Replacement coin:

CAC gave a thumbs down to my recently submitted 1872 Shallow N graded PCGS 65RB. Without asking, I know why - it’s more properly graded BN than RB. While I still like it, I’m going to sell it; today’s coin is the replacement. While the pics are good, the coin is even nicer in hand & oh so close to full RD!

Just picked up this hammered 1864-L cent in Orlando. It’s a Snow-19, with minor re-punching in the date, heavily clashed reverse (but not obverse 🤷🏻‍♂️) and a near 90 degree rotation on the reverse (the shield points to about 9:30 on a clock). It’s graded 65 BN, and has a CAC. It wasn’t expensive, and I like it 👍🏻

Nice find. Looks like a shallow N variety too, LOL!

It’s a distinctive clash of the feathers I think, or face and headdress.

Without seeing it in hand, I would say clashing. The 1864 IHC’s often were clashed, some heavily. And that’s along with other “problems” - incomplete diamonds, flat tips, carbon, etc. That includes the 1864’s after the “L” was added, but fortunately less so.
@jfriedm56’s coin you were asking about is a beauty, despite the clashing. JMO….

1864 was an interesting year for IHC’s as there were 3 different types:

This was the final year for the Copper Nickel design. While there’s no clashing on this example, there are early signs of die deterioration.

The CN was replaced by the “Bronze” or “No L”. While a nice example, the above coin exhibits some tip weakness & reverse clashing. Not pronounced, though, like so many.

Here’s a clean one - very well struck; no clashing.

RD ones are a little tough. This example has obvious clashing on the inside of the reverse leaves, a frequent area of occurrence. The rest of the coin is nicely struck

This is the S-1 variety of the “L” version with a pronounced repunched date & clashing in front of the portrait.

Another “L” example. This one has it all - the reverse clashing within the right side leaves, another running through the C in CENT (another frequent location), & a few die cracks that help make this S-5 variety distinctive. Still, the tips & diamonds are strong; with the contrasting toning, it has attractive eye appeal.

Only one left!

I just acquired this one today - it’s the very elusive S-9, a 3* variety. This coin is the next to last one I needed to complete the Registry set, “IHC Complete Variety Set”, a 185 coin marathon! Once attributed, I’ll add it to the set, with the 1863 S-20 being the last one needed to complete it.
The primary feature of the S-9 is the pronounced repunching of all 4 digits in the date. The “1” actually shows triple repunching. This example has superb eye appeal & is nearly full RD.
When added to the PCGS pop, there will be a total of 10 - 8 BN & 2 RB. This piece will be the highest graded, alongside a 65BN.

Nice toner:

Another pickup from last week’s WFOM. 1888’s are not easy dates, but are still available. Might have graded 66 if not for the mark on the neck under the jawline.

New arrival:

MS67RD CAC! While the PCGS pop is given as 18/2, I have to believe the “18” is inflated due to upgrade attempts. This coin is stunning in hand & essentially can’t be improved upon; it’s hard to believe either of the 67+RD’s are that much better, if at all!
