Watching him struggle with injuries in the second half of his career was almost as painful as watching the awful teams he played on in that era of Yankees baseball.

I kicked off this month with a new early Yankees card addition. I like old cards of important Yankees and this guy was a team and franchise superstar. The Crow made his debut for the Yankees in 1932 and would be a Yankee mainstay for the next 40 years. With a playing career of 17 years as a slick fielding shortstop (who often pulled off the hidden ball trick on many the unsuspecting Major Leaguer) and then another two decades as a part of the coaching staff, you really couldn't face the Yankees and not bump into the light hitting 2 time all star. Here he is 91 years ago - before the Yankees - they when he was picking it for the Seals.

I picked up 2 1979 Topps football cello packs for my collection, one with Payton Record Breaker on top and the other with Roger Staubach on back. The Payton pack also has Ted Hendricks on the back, a double hall of fame pack is pretty cool.

the love affair with these cards continues. last monday i was about 5 minutes away from a conference call when an overwhelming feeling came over me that i should quickly hop on ebay. lo and behold, one of these loch ness monsters had indeed surfaced. dude had a large figure attached, but was accepting offers. i beelined to watchcount and sure enough, lots of pending activity. "YO DO NOT SELL THIS CARD BEFORE WE HAVE A CHANCE TO TALK, I WILL OVERPAY" is all i had time for. i returned an hour or so later and thankfully it was still alive. after hitting the ball back over the net a few times, a deal was soon consummated.

for those who couldn't care less about golf and know even less about Byron Nelson, think Stan Musial. one of the best ever, but undoubtedly the game's greatest gentleman. you can argue with someone til you're blue in the face about Tiger or Jack, but when it comes to the nicest man to ever play the sport, Lord Byron will roll off of tongues more than any other name. in 1945, he won 11 tournaments in a row and 18 total. 6th all time in wins with 5 majors (2 green jackets in '37 and '42) under his belt when he retired at the ripe old age of 34. what could have been.

earlier in this thread i mentioned breaking away to see my parents during this trying time. while there, i started tripping over all sorts of golf goodness. Mr. Nelson had close ties to my alma mater, and circa 1992 my dad (also a grad) had the good fortune of playing a round of golf with him. i felt compelled to take a picture of the picture that documented the experience, and the very next day i bought this card. sometimes this hobby can be extremely uncanny.

(Mr. Nelson in the middle and my old man to the right in glasses sizable enough to aid him when his ball went astray.)

The Detroit Times stamps were issued in either a side-by-side pairing; or, in one case, a full-page "sheet" of 16. The Joe Louis pairing was with Babe Ruth, making it a pretty special one to find with those two together.

Gorgeous and Iconic card. He is also a lawyer, an author and a former member of Parliament here in The North. Hockey might have been simply a hobby for him.

Continuing my nostalgia run on guys I watched as a kid growing up in the 80's and early 90's. I am not sure of the urge to pick these up recently as I have multiple raw copies and sets of all these years, I guess nothing like the draw of picking up PSA slabs that serve as windows to all those great memories of childhood. Looks like I need to clean a few of these slabs and my scanner.
