It's amazing how some of those 9s can look better than the 10s, isn't it?

If you put that thing on eBay right now, you'll pull at least $750 for it, I believe. Nice $300 profit for 'flipping' a card in a week, huh? image

I've seen some nice $$$ 'flipping' before, all within a few week time period - I guess it's my turn now. I just happened to get lucky in checking when I did. There's no way this would have lasted long. BTW, how far were you behind me when you saw it.?

Arny, It's simply amazing how some 9's look. I paid over $100 for this (with a 0xxxxxxx cert number to boot, which typically I won't do), but I'm taking the position that the bulls-eye centering might produce the knockout punch needed in obtaining that elusive 10.
  • Options
Probably a couple of hours later.....no real competition for the speed of a mongoose that you exhibited!

That 9 Mattingly with the 0xxxx was graded tougher than the normal standards. I'm sure that you'll have a solid shot at a 10. Good luck!

Saw the post talking about flipping and got a little flipped out...sorry about the blank post...but got to thinkin about the old days when I was a youngster flipping the cards against the wall, playing closest to the wall and it seemed like always losing....oh well, sweet memories. by the way have any of you seen the PSA 10 Ripken that's on ebay now....it's over $200.....WOW!!! I remember recently seeing one sit until the last day with an opening bid of $49.99 and no one bid on it....man has that article helped prices or what!!!

funny thing is, it opened with a BIN of $175............gotta love ebay!!!!!

Bill, it makes me almost want to list the one I have......the only thing stopping me is that I usually have the luck that the next one sells for $25!!......I just keep thinking $200!!! That's 40 cards from the set I can get graded for the price of one....awful tempting...
  • Options
Al, I thought the same thing with my 10. If you really want to sell it, offer it to the 2nd highest bidder for whatever he bid and maybe you can strike a deal! image

I actually get lower grades the more deserate I am to pass the next person on the Set Registry. I start compromising on the edge wear or maybe it isn't THAT off center. Be happy though, I would kill for any of my grades to post.

    Al,
Did you pull these from a factory set(s)? I'm curious if the 8's are due to borderline centering because of the diamond-cut effect. Factory sets are notorious for this - especially the DK's.

Bill, the cards were from factory sets. I also think I was not as observant as I've been......I need to slow down a bit.....I was going to try and get another lot to PSA before the end of the month but think I'll wait now....I'm getting to impatient!!!! at least I got a couple that are low pops....the Blylevan is one I was hoping for a 9 and got it.....and I couldn't believe the two Charlie Lea cards...I thought they would both be at least 9's......go figure!!

I've picked up 5 cards for my Basic set in the last 24 hours and 6 cards for my Master set. I'm now sitting at over 92% complete on the master and over 94% complete on the basic set.

FYI, I haven't heard anything in the last two days about the reweighting. But, I had some decent dialogue before then with BJ. We'll see when things will get finished with the reweighting of the set. image

Arny, there are some of us relatively new and to be honest I don't remember the reweighting.......is there a summary somewhere for the new guys to read???? Is it included somewhere in this thread? thanks al.
  • Options
Al, it's definitely in this thread, but I can't remember at which point. Basically...Ray, RVC, Bill & myself put together some thoughts as to what the cards should be weighted at and I submitted a spreadsheet with our thoughts to PSA. Cosetta responded that BJ was going to correspond with me and we've e-mailed back and forth a couple of times on it already. PSA agrees that the set should be reweighted based on the fact that price changes over time have occurred and some cards are valued higher while some are lower now.

Al - The discussion about reweighting goes almost all the way back to the beginning of the thread if I recall. Maybe like the 3rd or 4th page.
Arny - Thanks for picking up on the reweighting project. I think that ultimately the 84D guys are going to really benefit from changes that correctly reflect the sets components.

I have been a fan of the set since I was a kid. I have to admit I liked the 83 Fleer better at that time since it was the first time I bought a full box at one time. I skipped lunch at school for 2 weeks to do it. When I first saw the 84 Donruss wax pack, I knew it was going to be special. Then I opened it and knew I had a new favorite. I skipped a lot more lunches that year.

    Arny,
It's an outright need. Funny thing as it's a 1/7 but for whatever reason I don't have it. Do you have a 9 of #10 Steel (that's labeled correctly?) If so, maybe we can do the trade/cash thing. I'd be just as happy with a cheaper and nicely centered 9.
  • Options
    ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,246
Bill, I've got the mislabeled 9 of the Righetti. That's why I wanted the 10 Steel. But, go ahead with this one and I'll take the next card that comes along.

    check this out:

I have a mild interest in Krukcards 1984D wax case and wanted more info. Because the description stated the case had a loose or torn flap, I emailed them and asked for pics of all sides of the case, and also if the BIN price would be negotiable. Here's the response from them:

<< <i>Due to time restraints we are unable to add additional pictures on this lot or single card >>

Great - a vague, canned answer on an item priced at $3.5K. As far as I'm concerned now, they can shove that case up their Kruk.
  • Options
    ArnyVeeArnyVee Posts: 4,246
I have picked up a couple of raw sets from Kruk and they haven't been exactly as described. So, I wouldn't be surprised that they'd give a 'canned' response. No personal touch or attention to detail means less repeat customers. I'm sure that I have significantly less traffic and business than them, but I sure have repeat customers!

Over the last week I went through about 3400 84D cards. I found around 200-220 that I'm going to have graded when they have a registry set special again. I've been following this thread and I remembered how much I liked this set way back when so I decided I'll eventually build a reg. set. I bought a raw set and four or five wax boxes between 1984-86. Its funny, back then I never paid a whole lot of attention to centering, didn't really notice it unless it was really bad. But I see what you guys mean by this being a very tough set to build well centered. I lost count of how many off center Rich Gedmans, Dion James, and Sid Fernandez cards I went through. Heck, I couldn't even find a well centered checklist card!

BTW- the first post of this thread is a great one, it lets folks know what some of the toughest cards in the set are right away.

    Stupid list…. Mistlin

    Darin,
Welcome! Glad you've been following the thread and hopefully your name will be 'in lights' on the registry soon. Centering is always a bear: In fact, the raw set that got me started in this whole registry game came from 2 wax CASES back in '84. The best centered of those 2 cases (21,600 cards) would account roughly 80 percent of the 660 card set worthy of psa 9/10 copies based soley on centering - the rest were off enough to qualify for 8's only.

BTW, if you had a submittable #480 Joel Youngblood, you'd make one collector VERY happy. image

    alnavmanalnavman Posts: 4,129 ✭✭✭
Welcome Darin, as noted by Bill the centering is a big issue. I've only been pursuing the set for a few months but it's already driving me crazy...pay special attention to the DK cards, they are tough....also make sure when you send your submission in to state in big letters that the DK's are either the STEEL or STEELE version. As noted several times in this thread PSA mislabels these at times.....

Great to see you are on board, al.
