I have seen multiple stories and videos of us being laughed at. I saw the McVay thing. He is right, but I think it is ironic for the Rams to laugh when they traded away so many 1st round picks. That being said, it is still laughable. I get it. Please, someone let me know when anyone calls Belichick out on this. Did he do it to spite Kraft for saying publicly that we need a good draft? Why did he make this pick? Please tell me why? ? ?
After having some time to think about the pick I'm not going to just assume it was a bad choice because I wanted to see Bill grab that Geogria LB Dean instead. We've seen similar reactions when BB used high picks on Logan Mankins and Sebastian Vollmer, who were both expected to go 1-2 rounds later but turned out to be studs for this team at that position. A few days ago I also read that Dante Scarnecchia still has a hand in helping BB scout for offensive linemen so I'm not too worried about picking this guy where they did.
My ultimate hope for the first was to see Bill trade back twice if possible and accumulate as many Day two picks as possible so coming out of the first with a potential starting guard plus an extra 3rd & 4th was a decent haul in the end, imo.
I don't question the player, just the draft spot. The only justification for this if they were trying to trade back a second time, couldn't find a trade partner, and valued Strange over any defensive players left. But still, I think they should have picked a defensive player and taken their chances that Strange would be available in the 2nd. or even 3rd. lol

We got our wideout... Tyquan Thornton from Baylor. 6'-2' and runs a 4.28 40 time. For comparison, our speed guy Kendrick Bourne runs a 4.68 40 time.
Now BB needs to start drafting defense.

I think the Cole Strange reach drama is really so overblown due to McVay's reaction. NFL.com's site had him as the 8th highest rated offensive lineman projected to go in Round 2 and he was the 8th O-lineman taken in the draft just a few picks before the start of round 2.

I read that his 40yd time was one of the best ever.
For more comparison:
Randy Moss ran a 4.25
Tyreek Hill ran a 4.29
Deion Sanders ran a 4.27
(don't know why these weren't considered for the other list below)
These are supposedly the "official" Combine fastest 40 times ever:
No. 1: John Ross, 4.22 seconds in 2017
No. 2: Kalon Barnes, CB, 4.23 seconds in 2022
No. 3: Chris Johnson, RB, 4.24 seconds in 2008
No. 4: Rondel Melendez, WR, 4.24 seconds in 1999
No. 5: Dri Archer, RB, 4.26 seconds in 2014
No. 6: Tariq Woolen, CB, 4.26 seconds in 2022
No. 7: Jerome Mathis, WR, 4.26 seconds in 2005
No. 8: Marquise Goodwin, WR, 4.27 seconds in 2013
No. 9: Stanford Routt, CB, 4.27 seconds in 2005
No. 10: Henry Ruggs III, WR 4.27 seconds in 2020
Thornton's career will in all likelyhood end up closer to these JAGs above but I'm cool with seeing if some elite speed to can find a place in their offense.
Overall I'm mostly fine with who they drafted. They got faster at the skill positions, added three big fatties for the OL and two corners for depth. I was hoping to see a LB or two somewhere in the mix but they did grab two LBs in the previous draft that ended up on IR for the season so we'll see how that goes with them in camp. The QB pick seemed like a head scratcher but that pick tells us that likely one of Hoyer or Stidham may not be back, possibly even both.
...
As many complaints as I have with our drafting, I know that we have hit on a lot. Belichick struggles in round 2, struggles with high wr picks, etc. We've hit on a lot of lower picks. That link wasn't directed at you or anyone,I just came across it a few mins ago.
I honestly think too many fans in general, especially Fantasy Football fans, get way to caught up on who gets drafted where. That number you get drafted at is only relevant in regards to your contract totals once the draft is over and at that point its just can the guy or play or not?
I agree BB has blown plenty of picks, like every GM has, but I think our fans in particular (again not directed at you, this is directed mainly at the Patspulpit site that i used all weekend to check out picks) think that if Bill doesn't draft their guy at a certain number then its either a reach or just a bad pick. Reading mock drafts and watching 30 second video clips of players don't make people draft gurus lol.
We all know Bill likes to gamble in the draft and accumulate numerous picks to move around. Some don't get moved and end up on players who amount to nothing, again this happens with all teams.
I looked at this as, our needs going in were: WR/OL/CB/LB in no particular order. We came out of the draft with:
three OL
the fastest WR
the fastest RB
two CBs w/one considered the best punt returner in college football last season
likely our backup QB for the next few years
No LBs (but I forgot we had two from last draft yet to play, three if you count Jennings)
I would have loved to seen more defense but looking at the overall picture BB wanted to get faster on offense and beef up their OL. No matter who was drafted or where, we're probably still going to have a very stout defense and we'll only go as far as Mac takes us.
Good insight @erikthredd Regarding this pick in particular, he moved back to gain value, but then took a guy who most likely would have been available in the 2nd. I've read all the stuff saying some people had high grades on Strange, but I honestly think it was a mistake. You could have had him later, and capitalized on moving back by taking a LB there. Nonetheless, I get your point. Belichick does the draft his way, and there is too much complaining about it. But in this case I believe it's warranted. You don't take a guard there unless he is a guard who can also play tackle, in my opinion. Yes, you can take an elite guard higher. But at that spot, after moving down, I don't like it. My prediction .. he will be a great player for us. In the end, that's all that matters

I still go back to nfl's website had him ranked as the 8th best offensive lineman in the entire draft projected in the 2nd round and when picked at 29 he was the 8th Olineman taken in the draft just a few picks before the 2nd round.
He was the highest rated OL on the board at the time and if McVay doesn't throw out the #104 there likely would be much less complaints on where he went. With Wynn's name being on the trading block this offseason, Strange may end up as their future Left Tackle.
I’ve never seen him play but I’m guessing that cutting Stidham after drafting Zappe likely saves some money. I think I f Stidham had any trade value he’d probably be gone by now. Hoyer just signed a 2yr/4m deal w/3mish guaranteed so if I had to guess it’s Stidham gone.

