Happy Saturday to all -
I started collecting Capped Bust dimes over 25 years ago and I am still going strong. When I decided to collect CBD, at the first show a dealer showed me this coin and I said WOW! this is going to be an easy to put a great set together. Boy oh boy, I was wrong! I haven't found another one that looked like this one- This is my favorite CBD -believe it or not, its only a 62 and has deep prooflike surfaces. At first glance, you would say its a proof & at least 2 grades higher.
Missed last weeks postings but here today. There has been a lot of 90% hitting BST lately. It gave me the itch to take out some Walkers and handle them. Man I wish I was around when these were in circulation. The coin designs back then were just so cool. Had to play with some raw SLQ's too.
The most underrated IHC is the subject of today’s post. And, a departure from the Saturday red eye with a Nespresso Napoli. Very similar!
The 1864 No L aka Bronze is very common in the IHC series. They’re easy to find in MS & available in all color grades. Why underrated then? One, they’re not so easy to find nice. Many are plagued with clashing, strike thrus, smooth/flat tips & blurred diamonds. Some with all 4 of these characteristics. Two, they’re actually a one year type that not many collectors recognize. Three, JMO, a nice one with none of the above traits is underpriced. Todays example is such a coin. Pics aside, it’s a full blown RD with all the qualities one should want in this type. It also has nice eye appeal as a bonus.
It’s a favorite of mine in the IHC series; there’s even some rare & interesting varieties in this one year type. Someday I’ll post pics of the dozen or so I have collected, which includes these varieties & all three color types.
Happy sippin’ Saturday everyone!
@divecchia beautiful all gold group shot reminded me of one that me and @FlyingAl took one day when we laid out a bunch of coins for individual photos. Happy Sat Gents!
Got my Dunkin’ and enjoying what IMHO is the most charming of the Vermont coppers, the Ryder-4 Vermontis. Slightly annoyed that PCGS encapsulated it with the legend at the top, but I won’t let it ruin my Saturday!

Your coin was probably straight when it was encapsulated and then rotated in the slab. Sometimes you can tap the corner of the slab on a hard surface and the coin will rotate back to its proper orientation.

While I extensively collect IHC’s, the FE series is my real passion. This coin is BEAUTIFUL in hand. I have other 1857’s higher graded (one a 66+), but this coin is separated from the group. It’s certainly imperfect with the strike showing weakness in the upper obv & corresponding lower rev. There’s very cool clashing right under the eagle’s beak (maybe it bit off more than it could chew)? Finally, there’s what looks like a “pin” being carried in the right wing (for protection)? I hope everyone has an enjoyable Saturday!
@GuzziSport I'm glad you joined us last Saturday and have posted a few on our great Saturday Morning thread. And yes, I see all 3 of your forum posts are here, for a total of 3 very interesting coins! All quite lovely pieces indeed!
Nothing really new to show, but this is one of the newest additions to the group, which I was lucky enough to win from the Paul Gerrie collection this summer.

1819/8 O-106 (106.1) P55cac
ex-Gerrie, ex-Link, ex-Davignon, ex-Prouty
From Sheridan Downey's MB#46, where Gerrie bought the coin; "Gehring found the coin in Heritage’s 1994 ANA Sale, lot 5360, where offered raw as “MS 60.” Keith Davignon picked it up during my sale of the Prouty Collection at the 2000 Philadelphia ANA, later passing it to Charles Link (who sold it to the consignor). Silver-grey toning is clearly original. On the reverse, a toning streak runs across the lower right quadrant. The surfaces are immaculate. Nice coin, great provenance! This is the only R.4 among six 1819/8 Overton varieties."

If you want to rotate your coin back into position in a slab and you don't have an electric toothbrush, ask your wife if you can borrow BOB (Battery Operated Boyfriend). That may also work.

Thank you for the kind words, sir. I recently raided my SDB so I have a few of my favorites on hand until Monday, when they go back “in the vault”.
I’ve always taken the approach of “find the best dealers, and nice coins will follow…” in building my holdings, and I think it has served me well.
I appreciate the forum, lots of good content here.

Nice one @GuzziSport Welcome to the fold!
Four raw coins back from PCGS this week (last night) from my ANA Show submission. Very happy with the grades I got overall (three 58's and a 55)
This 1814 O-104a was the prize.
Can't complain with this 1827/6 O-101 either

“New” Territory(Al): Ahh Saturday’s here & so is the Red Eye!
Bechtlers are generally available but not like this one! Just acquired the example here - a G$1 (1842-50) PCGS AU58 A.Bechtler “27.G.21.C.”
Many were struck on well worn dies; not this one as it’s clearly a EDS example with exceptional luster & extraordinary eye appeal.
Could it grade a 61/62? Maybe, but it really doesn’t matter. The TV is a bit lighter than the coin in hand, but fairly represents it.
I’ve always wanted to own a Bechtler & here it is! Hard to imagine I could have done any better.
