Today was an unexpectedly great morning for coins. Had a friend call me to meet at the flea market to look at a collection he wants to sell. He buys estates and calls me whenever he has coins. Sometimes it’s a handful of silver or medals, but I never know what I’ll see.
When I get there at 8 and say “let’s take a look” he says that I’ll have to take it home and get back to him, and that there’s more.
Well I’m still doing my Saturday morning estate sale routine myself, but I can’t wait to get home, get a cup of coffee, and go through this tote of coins
I have these Civil War tokens waiting for me at the Po this morning. I hadn’t been able to add a token to this set in 2 years and now half a dozen in one go! When it rains it pours!
I used to enjoy the estate sales.
Everything here now is a tag sale.
All the local auctioneers have coin guys that they call immediately if anything numismatic shows up.
I don't make the list because I won't buy it all. 95% is junk that I don't have time for.

Cherry picked this off Ebay this week. Usual Crappy eBay Pictures. However I could see the reverse date crack which is the key marker for Stage C of this variety. It's RPM 1 and worth considerable more than the $36 I paid for it.

Since Im neither around coffee or coins at the moment, here is an interesting item found on the net:
This battered $20 bill was with D.B. Cooper as he jumped into the dark, rainy sky from the Boeing 727 he hijacked on November 24, 1971.
It was found in 1980 by a kid digging near the Columbia River on a camping trip. About six thousand dollars in various degrees of decomposition were pulled from the sand.
The FBI confirmed by the serial numbers that they were part of the $200,000 in ransom money.
The kid retained some of the money after a legal battle, and he had the fragments certified by our host. Due to the popularity and mystery around D.B. Cooper, these things go for big money. Even tiny fragments of currency. I'd love to own a nice example one day, and this one is about as good as it gets.

Earlier this week I finally got my sense of taste back. Whole crew except for little dude got the Covid couple weeks back. Recovered fine in about 5 days. I’m vaccinated and boosted so that helped. Only weird after effect was loss of taste about 90%.
To celebrate or perhaps as a remembrance I bought a copper Covid 19 coin. Very nice reasonable price. 2 for $5. Free shipping.
The spot is a shadow, maybe. Both sides very clean

Wanted to share this PF64RB CAM 1898 1c with you guys.
I'm finally cashing in big time on a few years worth of cherrypicks, and I've had a few coins on my list that I really started looking hard for. A Proof Indian was on that list, and I've had some trouble finding a nice example for years (though my focus was not really on them nor was my budget high enough to get me a good coin.) I'm thinking I'm also going to consolidate into a box of 20 (maybe a few minor low cost exceptions or an exception set (36-42 Proof 25cs). For most people, this would be a huge deal but I maybe have $500 in inventory that isn't part of the box of 20. I intend this will be one of those 20 coins, and I think this thread is the perfect place to share it. Here it is!
Now, if you're as good as I know you are, you're probably all thinking two letters and two numbers: MS70. It comes together with blue Indians.
Here's my reply to that. I've read every thread I could find on the topic, and I've developed my own opinion. I'll try to detail it out here.
There are generally two stances on the topic:
1) MS70 only removes surface contamination, revealing natural blue color.
2) MS70 causes the blue color.
There are variations of these, but not many. The most common variation is similar to my stance here:
1) MS70 can cause a blue color, but not always. It must have a specific type of coin with the proper surface state to cause a blue color. The blue can also occur naturally, and this is seen frequently in untouched collections. Such an example is the Millholland Collection, where several blue Indian proofs and one 2c piece appear deep blue. The collection is quite literally the poster child for unmessed with original.
It is notable that every single Proof Indian in the Millholland Collection was partially blue, and every coin but two had at least one side majority blue.
In my opinion, I really don't care if this proof is a MS70 coin. Here's why:
1) Do I think I could tell the difference between a natural and MS70 coin? No.
2) Do I think PCGS/NGC could tell the difference? Nope.
3) What about CAC? Not them either.
4) Rick Snow and his Eagle Eye sticker that the forum almost unanimously said was better than CAC for this series and @winesteven wisely considers to be a qualifier for his exceptional Indian set? Probably not - but he also takes the stance that MS70 doesn't cause blue on Indians (he says it simply reveals it).
So if the foremost experts in this kind of grading can't tell, then we either have to throw out every blue proof original or not or just enjoy them for what they are. CAC threw out the whole bunch, and yet these proofs bring substantial premiums in the market, which clearly decides that these coins are indeed market acceptable, whether you or I like it.
I think we sometimes overestimate originality. There aren't many truly original coins out there. Consider the original thread that was here this week - not many of those were original. Given, the term "original" might have been misunderstood by a large chunk of posters .
There's also a chance this proof is entirely original - I'd have no idea how to tell for certain. NGC didn't have an issue with it. If you simply gave me this coin and told me nothing about MS70, I'd unhesitatingly call it original. The coin has a great "skin" to it, and the toning disappears to a rich brown unless it's in the light. It has some great elevation chromatics, and looks exactly like the proofs out of the Millholland Collection and Eliasberg sets. It's exactly what I'd expect for a coin our of one of the blue proof hoards of the early 1900s.
It's also exactly what I wanted with a Proof Indian. Great color, no annoying spots, and good deep mirrors with some orange peel. These things are dang near impossible to find nice these days, and I wasn't gonna settle.
@Jzyskowski1 - glad you are feeling better. I also got Covid a few weeks back and am still not quite right. I still feel like I have a mild cold, lack energy and am constantly congested. The stuff is no joke.
Last night I was goofing off on Ebay and ended up winning a couple modern dollar proofs on the cheap! I mean really cheap, as I paid less than $12 for BOTH of them (plus $10 shipping).

There are a lot and I mean a LOT of copper cents being toned in the holder now. Buyer beware.
@FlyingAl That is just a jaw dropping, gorgeous coin no matter how you look at it. In general, I am not a fan of rainbow toning, however, I am a huge fan of purple/blue toning on copper. Maybe it's because purple is my favorite color? I don't know, but I know what you mean, and fully appreciate your research into the matter, but in the end, if you love the coin, that's all that matters, and that IHC is absolutely beautiful!
That's a beautiful cent! @FlyingAl As you stated, Blue is a controversial color, for many reasons, but that coin appears to me to be one to cherish. The way the color lays based on your images (which are awesome as always), makes it very desirable in my eyes.
Here's a new arrival ... she's a little whiter than I like, but as a late state O-108a with all the reverse cracks and chips, I'm happy to have her. I didn't expect to win her, but my check bid held (it doesn't appear to have been a well attended or watched auction, and most stuff was not like this).

This morning with my coffee hanging out with this lovely 1946 walker graded 66 by NGC. It’s a pretty cool coin that comes to life when hit with the light.