If Belichick picked him with plans to not sign Wynn and move him, I'd like the pick more. I get what you are saying about how he is ranked. But I still think he probably would have been there. And even if he wasn't, so be it.

I totally agree, my gif above said it all lol. I would rather have seen defense there, same with that 2nd RB pick although it was pretty late in the draft. That first RB feels like a possible future replacement for James White but grabbing a 2nd RB after just drafting Stevenson not to long ago made no sense.
Normally I wouldn’t post in a Patriots post. I have nothing against NE. No hatred. I just want to share my thoughts on my decision to pick the Patriots under 8.5 wins.
These are the first 6 games on their schedule starting with Miami in Miami.
Dolphins
Steelers
Ravens
Packers
Lions
Browns
Pretty tough start. Last year 2-4. I see a 2-4 start again this season.
W.C.Fields "I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.

I think that we see at least a 3-3 there but probably 4-2.
Dolphins: Tough game on the road
Steelers: BB has owned Mike Tomlin teams and add in that Pitt is starting a young QB
Ravens: For someone who hasn't been a fan of Lamar Jackson I don't see what you're seeing in a Ravens win in NE
Packers: This will be a tough game no matter where its played
Lions: worst team in football
Browns: Watson is the X-factor but will he even be on the field this day?
I'm not even sure that that Miami week one game is a loss either not with Brian Flores and all of his knowledge of NE's inner workings gone. In his the three seasons in Miami he was 4-2 against NE, in Miami's three seasons before that they were 2-4 vs NE. Go back farther and NE was even better.
@thisistheshow said:
The Pats will start at least 3-3.
The Bills will start 0-1
It’s a distinct possibility that both of these predictions are correct. The Bills won’t go undefeated. But unlike last year I predict they will win the games they should. I hope they learned that lesson last year from the fiasco in Jacksonville.

Be ready for what happens , win or lose. We all know that the first week isn't the SB, but there will possibly be over-hyped, or severe blowback. Of course there are other scenarios....a close loss, or an ugly win.
My prediction is that in the worst case scenario, by the end of this season, the pundits are talking about whether or not Belichick can put together the right team to take advantage of Mac.

Here we go! Pre-season game 1 for the Pats tonight! Are you guys looking for anything specifically?
None of the regulars will be playing, I'm honestly curious how the coaches handle the basics of running both sides of the ball

...
I've read the negative reports about camp, specifically the offense. @erikthredd already talked me off the ledge and I feel a bit better. I definitely am hoping for clarity regarding who is calling plays and if there are too many cooks in the kitchen or what. And even though it's only the first pre-season game and it's not many starters starting, I still want to see continuity and smooth execution and a lack of mistakes. I really felt that we were uncharacteristically sloppy last year.

Just read that James White is retiring. That's too bad I was hoping that he could fill the same role for Mac as he did for Brady while our offense takes time to figure things out.
I also read that Mac and most of NE's starters aren't expected to play tonight. This feels like it will be a "get to know all of the new guys" type of game. I'm looking forward to seeing how vets Mack Wilson & Jabril Peppers look in a BB defense. Also some rookies on both sides of the ball with the two Jones at cornerback plus Strong & Thronton supposedly the the two fastest players at their positions coming out of the draft.
I do want to see how the offensive play calling goes but with Mac and most if not all of the starters not playing, I don't know how much we can take away from in this game.

At least football is finally back!
....
Even though it is not the starters, with all of the talk about change and possible lack of execution on offense, I think we can take some things away from this game. I want to see us trending in the right direction in terms of executing the little things. I'd like to see a lack of confusion. Like you said, the offensive play calling. And I feel as though our defense needs to look better than their offense.

So Bill trades back from 21 to 29 and gains a 3rd(#94) and 4th(#121) only to then draft a guard Cole Strange who was projected to go in the 3rd.

Edited due to autocorrect
How does everyone/anyone feel about our QB pick? I think we had other needs. If anything, Mac can use tutelage from veterans.
I know you called him out potential backup @erikthredd

And even if he wasn't, so be it.
...
I just feel that we have too many needs to use that pick as solely a way to save money. I don't want it to look like I'm just arguing with you, it's just that I was so happy with last year's draft...
Im sorry are you saying they paid hoyer ? Thats worse than paying matt slater
Hoyer
Is stidham still alive ?
They re-signed him back in free agency, you gotta stop listening to the the nitwits and start paying attention to the updates.
I kid but yeah, one of them is likely not sticking around.

"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling.

The Pats will start at least 3-3.
The Bills will start 0-1
...
Why not? You are more than welcome here. I enjoy your input.

This would be pretty interesting to see BB eventually retire from coaching football then taking over as coach of the Cannons Lacrosse team of the Premier Lacrosse League. They play their home games at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy,MA.

Other than trading N'Keal Harry to the Bears for a future 7th rounder, there hasn't been much Pats related news lately heading into training camp.

Mac Jones is not Brady, he is not going to progress the ineptitude of the skill players on offense.
We will be fortunate to finish 9-8
Obviously I’m hoping for better but I’m just not seeing it
My prediction is that in the worst case scenario, by the end of this season, the pundits are talking about whether or not Belichick can put together the right team to take advantage of Mac.
Here we go! Pre-season game 1 for the Pats tonight! Are you guys looking for anything specifically?
None of the regulars will be playing, I'm honestly curious how the coaches handle the basics of running both sides of the ball
Camp has been a crap show from what I'm reading
My expectations are very low
But I will be rooting for them as you know
Just read that James White is retiring.
