Grade Poppage Thread (Through-Date Estimation)

MitchandrsnMitchandrsn Posts: 25

I've seen a smattering of posts or comments in other threads explaining when their submissions have been received and subsequently graded, but I thought it may be useful to some if we kept a rolling account of our own for when grades have been given. That way we could have a pulse of what 'Date Logged' PSA seems to be on in terms of grades.

I know some are interested on the 'Date Received' vs 'Date Logged', and you could post that if you'd like. I'm more interested in the 'Date Logged (into system)', 'Date Grades Received' and 'Submission Type (Value/Bulk/QGS, Economy, Express, etc).

I'll start with one I gleaned from another discussion:

via @sjjs28:
Submission Type: Bulk (53 Card) Date Logged: 3/11/20 Date Grades Received: 9/7/20

Latest Info by Service Type

CC Voucher: Logged: 7/22/20 Grades Received/Shipped: 10/6/20
Economy: Logged: 6/19/20 Grades Received/Shipped: 7/30/20
Express: Logged: 10/1/20 Grades Received/Shipped: 10/8/20
Regular: Logged 9/3/2020 Grades Received/Shipped: 9/16/2020
QGS: Logged: 6/14/20 Grades Received/Shipped: 9/14/20
Value Modern (Pre-Split): Logged: 6/12/20 Grades Received/Shipped: 9/22/20
Value Ultra Modern: Logged: 6/8/20 Grades Received/Shipped: 9/29/20

    Evening,

One of my Subs! Quarterly Special. Three other subs also languishing in Long Beach even newer! 2 subs sitting in Long Beach, 5 weeks and 6 weeks, no loggage.

91 Cards, 82 same set, 1945 Non Sports, other 9 Cards a 1941 set, 1941 Non Sports set all same, same manufacturer of 82 cards.

Received at PSA Long Beach: 5/28/2020

    Logged in 6/4/2020

    6/10/2020 in R & I Limbo

6/12/2020 Moved from R & I to Assembly with 1-2 days in Grading...Whatever, ( 2 Days to Grade, but 9 Weeks to Sonicaly Seal 91 cards! WTF!)!!!

Assembly: 9 weeks. Then last two weeks of Assembly, Review order Window 2 Weeks until 8/27/2020, no forward motion.

8/28/2020 move to Quality Check #1...........2 weeks+ now, again, no movement!

9/10/2020. The most frustrating parts for me are the Fits and Starts, Then Nothing, so I now have this sitting in Qual Check #1 for what weeks or months now?

    This is just Ludicrous!

My degree is in Business Administration, from an Ivy League College! This is the worst, unequal, maddening Customer Service I have ever seen in doing Business in 40+ years. PERIOD!

Im sure I just screwed myself on my Grades when they Pop in 2021...But WTF...so unbelievable to be just Unreal!

    YeeHah! :#:s:s:(

Nope. I think both grades were accurate, no point in cracking.

The 6 bulk orders received 6/24 I am hoping to have back this year but starting to feel that may be too optimistic :(

Got a real nice surprise with the mahomes. Thought the bonds had a shot at a 10. Was hoping for a 9 on the Mahomes. I got an email from Psa before the grades popped saying I owed an extra 200 dollars because a card graded higher than I expected. Gladly pay an up charge any day. Card isn’t even mine. I get a box of panini prizm (used to get Topps chrome) every year for my nephew for Christmas. It’s a fun rip Christmas morning. The card didn’t even make it into a holder when he first ripped the box. Wasn’t until a few years after he was looking through the box to see if had a mahomes and sure enough he did.

you can tell our brains have been reconditioned when 60 business days grading after 2 month to get entered is "a little faster than normal economy" for a service that used to be entered the next day and was 7 business days LOL

Why are the up-charges rubbing me wrong?? Not trying to start something; but I just don't really agree with that practice. Let's say you have a really nice Mantle and you pay for the submission at the NM-MT price.....that's already decent money. Then it pops a 9 or 10 and you owe a bunch of money. That's not really fair. The card is assessed in it's raw state and an opinion is rendered. No more no less. We are asking them to grade the card not to put a price on it or sell it. Now don't get me wrong, they can up-charge me anytime in a scenario like the Mantle one. But $200 more for the Mahomes card to me seems wrong.

Kind of agree with you a bit on this one. Assuming there's no extra service being rendered (maybe bringing in a more experienced grader?) to give the 8 vs 9 then it's sort of arbitrary. They could in theory inflate a grade to get the upcharge (at risk of course of degrading the 'value' of their grading opinion).

