Don't forget about the Dan McGinn. Most examples I've seen do not have a complete arc across the top in the border. However, I've seen quite a few examples of a normal/complete border as well. I think it falls more in the category of "interesting anomaly' rather than a true variation.

  • Not wanting to throw and damper on the crowd. I believe that you will only be able to use PSA recognized variations. If they have a large batch of cards already graded without denoting the variation, you may not be able to get the variety attirbutted. Have had some difficulties with this on FB.

Well, I may be wrong but I do not think that there is any real interest in have a master set on the registry. There just isn't enough variations in the set to make it worthwhile.

Many of the hard core set collectors ( myself included) are getting the variations anyway.

I've picked up most of the 'true' variations with the letter differences (green vs yellow) and one of the checklist variations. But these 'line or no line' are ones that I would not go after. Those seem to be more print defects as someone mentioned earlier as opposed to an actual variation of a card.

But, that's just my opinion. And, as we all know, opinions are like....well, you get the point image

  • That's a pretty tough 9, "back in the day" it was as tough the Kendall in PSA 8. The price really wasn't that crazy compared to some of the 8's Bill won in the past month or so.

Glad I got that one as a submission several years back. Three years ago - I had 37 different 1/1's in PSA 9 in the set. Now the only one I have left is the McRae IA. Like Doritos used to say "Munch away! We'll make more!"

I actually have my sets in Copier Paper Boxes that have been cut down to the height of the PSA Holder. Each box holds about 260 cards and they hold up pretty well. But in order to keep them protected from fire and Mike Castaldi, I have a pretty big honkin gun safe that I use. image Guns out - cards in...

I think that I've heard others on this forum going the same route for larger sets.

  • I keep mine in the standard two-row card box often referred to as a "shoebox." Holds about 140-150 slabbed cards. I've got each series in its own box.

  • I built a box for my '72 set out of red oak plywood. I has six rows (one for each series) that hold 132 cards each with a little extra room to flip through them. It's pretty big, bit it shows the cards well.

    Damn, Arny's a high roller!image

I got a redemption card for a free MJ Roop Binder for the 2005 Bowman Heritage baseball set and I gotta admit, it is the sweetest binder in the world! As the Trapper Keeper was to the standard ntebook, the MJ Roop binder is to the standard D-Ring binder. Of course, the regular price is so ridiculously high that I'd never have bought it if I hadn't got it for free! Actually, I paid $3 to buy the redemption card and then sent it in to get a $30 binder. If you like to keep your cards in Binders, and don't mind that the Binder has "2005 Bowman Heritage" stamped on it, this is a great way to to get them on the cheap!

    Awww c'mon Frank. . .I only want some of the 72s. . .

Seriously, it's such a grind to do a set that big. . .it's just not for me anymore. I am doing a PSA-graded set tho - 1980 BK Pitch Hit & Run. Pretty much got most of the stuff situated in the new house, tho the home office is a mess and I have a ton of home projects to do. Slowly, I'm getting back to cards.

Yeah, the '72 low pops have been going through the roof lately. Mainly due to two individuals willing to pay $1 higher than 'up the ying yang' to obtain these cards. I just hope that these bidders don't put any additional sets together so that I can finally finish my set! image

The good news is that I was able to pick up the Terry Harmon PSA 8 card for a "decent" price finally and am now sitting a hair below 99% complete! Here's my updated want/need list....

Glad I don't care about PSA 10's. I noticed that I can see all of the high bidders bid amounts, that doesn't usually happen without a reserve in place, does it?

  • Nice deal Arny, Bill already has two Houks... I guess he likes you. I paid 189.00 bucks for two Gardners that were run up courtesy of Bill, he also has two of them . It's ok though, there are cards that he will pay dearly for .

Whoever said we wash away with the rain ?
  • Started to put in a bid on that Houk but noticed you were the high bidder, Arny. I got a raw one anyway that should 8. I made an off ebay deal for some super nice tough commons like Houk, Baker, Henderson, and Reds RCs. The Henderson is all but a lock for a 9. Any idea what a Henderson in 9 would fetch right now with all the crazy bidding thats been going on?
  • lostdart58lostdart58 Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭
We talk about the low pop cards having newly graded examples showing up. Since Novenber of last year for instance there have been:

    6 Gardners - 5- 8's and one 9

    11 Schaal IA - 10 8's and one better

    11 Harrelson BH - 10 8's and one better

    6 Foli IA - 4 8's and two better

    5 Harmon - All 8's

    5 Blue IA - 4 8's and one better

    5 Dave marshall - All 8's

    8 Reds Rookies - 7 8's and one 9

    5 Henderson - 4 8's and one better

    Yet there has been only:

    1 Grote 8

    1 McRae IA 8

0 Dietz IA ( since before August 2005)

and finally the Kendall card has had only TWO newly graded since June of 2004 - both 8's

Of the 17 Kendall cards out there in PSA 8 or better 12 of them show up in the set registry. ( including one from the David Barkis recently sold set and one from Eric Jarvi's retired set which I believe he still owns)

Some of the other 5 available Kendall cards are probably in such non-PSA registered sets such as yorklvh, glibisher, and maybe psuinnyc.

.......my trivial trivia for the day.........

  • A Harrelson sold for 15.50 yesterday and it looks nicer than the one I paid 100 bucks for.

The Schaal has really expolded but of the one's I've seen recently including the one I have are pitiful looking 8's. Yorklvh has the nicest one I have ever seen.....image

What if those "missing" kendall's are crackouts.....? image

Any Kendall , Dietz, or Mcrae is going to be huuuuuuge.
Whoever said we wash away with the rain ?
  • OK... two guys bid over $2200 for the 1/1 PSA 10 Dave Kingman and two others bid over $1750! I wonder how much Frank Bakka had to pay for his 1/1's when he built his set.

Personally, I can't justify spending that kind of money on a baseball card, but if i did, I think I would spend it on something with the Word "Mantle" on it or on a high-grade HOF Rookie card.

I'm curious to see what the 1/1 PSA 10 Rick Wise IA goes for in an hour or so.
  • Dmitri Young must have really wanted that one.

As far as the World Series cards go, the 228, and 230 cards are low pop........224 is semi-low pop. the rest are fairly plentiful and easy to find.

    Joe,

I can pretty safely state that I didn't pay a total of $2200 for all 37 1/1 PSA 9's that I had in my set when I first completed it. About half, I submitted myself and the other half I bought mostly from Steve Pekovich. I saw the Kingman going long - so I killed my snipe bid for $275 (figuring the odds were slim that everyone else would bail before it closed...)

  • Arny. I'm going to build as fast as my finances will allow. I started with a bang buying stuff left and right but I'm probably gonna slow down a bit now unless an unbelievable deal presents itself. I've had pretty good luck finding super high quality raw cards lately so alot of my set may come from submissions. I've got a Henderson, Dietz IA, and a Mays IA that may all pull 9s. If any/all of them do, they will definitely hit ebay with the proceeds helping to further my set.

    Smart move Jason,

If you're not emotionally whetted to having the 9 in your set - definitely sell off to fill 10, 20, 30 (or more) holes. On only very few occasions might that be a bad deal. Good luck!
