I can't link the auction but it was not a fully graded set it had Garvey and Tommy John in psa 10, with a few other commons graded 10 . It had about 50 psa 9's including Carew, Ryan, Hunter,Fingers and Wilhelm The 8's included Bench, Clemente, Carlton Mays and Fisk. All in all about 70 cards were graded. The rest of the set was described as nm to nm-mt with centering problems on about 15% of the set . As usual with Mastro someone over paid.....or was bidding against the house.

They had a ton of vending and wax boxes that all went for a fortune, $40,000.00 for 13 vending boxes, the 5 wax boxes went for 16 k ...not including the juice. A series one wax box seemed to be a bargain at 2100.

Lots of unopened still around.
