1978 Topps baseball collectors

Watch out for this buyer honesty2n4u

Buys nothing but PSA 10's and has started a PSA 10 or nothing registry set. Very expensive and very interesting.

    Hi Stingray,
A PSA 10 common depending on the population can go anywhere from $50 to $150 if Guy, myself or the other gentleman wants the card.

The biggest buyers of the 78 PSA 9s and 10s I've had on ebay are spike, soft, jrdolejs, and 910-8937. Are either of these last two guys honesty2n4u?

  • now if we could just get that 70's guy fs to join in the circle would be complete

the nice thing about all of this is that it pulls more cards out of the closet and into plastic.

dang, a little over a week ago there was 3 spiers in 9, after i took a bullet for it at close to a franklin, spikey got the next one for $36, and another is up now, early adopters pay the price, hehe
  • Guy:

I'm here! Just lurking in the shadows.

I must say that I'm really surprised that with the 10 explosion prices are on the rise. Sure, I was one of the guys paying $100 when there were only 50-10's graded, but now it is so much easier now to get a 10 than it was two years ago. It just shocks me to see what they are selling for. I hope the trend continues until November. After the awards I will be closing my set and selling off many of my 10's - that is if I can get these prices for them.

Dan, you seem to be the only one who doesn't understand this. image You said "never" but you'll change because life (and priorities) changes - as you have recently experienced. That's the first step.

By the way, I had never understood the attraction of the 1978 Topps - apart from nostalgia in being the first or last set collected. I had always thought it was the nadir in Topps run of poor quality, poor photography and bad QA that dominates mid-late 70s (don't get on me, softy, those were my collecting years too). Are collectors doing this set because of the deals in comparison to 76 or 77 or 79?

  • Dan - I'm not going to sell all my 78's. In fact, I'm going to keep most of them. It's just that I personally feel that the 10 is overrated. In a number of cases I have 9's that are the same quality as my 10's. If you had the choice of two cards that were equal in all respects and one was $5 and the other was $50 (and you couldn't see the flips), which one would you choose? I guess I've reached the point that if you love the cards, why get stuck on a number? I figure that I could sell a number of 10's that I have 9's of that I like just as well and recover a significant portion of my investment. The true quality of my set wouldn't change. Only the cash in my pocket. I hope this make sense. Frank

That makes a lot of sense to me. PSA 9 in any years would make a nice collection.
  • Steve - In some cases I feel that there are significant differences between a 9 and a 10. For example, the difference between a high-end 10 and a low-end 9, should be fairly easy to see. In this case, I could certainly keep the PSA 10. What I'm talking about is when you get two of the same cards in a box - the vending twin so to speak. Both cards are equally nice and you submit them both. One comes back a 10 and the other a 9. If you can't tell the difference, why not keep the 9? The only reason to keep the 10 would be for set registry ego purposes. What I'm saying here is that if the 10 is nicer, keep it. But if the 10 is not nicer (or is the same), why keep it? Frank

Steve, one thing I DO understand is 1978 Topps. Thank you very much image

    Frank,

Your reasons for wanting to unload the 10's are exactly what I have been doing the past few weeks. I have so many 9's that could be 10's that it is just foolish not to ship out the 10's for the prices they can get right now. Not that I do it with a smile. ALL of these 10's are cards that I have submitted and it is not fun mailing them away. Great price or not.

  • Hey Guys:

Since I saw this thread, I thought I would throw my partial set out there again.

Since I am not home I do not have the complete details of my set, but this is from memory.

Roughly 230-250 cards. If I remember right 35 of which are PSA 10's.

If anyone would be interested in buying the PSA 9's as a lot or the PSA 10's let me know.

Maybe from what you guys have said I should list them on EBAY.

Let me know, if anyone is interested.

    Thanks

    Hi,
I believe after winning the #642 Doyle card last evening, Frank has completed his awesome 78 set. Congratulations from a very envious 78 set owner.

Bill - Thanks for noticing and for your help in getting me there! You are correct. Once I get #642 in my hands the set will be at 100%. I still have some work to do in terms of upgrading all the 8's to 9's and within the 9/10 grade to get the set where I want it, but at least it will be done. Putting these monster sets together in high grade is not an easy thing to do. My hat goes off to all you guys that seek this endevor. Frank

Frank, congratulations! I have been watching and waiting to see when your set hit 100%. Great job and you are right.
Doing a monster set like this is no easy task. I don't care how plentiful or "modern" some say these cards are. Like Spikemax, I am envious of your set.
Although i do not plan on ever reaching your GPA I do plan on completeing the set with a 9.00 minimum.