What would you have PSA do when you submit a card at a level that is in violation of its terms? Destroy the card? Return it ungraded? Grade it (fairly) anyway? I'm sure PSA's business model doesn't involve seeing hundreds of 1986 Jordans at the Value level.

They should point out the issue before grading. Then if they want to charge more.......

  • blurryfaceblurryface Posts: 5,136 ✭✭✭✭✭

it should be done properly and submitted at the right service level. there's enough stuff bottlenecking the system already. then you wouldn't be shocked w/ the upcharge or causing extra work and delays. the scenario you're describing sounds more like you getting called out for trying to slip one past the goalie than a mantle hitting a 9/10.

trust me, when my mantles hit 9s, let alone a 10, i'm more worried about not breaking an ankle after doing a triple lindy off the couch vs a couple extra hundred buck up charge.

as stated earlier, up charge me anytime.

That is an, IMO, reasonable option. Would people really prefer their whole sub held up at least a week while customer service tries to find out if the submitter really wants his $110 cards graded from his value submission? I tend to doubt it, but that's just me.

    1948 Leaf Football. It's a "1 of 1 of 1" !
Express service. Logged 9/10, shipped 9/21.
The card is a 1 of 1, and PSA wouldn't grade it with clear evidence they graded others with the same "Factory Mis-Print" That must be the first for that non-grade for a 1948 Leaf Football card. The set is filled with "Variations". Many in the POP report, except mine now.

7 months on top of how long to log in?

    some good results in there!

guessing the rc shield stamping on the 2019 prizm might be what knocked a few of those off the gem board? didn't realize how many of them are mis-stamped until i got a sub back and someone pointed it out to me.

If you submit a $1000 card at an $500 and under economy level and get an upcharge, that makes sense.

If I submit a $90 card at an economy level and the grade assessed makes it a 1k then I have a problem with the upcharge. The grade has increased the value, which is the whole allure of tpgs. For every card that turns into a 1k card, there are fifty that turn into cards that don’t even cover the cost of grading.

I know there is no use complaining, but I still don’t like it.

  • eagles33eagles33 Posts: 2,676 ✭✭✭

At the time I submitted the mahomes it was nowhere near the prices it is today. Raw ones were selling at or below the 500 threshold for the service level I sent it. Again I don’t have an issue with the up charge.

But isn't that exactly what you're looking for? And in reality, most people know there's a chance that $99 card ends up a $1k on the right day. And if you have no problem paying it before, then why is afterwards a problem?

It looks like we both can agree it doesn't happen on an overly frequent basis by the "fifty that don't cover the grading costs". and i truly hope that is tongue in cheek. We all get our duds, but 50?

See this is what I don't understand. If I submit a Gem Mint, say 1988 Jordan, at the value level because a Near Mint one is worth $90, didn't I misrepresent the value of my card rather than PSA change it? I mean are we seriously arguing that a Gem Mint 1988 Jordan is worth $90, but if you put it in PSA plastic it becomes worth $1000? Does PSA change the value, or just help us recognize the value?

Note: I don't know how much a 1988 Jordan goes for in either 7 or 10. It just sounded reasonable based on the above numbers. Please don't get caught up in the example card.

See this is what I don't understand. I think there is no right or wrong answer to this....only opinions. I'm sure back in the day people would buy 52 Topps commons for under $100. It was/is very popular. That's decent money to pay for a common. PSA could grade that a 10 and they could be worth thousands. I believe the buyer was smart and recognized a high grade card. Would PSA grade the card and charge the customer more??? I just don't think the up-charge is appropriate after the grading has been done. PSA does not assign value/they are supposed to assign grades.

I am beginning to understand more of the nuances behind both sides of this conversation.

I have a real life example. I put in a review submission for my cc renewal sub. My Cal Ripken topps rookie was a psa 9 and bumped to a psa 10. I assigned the value of a PSA 9 in my submission. I was hopeful for a bump but I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect it and value it that way. I paid for a service based on defined evidence that a psa 9 was $75. Service was rendered. The resultIng bump then resulted in me paying more. My upcharge on that seemed strange to me.

All in all, yes, I’m fortunate. And now I own a card that I can sell for more money. But what exactly was happening to assigned value after a grade was given confused me as to the rules of engagement. Now I know. As someone else said, there’s no right answer. Just psa policies that we learn and accept if we want to get our cards graded.
