Over the last two weeks, I've managed to acquire several hard-to-find cards of Willie Woodburn. Thanks to @doubledragon, I have been able to secure one of the rarest cards of Woodburn. My response to his thread about rare cards led him to contact an overseas seller regarding the cards I mentioned in my response. The seller had in fact sold one of the cards several years before. Unfortunately, it was the one and only time the seller had sold the card.
Apparently, the seller took it upon himself to contact the buyer in order to inquire if the card was up for sale. At the time (approximately two months ago), the answer was no. In the ensuing two months the answer changed to yes. The seller reached out to me late last week to offer me the opportunity to purchase. I happily obliged.
The shield, shown below, was issued around 1950 by City Bakeries in Glasgow, Scotland. The set features team badges, along with individual player badges for various teams. Woodburn is featured twice in the set. Once representing Rangers and once representing Scotland. And so the hunt continues...

One Godfrey Phillips hand cut, and two Donaldson cards. The Donaldson cards have quite a few variations so I was happy to acquire the cards. The two Donaldson cards are referred to as "Big Heads" and these are the first I've had the opportunity to acquire.
The variation with the blue ink is the first release of the third series, and the variation with the black ink is the second release of the third series. The set was issued over a span of years so arriving at a date is a bit difficult. At a minimum, the cards were issued no earlier than 1947 as Woodburn made his international debut in April of 1947 against England and the card back clearly cites his play against England. More likely the date of the cards is later in the 40s or early in the 50s as Woodburn was part of several Scotland teams that were very successful against their rival to the south in those post-WWII years.
The Godfrey Phillips hand cut likely dates from 1951 and would have been cut from the cigarette pack. Unfortunately, the pin holes down the center of the card are very common. It appears the pinholes don't always go down the center of the card like the two i've acquired so I continue to search for one that has less obtrusive pinholes.
By comparison, here is picture of what is commonly referred to as "Wee Heads":
There may be a resubmission in the future for that one once I'm able to get the "Big Heads" to PSA for grading. Curious to see how they handle the labeling of the variations.

Actually it IS PART OF THE MASTER SET under variations for that card set . I was shocked when I was able to add it right in . There is another card , I believe card #65 of Evans himself . One day I'll get that one maybe .

I'm also a huge fan of Floyd Patterson, and this item was too rare for me to pass up. It is a 1984 Tops Skim Milk carton series that featured different olympic greats on the carton. Of course Floyd Patterson won the gold medal at the 1952 Olympic games, so I just had to have this boxing rarity. I love cards that are featured on food products. I should also note that Floyd Patterson and Joe Louis were good friends.
While I've had this card for probably 20 years, I just got it back slabbed from a group submission....It;s the 1987 Board & Baseball "no slash" variation of the Cal Ripken Jr. card .

I remember going on a family vacation to Florida and buying the set of Boardwalk & Baseball cards. Wasn’t at the B&B park, might have been at the Red Sox spring training park in Winterhaven. Never knew about the no slash variations, but that brings back great memories.
You can't tell by the photo, but there were approx. 10 each of Seaver, Rose, Mays, Yaz, Robinson and all in great shape - including elusive centering for this issue. I only saw 10 or so decals less than EX, and most were EX MT or better.
I'm going to study the low pops to see if there are any submission candidates. For example, there were several Pete Ward decals that looked really good in the lot.

The photo selection by Topps for the 81 Carlton, along with the 75 Seaver and 75 Palmer, has always bothered me. If they were going to go with a close-up candid/portrait/profile shot vs an action/posed shot, I don't know how they could have decided that the best pic to use was one where a shadow covers half their face. These were the stars of the day, future HOFers, not utility players and back of the bullpen guys that nobody cared about. Topps whiffed badly on those.

13 years of this 1955 Parkhurst Jacques Plante rookie in PSA 8 at the top of my wantlist. Arrived today and it's a pretty special feeling. POP 11 with none higher.
Thanks, guys. 1955 Parkhurst has always been my favourite hockey set. In addition to the Plante, last month I put my money where my mouth was and sold some 1988-89 Fleer basketball stars (Jordan, Jordan AS, and Pippen PSA 10's) to get this classic card:
Woah, these come from my hometown. The Swell factory was demolished in 2011, so cool to see that tag on there!
