You will be waiting a long time for a "good deal" on those last cards.

The dynamic of the 72 Registry has certainly changed and a result the pricing has become increasingly hard to predict. The competition factor has gone to another level.
You could probably "lowball" your way to close to 90 % but it's certainly evident that after that point bargains will not be tolerated especially by those who have already "overpayed".
Granted , the term "overpay" may not be entirely appropriate. A card is usually only worth as much as someone is willing to pay but there are cases when a card is worth as much as someone else is willing to let you have it for.

Whoever said we wash away with the rain ?

In between the time when the card "hoarders" (whether they be low pop cards or not) get bored good deals can be gotten...................and the card "hoarders" DO all get bored eventually............

    Guys,

Thanks for the nice words regarding my 72 set. Its been a labor of love for over 6 years now and I will continue to upgrade and I find reasonably priced 10's and hopefully can pick up the last handful of PSA 9's that I need over the coming years.

I honestly believe that someone will someday overtake me for the 72 top spot. I used to believe that it would be EO. Then Chris Renaud. Larry Mayer is making a nice run at it, but he's working on a lot of different sets - so it will be a while yet. Greg Foster seems to be buying up every 72 PSA 10 in existence - so he might someday topple me. But, at this point I don't worry about competing with anyone because it would just cost me more money. I'll wait for people to lose interest and move on to another set. Then I'll pick up a few more upgrades on the set breakup. Slow and steady wins the race...

I keep a spreadsheet with the set and the stats by series as well as counts. The next PSA 10 that I add will be the 300th in the set. I'm down to 9 PSA 8's in the set. And my weighted GPA in the 3rd and 6th series is over 9.41, while the GPA's for the 1st, 2nd and 4th are below 9.30. All in all, I'd like to see if I can take this to 9.50 before I'm finished.

As far as the Registry HOF goes - not my call... Lot of great sets out there.

A group of my modern cards popped today (which I posted on the board), but no 72s yet. My submission is VERY large. It's hard to say when the 72s will pop.

    Nolan Ryan PSA 10

I believe the last two on EBAY went for around $1800 and $2500.

On another note, I finally added a Vida Blue IA in PSA 8 to my set...........I had to overpay for an off-centered card......OH WELL!!image

    Grades popped:

Got a few low pops that people need but some disappointments as well. The low pops should more than pay for the submission.

    Dave,

I can hear the disappointment in your post. I know you had hoped for better. Glad to hear that you'll be able to cover the costs with the low pops. Nothing worse than getting beaten on two fronts.

    Jami,

I believe that the last Ryan on on eBay was won by me and the price was around $1850. But, I have to tell ya... for 15K Buy It Now, I'm really tempted to downgrade for a slightly more off-centered one!!!

    Frank,
I believe a Ryan 10 sold after yours for around $4,000 and another just sold in the Mile High Auction.

I bid on the second one on ebay in hopes of getting it for around what you paid. I think you were very fortunate on yours. I don't think anyone thought it would ever go that low.

    David,

OUCH ! Do you think you got hammered or perhaps with such a large order you didn't do an extensive screening?
I'm sitting on a couple hundred raw that I think will be at least all 8's and now I'm wondering if should go through again.....

I sent in some beautiful first series 1969's that I checked through a 6x magnifier (I know PSA uses a 10x) thinking they were all locks for 9's... some came back as 6's and 7's. I also got back the nicest looking PSA 4 1970 common you'll ever see. I'm not clueless when it comes to this - I sent in a few cards for Jami and I accurately pre-graded all but two and on those, PSA ended up a grade higher than I expected.

David, I'm sorry about some of those grades. Wow, tough crowd there. I know that you're going to want a good amount for that Stanley to make up for the group, but can you PM me regarding that one?

    Arny,
You remember what you did to me on the McRae I/A card? If you want to make a trade for the Stanley (or the Cash card you need) or buy it directly it will cost you.

My plan is to send all of the low pop 72s to ebay.

Amy, hopefully 8's & 9's on the 72 sets and maybe (your term) snipe a few 10's here & there, sent a few screamers in a while back thought for sure 1 or 2 tens no luck came back 9's. bench & jackson came back 7's. ryan came back an 8. funny the bench & jackson look better. What is the easy way to crack them out of the holder without damaging the card?

There are a few threads about cracking the holders to resubmit. I'll see if I can find one and post a link here.

In regards to my set, I picked up that Houk PSA 7 card. That's a candidate for a resubmit, isn't it? Ralph Houk PSA 7...Possibly an 8?

I need the following in PSA 8....

    #40 - Bob Barton IA
    #150 - Norm Cash
    #228 - WS Game 6 (Have a PSA 7)
    #230 - World Series (Have a PSA 7)
    #292 - Hal McRae IA
    #296 - Dick Dietz IA
    #377 - Terry Harmon
    #385 - Mickey Stanley
    #532 - Fred Kendall (Have a PSA 9oc)
    #533 - Ralph Houk (Have a PSA 7)
#582 - Montreal Expos Team Card (Have a PSA 7)
    #666 - Hector Torres
    #670 - Ken Holtzman (Have a PSA 7)

The Houk card has a funky tilt. I think the 7 NQ is generous. Look at the top vs bottom edges and the boot left corner vs. bottom right. I don't think the card is centered well enough for an 8, although it isa petty card.