  • Frank,
Congrats on an awesome set.I had no idea that you were done. The great, quiet, humble guy that you are didnt mention a thing.Knowing what your 75 set is like...I bet your 78s are of the highest quality.
I was looking thru some 78 vending last nite and there really is some very difficult cards in this set. With the added attention and exposure that 78s have been getting lately I bet you see more cards to chose from in the very near future.IMO I think it is great that most dealers think anything past 72s are not worth bothering with. Good luck with your 79s(centering nightmares) and congrats on another fine set.
  • man, no love for the first guy who completed this beast of a set almost a year ago, sigh, its so cold in here
    image
  • i'd also like to add that if it weren't for me and spikey killing each other on these 10's lately, they would be right back where they were before we starting killing each other for them, and don't forget the ol' muskycaptain, he makes honesty4nu look like small potatoes when he's in the game.

As far as the comment on the look of the 78's, i still don't get why it gets dogged on, simple clean design, nice shots, uncluttered front. Way nicer looking than the plain vanilla 79's, the gaudy 75's, the boring 77's and the wanna be 76's. jmho

guy, I would think the flak you take for buying the 10's is well worth being at the lofty heights that you are! Don't mind me, I'm just jealous.

As far as the "look" of these cards, it is laughable that anyone thinks these cards are any worse looking than any of the 60's issues. Its all about the dollar with many collectors and the style and make up of cards look so much better if the bottom line commands more ...

Do you think that would be a consensus? I had never realized that the 78 would stand out among those years but as evident (without look at the Registry), that seems to be the case. That's interesting.

I'm a fan of the '78s....very clean design and uncluttered look, yet not boring. I've always enjoyed the look of them.

Plus, the Murray and the Molitor/Trammell rookies always made me go after the set when I was younger.

  • Although I'm not collecting the set yet, I add my approval vote to the 1978 set. I have a couple of hundred cards my youth and have always thought it was one of the best post 1972 sets. Once I'm finished with some of my current projects, I might just try a PSA 9 set. I might just see how I fare with an all self submitted set.

  • Good morning all:

Thank you all for your emails thus far regarding my partial set. Since I am away from home working on the road, I didn't think I had any info about my set. Turns out it was on my laptop. Unfortunately, it looks like the wireless card in my laptop went, or it could be the hotel as well?

So, here is some info that I remember from looking at my set the other night.

231 total cards, which is just over 31% of the set.

Of which 35 of the are PSA 10's Several being low pop cards, and even 3 of them being 1 of 1.

All the rest of them are PSA 9's. every cards is NQ.

    So I hope this helps.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, I may end up putting some of the PSA 10's on EBAY. I have not decided as of yet.

Great post, gotta love the 78s. I need to pass the collection plate around so you guys can reimburse me for all the money I have recently spent with BBE for unopened 78s; its all of your faults. image

Speaking of the Molly rookie, what did the last PSA 10 sell for? Anyone know? I can't recall if I have ever seen a 10 for sale.

Mefer, what was wrong with the 78's? OC?
  • MeferMefer Posts: 1,156 ✭✭✭
Hey Gaspipe, the 78s I purchased from BBE were fantastic. The cards I pulled from wax were very clean. I also bought a vending box that yielded a killer, no smudge Molly rookie that is well centered. I am sending the Molly in, together with other 78s from my purchase (plus some I had hanging around) to PSA this month under the current special. Overall, the 78s were very nice and clean. I think I echo the sentiments of others who have bought 78s from BBE. My point is that I would not have purchased them were it not for the "hysteria" created on this board by certain members. Those certain members, and I know who you are, need to reimburse me for these expenses I would not have otherwise incurred. image Seriously, 78 is my favorite year too. It was the year I started collecting.

All this talk on 78s had me looking over on Ebay at some of them. They are a nice simple, clean design. So I think I am going to have to buy a couple of them and check them out. After seeing Softparades Munson, it started to peek my interest.

I have 8 vending boxes. I opened 1 and pulled out the stars. Stargell,Rose,Yaz,Sutton and a few others, all came back 9, except the Yaz was an 8, and the Sutton a 10. I've been considering sending a bunch in for grading.

Its a great set. Large photos, nice mix of portraits and action shots, cool manager cards. I would have liked a bigger World Series subset and more League Leader cards, but the trend to fewer of those cards had already started.

I'm curious to know if a difference can be seen in cards that were double prints.

I have a question. I was looking at my SMR and was wondering why they chose 1978 to start giving pricing on PSA 10s?

  • gaspipe26gaspipe26 Posts: 1,614 ✭✭✭
The SMR always started 10 pricing in 78. Dont know why.

I had bought a rak case and sold off one box. The 2nd box I opened and pulled a beutiful PSA 9 Murray along with countless other 9's and 10's. The 3rd box I just busted and awesome again. So many 10 possibilities. Imagine my frustration with these two Murray's I pulled with the same EXACT centering as the PSA 9 from the previous same case.

Yep, this sucked but thats the way it goes. The first Murray I pulled from the case was pristine. These other two I just couldn't believe it because each players cards were very identical throughout the case. Onward and upward ......

MMM, that is odd, it was there when I did my preview of the message. Anyways it is just a common, but I can not wait to see it in person. I might pick up a few here and there, but not heavily.
