I was a bit impaired today but managed to remember this auction in time and even win it.
From what I can see, I like the surfaces of this CC coin. Many show signs of corrosion. This coin looks like a VG8. I'm hoping the color is somewhere between these two pairs of images.

One of the most common dates but this one is a perfect original XF45. It should cross to PCGS XF45. We'll find out.

Why does it seem you can find these coins in vf-to ef with no problems and I can't seem o find a AU-MS without problems?

Good luck on the cross overThanks, I'll actually crack and submit raw rather than cross over but I expect an XF45. If you trust yourself, it's cheaper to do it that way.
As far as finding them, I check ebay and all the major dealers/auctions almost every day, so I see hundreds of coins a day usually.
A quick ebay search on AU53 came up with a few nice ones like this one.

I to check every day,Yeah, PCGS/CAC will definitely narrow the choices. I look for nice original coins and if they're raw or NGC/ANACS etc., I have them graded. I'm not a fan of CAC and have them reholdered if there's a sticker. Some of my coins are CAC but no sticker.

Great looking 1856 quarter! I wouldn't hold my breath hoping for a crossover to PCGS XF45 however.

I was able to pick up this stunning proof from the Stack's and Bowers auction last August. Looking at D.L. Hansons 1890 Proof Registry Set he upgraded to a PR68 DCAM, so this is his hand me down coin from that set.

There's nice toning contrast but it has extensively etched fields, and hairlined surfaces. It seems a lot of CC coins come with notable environmental damage to some degree. This raw coin came in a soft flip with some whitish residue on the plastic. The photos hid the environmental damage. Most of the photos were juiced.
I don't like returning coins. I need to go shopping at another FUN show.

It was a poor photo. I needed to see the coin in-hand to confirm what I thought I saw in the coin based upon their photos. I've had to return a more than a few coins the past few years because of badly misleading photos. I need to hit more shops, shows, and reputable dealers and stop collecting dangerously.

It's really getting difficult finding problem free coins. Even TPGed coins! Have to have both eyes wide open and a loupe

VF20 upgrade for my F15. A top 10 rarity in the series. It's not much of an upgrade but gets me further toward my goal of VF minimum for every coin. I don't have it in hand yet but I suspect that it's been cleaned sometime in the past and retoned like many of these are.

I saw the nice circ cameo look, and then saw the diebreak through the D. I had to have it.

It may not be, but the largely uniform toning with lighter spots in recessed areas (around the eagle) make me think it might be.

Every now and then, a really neat coin comes along on eBay. Tonight, it was this ultra-crusty GEM AG3 early die state 1855/854 with great color and hardly a hairline. $48 BIN or BO.

XF45 upgrade replaces my F12. Most of these 40's Philly issues are tough.

I agree Don, none of the Philadelphia quarters from the 1840's are common.

This has been a very exciting and anxious week for me as I had to wait three days for this coin to arrive sight unseen. Three hours of sleep in two nights. It was a dream to even attempt to get a 78-S, and now it's sitting on my desk, no different from the other coins. I need a nap.