The best way I have found to crack graded card cases is with a Dremel rotary tool. It was recommended by a board member and it works great. You can buy one online for about $40 including bits. You use the cutting wheel to cut off the top edge of the holder through the flip. Once you cut off the top edge insert a screw driver into the flip area and twist. It will cause the top plastic pieces to separate. You should be able to gently pull apart the holder. If it is still to tight, gently work your screwdriver around the edge of the holder to cause the glue to separate. It is very easy and there is little to no risk to the card. I would suggest trying it one time with a garbage card to get the feel.

Here's a link to another method link. The disclaimer on the link applies to all methods. You have to be very careful. Even with the Dremel. The cutting blade causes very hot plastic bits to fly around. You should wear goggles to avoid injury to your eyes.

to psa for an upgrade? sounds like cracking open a slab is like sex you can go blind or damage a working body part.

<< <i>The Houk card has a funky tilt. I think the 7 NQ is generous. Look at the top vs bottom edges and the boot left corner vs. bottom right. I don't think the card is centered well enough for an 8, although it isa petty card.

    >>

I was thinking about going for that Houk but I would agree with David in regard to the centering. It seem as though PSA has loosened up on centering but not so much Top to Bottom as Left to Right.
It looks as though the seller sent a boatload of 72's in and most came back as 7's it may speak for the overall quality of the submission.

I guess that when I take my 'Please let it be a PSA 8 colored' glasses that I can see the tilt. Oh well. At least I have a 7 for an affordable amount.

Anyone else out there sending any '72s for submission?

That's a price break? Geez...I can't stand it when a seller tries to fleece you on shipping charges like that. My goodness.

I charge $3 for first graded card and 25 cents for each additional. There's no reason he should charge you that much.

DiamondMan, if you need any of the '72s from my eBay store, I'll give you free shipping on all that you pick up. Or, if you have any that I need, we could trade for those that you need.

    Let me know!

$28.00???? I wouldn't buy them!!! Take the negative feedback..........they will not be around ebay for long if they keep charging S/H charges lto that degree

I would contact them first and explain about how shipping should be handled on EBAY ......................if you do not get the correct response.......let us know....................there is enough buyers on these boards to blackball him right out of ebay..... ( A new thread will be started that says " Don'T buy from this BOZO" etc )

( A new thread)LOL. sending them an e-mail will find out , my fault for not asking for specific s/h charges, will still take the cards even if I don't get a bigger price break, I am only at 109 and the negitive feedback would hurt my rating and sales. time to bite the bullet.

Amy, I'll let you know, do I still get the 20% off & free shipping for mentioning (the Thread) or is this
collusion? love reading some of the old boards. Reminds me of TALK'N Baseball on Sportsnet was a

    Diamondman,

You do what you need to do for your feedback...........but let us know the outcome...............if he charges you that amount ( $28), we do need to send out a warning to the members here........

Remember most ebayers are astute enough to see through negative feedback from one seller.............an explanation of his high shipping charges whether it be a positive, nuetral or negative feedback would be warrented INHO in your feedback.

As he is a new EBAYER, if he continues to charge such outragious S/H fees his negatives (feedback) will start to accumulate.

    Just my honest opinion......

Good eye DiamondMan! I forgot about the deal I was offering to the folks! LOL

Yes, you qualify for the Summer Special of 10% off and the free shipping offer through the end of June. Or, depending on which way you'd like to go, you can go with the Set Registry special of buy 2 'commons' and get the 3rd at 25% off deal that I have ongoing.

I've been going back and forth with this set (I previously posted as kennylow in this thread). I've finally decided to sell off my PSA graded cards in my set, and trying to replace them with raw cards. If anyone is interested in some PSA 8 cards, please let me know. I sold the last two cards that Arnold added to his set, and hopefully can help out others. Prices are ebay level prices. My email is cmoking@yahoo.com, my set on the registry is currently 28th:

    http://www.psacard.com/set_registry/display_cards.chtml?rsetid=57096&alltime=no&rank=28&tied=0&requesttimeout=9999

I only have the PSA 8 cards left, I need to delete the PSA 9 cards in the set - they were sold on ebay tonight.

When I first started this set in Dec 2004, there were three names high on the set registry list with either complete or almost complete sets...................Dave Read, Bill Novick, and Jim Vitale ( jimmy walnutz)...................all three of these 72 set collectors sold off their sets. Many cards from these three sets ended up in my set including many low pop cards.

I find it interesting to note that all three now once again have sets listed in the 72 set registry. ( the Vitale set being perhaps under an alias image)

Bill Novick needs no help.......but if the other two gentlemen need any help in rebuilding their new sets please let me know.

    .......................and WELCOME BACK!

Can't say I blame them, the 72 set has always been like an old friend it doesn't take long to pick up where you left off.

lowsmartmick> "the 72 set has always been like an old friend it doesn't take long to pick up where you left off."

I can attest to that. I've built the set twice in graded form and the second time was quite a bit more fun. At time, I was like an old friend calling me back. Ultimately, by the time I completed it the second time my life and my collecting habits had changed/evolved. I was getting married, so proceeds went toward wedding expenses and a few other things. But no need to worry about me giving it a third go. I'm just not interested in building any large set in graded form again. It's a long, hard road. Rewarding, but tough. I'm focusing on 78-85 Cubs, White Sox, & Bears - PSA9 or better. However, I have recently decided to start a new PSA-graded set. 1980 Burger King Pitch, Hit, & Run. Only 34 cards and seems pretty challenging. Looking forward to it.
