Somehow, I managed to be on these boards for the last year without ever opening this thread up. I know, I know, how could that happen? Now that I have spent the last hour looking at these incredible IHCs and giving myself carpel tunnel from hitting the "Like" button over and over, I have come to the conclusion that @asheland can either pay for my medical expenses to carpel tunnel surgery or, instead, can simply mail me that incredibly attractive PCGS VF25 1877 that has been posted in this thread.

Just let me know what you want to do, @asheland! :)

    Haha. :pB)
I can electronically mail this to you…

@redraider: great coin! Curious about the metallurgical test: did you do that before or after going to PCGS? Are you going to attempt to designate it as a J-356a? Love these coins with distinct obv/rev contrast!

@Copperindian: Metlaergic testing was done in the NGC slab and was not accurate. It was cracked out and tested again and tested as bronze. It then went to PCGS (with the metallurgic testing results) where the testing results were ignored and went into a Copper-Nickel holder.

Here is the testing results. Interesting to see more than trace amount of silver and gold in the result.

The mint did a lot of funky stuff in 1864 in testing new metal compositions, so who knows what this one really is.

    That’s very interesting!

    Feeding the toner “addiction”:

One of 8 sharing the top pop. Really nice eye appeal & remarkable contrast between the two sides.

I find collecting toned proof IHC's can be way more challenging than RD IHC's. Way too many levels of RD that are only color. Color is truly special. But I do admire your dedication to all varieties which requires true intent. A toned proof set of IHC's would be like a walk in the park for you, and very gratifying as well.

    Another one “down”:

(slab shot taken before the attribution was added).

The 1888 S-27 is #178 of the 185 needed for the IHC Complete Variety Set. It’s an absolute beast & I’ve occasionally had regrets about ever trying to achieve it. But, with “only” 7 to go, it’s become possible. I’ll have another one to add soon: a 1903 S-7 in PCGS 62BN. The seller is traveling, but I’m all too glad to work within his timetable. Then, I’ll have 6 remaining. It will be a tough 6 for sure!

Love all the busy goings-on with this one:

Die cracks galore, extra outlines that look like doubling on the letters & feathers + lots of RD on the rev of this CACG pop 1/0 66BN. There’s also a PCGS pop 1/0 in 66BN, but I have no intentions to cross it. I’ve come to like the “integrity” of the CACG grade.

    A doily for a Sunday:

I don’t recall ever posting this one. It’s not designated (& won’t be as long as I own it), but it’s the very tough 1867/67. The S-1 sticker designates the variety. Hard to tell from the woodgrain, but it’s close to full RD.

Edit: I neglected to add this, which nicely shows the overdate. It’s so pronounced, it can be seen with the naked eye:

I love that! With the Eagle Eye sticker, and the S1 as far as I’m concerned, that’s as good as any designation that PCGS would put on there…

    Bad buy:

I bought this coin years ago when I was in process of completing a mostly RD Registry IHC set. The good news is I didn’t pay up for it. The bad news is just about everything else. It’s really a 95% RD & probably should be in a RB holder. Eye appeal is mediocre. It won’t qualify for the EEPS nor green bean. Worst of all - I still own it!
This is a case in point for me not following Terry’s (@asheland) good parameters. His coin above is a nice true RD with no issues. I would buy his coin 10 times out of 10 today instead of mine!

I noticed that 1877 on GC, too, and expect it to receive spirited bidding.
